District SK J.C. Greco Vice Supreme Master SK Marvin Harris FAITHFUL FRIAR S MESSAGE The poor is a theme in the gospel of Saint Luke. shepherds were poor. They were poor because their life style did not allow them to keep the dietary and ritual laws of Jewish society. So, they were outcast. They were a rejected people, who were not given social respect. For Luke, shepherds represent all the poor in spirit. All who are grieving, all who are powerless, all who feel the pain of rejection, anyone in need of a savior. Luke chose shepherds (the poor in spirit) to be first to see the son of god --- Christ the king, born in king david s city of Bethlehem. How profoundly symbolic, that shepherds were the first to see the lamb of God, born to be God s lamb of sacrifice. The shepherds stood in awe of the glory and splendor of heaven shinning around them. Then, with trusting and believing hearts they said, let us go now to see what the Lord has made know to us. Seeing the infant king and savior, they knelt to honored him. Like the simple and humble shepherds may we honor the presence of Christ living in our souls. Let us adore him with humble surrender, and trust today, tomorrow, and for eternity. Rev. Leonard Traverso, Chaplain NAVIGATOR S MESSAGE My Faithful Sir Knights, Connie and I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas! Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you during this wonderful, wondrous family time of the year. This is probably not my smoothest segue, but during our November Business meeting, I challenged all in attendance to convince me I should hold a December Business meeting for the 4 th Degree. I know you find this hard to believe, but not one person offered an argument in favor of a meeting. I offer all of you the

3 same chance. I must warn you, though; I do not have an open mind in this area. I have always thought the Knights should forego any but Family centric meetings during the Christmas Holiday Season. There are too many demands on our time to waste anyone s discretionary time on another meeting. For those of you rushing to your computers to make an argument, I would offer that Monday, December 3 rd is the only date available to the Knights at St. Elizabeth s for a meeting. It would need to be combined and it would be after the Council s combined meetings. Start time around 9:30 PM. Case in point in the area of time requirements is the three requests for our Color Corps in December. The first is a Procession celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Alviso, on the 8 th of December. It is followed by two Simbang Gabi Masses in which Bishop McGrath will participate. One will be at St. Elizabeth s, Milpitas, on December 6 th and the other at St. John the Baptist, Milpitas, on December 9 th. We are trying to get maximum Color participation for each requested Simbang Gabi Mass both to support our Bishop and our Filipino Community. (Positions are still available for both the 6 th and the 9 th. The St. Elizabeth s Mass is not for the faint of heart. The report time is 5:30 AM!) Sandwiched between our Color Corps callouts is the annual combined St. Elizabeth s Council/St. Joseph s Assembly Christmas party. The date and time are Monday, December 0 th at 7:00 PM. Remember, it is a potluck. Bring your favorite dish; be it salad, entre, or dessert to share with others. I have never attended a Catholic potluck where I went home hungry. You won t either. We always have a good time. Priests reading this article should regard it as a Formal and Specific invitation to come to our potluck. The grace of your attendance and your appetite is all that is required. Council #8747 usually invites its choirs and, with a little bit of encouragement, they will (sometimes) even lead the Christmas Carols. There is also an opportunity to donate an unwrapped Christmas gift for a child. I cannot say for certain these gifts stay within the Parish, but I am certain they are given to needy children within the community of Santa Clara County. I m sure SK Julio Galvan could advise you if there is a certain target age he has identified as especially needed this year. He would also appreciate nonperishable food donations to be distributed during the Christmas Holidays. Lastly, I would remind all Council Officers that February 2 nd, our next 4 th Degree Exemplification in Rohnert Park, is just around the corner. There are several dates included within the packet provided by the District Master through the District Secretary and our own Comptroller that occur in early January. There has also been a request for any who intend to reserve a Hotel Room at the Doubletree to get your reservations in early. (Our District Master has to guarantee a certain number of reservations and attendees at the Exemplification based on projections. He should not be left hanging by our waiting until mid -January to turn in From 4s and a check to our Comptroller SK Ed Blake.) That is not to say that if you have a last minute decision by a qualified 3 rd Degree member that we will not make a strong request to our District Master. If you need help to close the deal with candidates, please give them both mine and SK Ed Blake s contact information. Again, have a very Merry Christmas. The month of November gives our Assembly the opportunity to demonstrate what the Fourth Degree is all about, Patriotism. On Sunday, November th, nine (9) Sir Knights from our Assembly were present to do the honors of the flag raising ceremony for the City of Milpitas Pictured from L to R, SKs Ed Blake, Color Corps Commander, Skip Yenchik, Faithful Navigator, Tim Crews, District Deputy #29, Ruben Esguerra, Greg Dessel, Guillermo Uribe, David Marshall, Ed Kantack, and Leonardo Garcia-Araiza Other than the Veterans Day event, that was pretty much all that occurred. However, our December is proving to be a busy one and I m not even including Christmas.
