2 IMPORTANT CALENDAR EVENTS SEE THE ENCLOSED CALENDAR - POST IT AND SHARE IT! FROM THE CHAPLAIN S DESK Let Your Light Shine The Epiphany reveals that the Christ, the Jewish Messiah, had come not only for the Jews but for the whole world. This story of the Magi was an early signal that the Church of Christ would be universal. This is the feast of outsiders, of peoples of all races and colors. It is a feast to help us realize that God intended variety. The variety of races and colors on our earth is for enrichment and enjoyment and not a reason for hatred and division. Racism is the greatest kind of perversion, an insult to the creator who made us. Let your light shine, said Jesus. Maybe this is the feasts that asks us to guide others, possibly an outsider, to a meeting place with Christ. Blessings of New Year! Rev. Joseph A. Page, Chaplain GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE My Brother Knights I would like to say thank you for our successful 2017 year and looking forward to our upcoming 2018 year. We had such a great year in recruiting and new insurance members, we made Star Council. Your Grand Knight,, Guillermo Uribe Please pray for: The Soul of Brother Ludwig Indihar The Soul of Brother Timothy Reilly, PGK The Soul of Brother Theodore H. Nguyen Brother Bill Poehlman Brother Rev. Leonard Traverso Brother Bobby Baliza 2 Brother Lam Nguyen Brother Richard Lai Brother Lyle Ambler Brother Todd Ferrand And all those listed in the Church Prayer List. PROGRAM DIRECTOR MESSAGE Dear Brother Knights, I would like to take a few minutes to wish each of our Brothers and their family members a Very Happy New Year and remind everyone that we are still celebrating the Church s Christmas Season. The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord; January 8. During this season, we celebrate the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts, and reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with him including the fact that he was born to die for us. I would also like to extend my invitation to each of our Brother Knights and their family members to continue reflecting upon the information in the pamphlet released by Supreme entitled The Family Fully Alive, Building the Domestic Church. The term domestic church describes the identity and mission of a Christian family. Its roots are scriptural. Please visit the K of C initiative site at and under the Family Fully Alive Program section in the center, download the Program PDF. This booklet explains the Family Fully Alive Program and is a wealth of instructions and prayers. Scripture Reading Psalm 65:6-14 A prayer of gratitude for God s blessings. You answer us with awesome deeds of justice, O God our savior, The hope of all the ends of the earth and of those far off across the sea. You are robed in power, you set up the mountains by your might. You still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples. Distant peoples stand in awe of your marvels; the places of morning and evening you make resound with joy. You visit the earth and water it, make it abundantly fertile. God s stream is filled with water; you supply their grain. Thus do you prepare it: you drench its plowed furrows, and level its ridges. With showers you keep it soft, blessing its young

3 sprouts. You adorn the year with your bounty; your paths drip with fruitful rain. The meadows of the wilderness also drip; the hills are robed with joy. The pastures are clothed with flocks, the valleys blanketed with grain; they cheer and sing for joy. We will be conducting a Recruitment Drive January 13 and 14. We will also have an Information Night on January 17 at 7:00 PM in the St. Christopher Room. This would be a perfect time for you to introduce us to a Catholic neighbor in Church or in the Parish Community that you have thought would make a good member of the Knights of Columbus. Unless YOU are willing to ask him, if he would like to become a member of the Knights of Columbus, he CANNOT join us. All you need to do is get the prospect s name and number to me. Then we will schedule the Admissions Committee with you to visit him and his family. 4 CULTURE OF LIFE The Death of Pro-Choice By Richard Doerflinger January 17, 2014 Ever since Congress first approved the Hyde amendment in 1976, a nation divided on abortion has generally been able to agree on at least one thing: The government should not force Americans to fund or promote abortion against their will. Such coercion would violate both life and choice, the paramount values on both sides of this dispute. So for 37 years, Congress has approved (and, in many cases, annually reaffirmed) numerous provisions to prevent federal funding of abortion and abortion coverage in all but the rarest circumstances. At a recent subcommittee hearing in Congress, a bill to establish this policy more firmly and consistently in federal law drew hostile reactions that suggest this truce is over. The legislation is the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (HR 7, S. 946). It would apply the policy of the Hyde amendment across all government programs, including the new Affordable Care Act (ACA), whose implementation has produced serious evasions and violations of that policy. The Hyde policy has long enjoyed broad support among Americans, including American women. In one poll taken during Congress s consideration of the ACA, most respondents opposed measures to make Americans pay for abortion coverage with their taxes or health premiums, and over two-thirds opposed abortion in their own health coverage and on each question, women were more opposed than men. So one might think a law reflecting that consensus should sail through Congress. Instead, HR 7 was the subject of loud protests and gross misrepresentations. Supporters of taxfunded abortion in the District of Columbia held a press conference to condemn the hearing, and protested outside the hearing room when the bill was approved because it simply continues the current ban on publicly funded abortions in DC. Protesters shouted Where are the women? to protest the subcommittee s all-male membership although one of two pro-life witnesses, Helen Alvare, is a female law professor, and all subcommittee members opposing the bill were male. A witness against HR 7, Susan Wood of George Washington University, called it a mean-spirited attempt to interfere and meddle in women s lives. She and other opponents were simply not interested in the difference between prohibiting something and declining to pay for it. An abortion movement that once trumpeted privacy the right to be let alone to make one s own choices now wants to inject abortion into all our lives as a public good demanding our support. But it is the height of hypocrisy to cry Let me alone! as you pick your neighbor s pocket. Abraham Lincoln faced a similar problem, as he tried without success to avoid civil war by compromising with those supporting slavery. The slave states rejected his offer to prevent slavery s expansion, while leaving it alone where it was legal. He asked: What would satisfy his opponents? This, and this only: cease to call slavery wrong, and join them in calling it right. And this must be done thoroughly done in acts as well as in words. Silence will not be tolerated we must place ourselves avowedly with them. Holding, as they do, that slavery is morally right, and socially elevating, they cannot cease to demand a full national recognition of it, as a legal right, and a social blessing. Substitute abortion for slavery and you have a sketch of today s abortion rights agenda. Countering that agenda won t take a civil war just pro-life citizens who inform themselves on the issue, and make their voices heard in Congress. Frank De Smidt, Community Director FIELD AGENTS REPORT Insurance Check-Up for 2018 Where did 2017 go? It seems like it was summer yesterday and Easter was last week. I hope you and your family had a great finish to Now, the first quarter of 2018 will be flying by. Hopefully, you ve established a few goals for this year. I ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. It s not too late if you haven t already done this. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. It may not make sense at first, but I m sure you have heard stories of the success this simple task can bring. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down. Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I would love to be the first you sit with. Let s schedule some time to meet together, and I, your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, will provide an insurance check-up (at no cost!) that will evaluate any gaps in your family s life insurance protection. Now might be the perfect time to fill those gaps, not later. Keep in mind that unlike many other products