2 IMPORTANT CALENDAR EVENTS SEE THE ENCLOSED CALENDAR - POST IT AND SHARE IT! FROM THE CHAPLAIN S DESK Our Journey of Lent After two months of Roman sojourn, I am truly grateful that I have more time To see and ponder carefully the beauty of Arts, Culture, and Church History through the magnificent basilicas, churches, sanctuaries, reliquaries and images within the grandeur of Rome, the eternal city. Now I understand fully the wisdom that priests come to this place not just to witness the universality of the Church but in this place we find the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul, both pillars of the Catholic Church. While being overwhelmed by the beauty of the sacred, there is one image here in Rome that I find it insignificant to many: the statue of a poor man right in front of the Ospidale di Santo Spirito in Sassia ( Holy Spirit Hospital in Sassia, Rome) and is behind a Fermata ( a bus stop). It is an ugly monument of a man lying on his back, his body is covered with blanket while his hand covers his head. This image is not just about a medical condition within the premise of a Hospital but a simple structure that signifies the misery of a person hiding in shame and burden. It is an image of a suffering Christ. It is paralleled to the cross that is veiled with a cloth during lent to be unveiled on Good Friday. We have 40 days of lent to journey with Jesus who went on hiding himself from the rejection of furious human beings which marks the real beginning of his passion. We journey with Christ who took on the burden of our sins in misery and shame. During Lent that will end with the unveiling of the Cross that shows the liberating power of the sufferings of Christ, may we uncover obstacles which keeps us from living our faith to the fullest. A Blessed Lent! Rev. Joseph A. Page, Chaplain 2 GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE My Brother Knights I just want to say welcome to the month of March and also welcome to our brothers who completed Formation (Second) Degree last month. Your Grand Knight,, Guillermo Uribe Please pray for: The Soul of Brother Ludwig Indihar The Soul of Brother Timothy Reilly, PGK The Soul of Brother Theodore H. Nguyen Brother Bill Poehlman Brother Rev. Leonard Traverso Brother Bobby Baliza Brother Lam Nguyen Brother Richard Lai Brother Lyle Ambler Brother Todd Ferrand And all those listed in the Church Prayer List. PROGRAM DIRECTOR MESSAGE Dear Brother Knights, Two booklets in the KofC Catholic Information Service are especially informative during this season of Lent. The booklet Penance (#115) of the Luke E. Hart Series will assist you in overcoming your fears and misconceptions during your required Sacrament of confession preparations. Then the booklet Way of the Cross (#363) of the Veritas Series provides both traditional and modern meditations for your use in Way of the Cross sessions. These and other information booklets can be located and downloaded at cis/index.html. I want to remind our Brothers that Holy Week for this Lenten season begins on Palm Sunday March 25. Continue your acts of Charity during the year and I wish you and your family a Happy Easter on April 1. Please continue reflecting upon the information in the pamphlet released by Supreme entitled The Family Fully Alive, Building the Domestic Church. The term domestic church describes the identity and mission of a Christian family. Its roots are scriptural. Please visit the K of C initiative site at kofc.org/un/en/domestic-church/index.html and under the Family Fully Alive Program section in the center, download the Program PDF. This booklet explains the Family Fully Alive Program and is a wealth of instructions and prayers. Scripture Reading Psalm 34:5-11 A prayer for those who suffer to trust the Lord. I sought the LORD, and he answered me, delivered me from all my fears. Look to him and be radiant, and your faces may not blush for shame.

3 This poor one cried out and the LORD heard, and from all his distress he saved him. The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he saves them. Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the stalwart one who takes refuge in him. Fear the LORD, you his holy ones; nothing is lacking to those who fear him. The rich grow poor and go hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. Don t forget anytime is a perfect time for you to introduce us to a Catholic neighbor in Church or in the Parish Community that you have thought would make a good member of the Knights of Columbus. Unless YOU are willing to ask him, if he would like to become a member of the Knights of Columbus, he CANNOT join us. All you need to do is get the prospect s name and number to me. Then we will schedule the Admissions Committee with you to visit him and his family. Andy Dyson, Membership Director VOCATION PRAYER HOLY SPIRIT, YOU PREPARED JESUS FOR THE SCANDAL OF THE CROSS BY LEADING HIM INTO THE DESERT. MAY OUR LENTEN JOURNEY ENABLE US TO DRAW CLOSER TO GOD AND OTHERS. HELP US TO BE DISCIPLES TO A WORLD IN NEED OF REDEMPTION. MAY THOSE CALLED TO PRIESTHOOD AND THE CONSECRATED LIFE RESPOND WITH COURAGE, STRENGTH, AND GENEROSITY. AMEN CULTURE OF LIFE In the Interest of the Child by Richard Doerflinger July 27, 2007 One success story in government efforts for better health care is SCHIP (the State Children s Health Insurance Program). Since 1997 this federal program has helped states provide coverage for millions of children who fall between the cracks of the health care system children, for example, whose families are not lowincome enough for Medicaid but can t 3

4 afford decent private health insurance. SCHIP s pending reauthorization by Congress offers an opportunity to reflect on what we want most for children in our society. Federal support for abortion in the program is prohibited except for the rare hard cases of danger to the mother s life or rape/incest, reflecting the policy that governs federal Medicaid funds. States may implement SCHIP by extending coverage under Medicaid, by setting up a distinct state children s health program, or by a combination of both. The distinct state program has the advantage of allowing a state to tailor its services to children s special health needs, while excluding controversial and morally problematic procedures like abortion and sterilization for minors (as Michigan and Pennsylvania have done). In 2002 the Bush administration improved the program further, by clarifying the word child in the legislation to include the unborn child. This allows states to use state and federal funds for prenatal care and other basic needs of these children and their mothers. Providing coverage in the name of the unborn child, of course, recognizes simple reality every obstetrician knows that when he provides care to a pregnant woman, he has two patients. But it also has two practical benefits. First, it does not have the effect of expanding abortions, since no sane person can claim to be aborting a child to promote his or her health. Second, care can be provided to needy mothers and children whatever the immigrant status of the mother. The unborn child is not deemed to be an immigrant (legal or otherwise), and when born will be a U.S. citizen a much healthier citizen, if the mother receives good prenatal care. This is a beautifully elegant way to provide lifeaffirming care to both women and children, and is already being implemented in 11 states. Therefore, of course, pro-abortion groups hate it. In recent years they have tried but failed to supplant the unborn child rule with legislation authorizing coverage in the name of the pregnant woman alone because they oppose any recognition of unborn children as children, and because they want to make it easy for pregnant women to get elective abortions in the 17 states that use their own funds for such abortions in Medicaid. In short, the adult pregnant woman is treated as a child to make it easier to kill the real child, in a program to promote children s health. Now a new Congress with less pro-life support is about to reauthorize this ten-year-old program, and these ideologues will try to get their way. But pro-life members of Congress will work to codify the unborn child rule, to keep this program focused on life-affirming care for vulnerable children and their mothers in need. Congress should reauthorize SCHIP -- and should try to get it right, in the interest of the child. Mr. Doerflinger is Deputy Director of the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. For more information on Culture of Life visit our Supreme Website at Vinh T. Before you make that assumption, do some basic research and apply for coverage through the Knights of Columbus. The Order s Income Armor product gives you options that can help you fit this critical protection into your risk management budget. Here are two ways you can reduce your premium: 1. Choose a two-year or five-year maximum benefit period. Depending on your age, the best option is probably a policy that pays benefits until you reach age 67. But a two-year or five-year duration benefit period would cover disabilities you might encounter in your working life. 2. Choose a longer elimination period. An elimination period is the number of days a total disability must exist before benefits begin to accrue. Typical elimination periods are 30, 90, or 180 days. Choosing a longer elimination period lowers the policy s premium. But be sure you have enough set aside in your contingency fund to account for the longer gap. As your professional insurance agent, risk management is my specialty. Let s talk about how to protect your income, your retirement needs, and your family s financial future.
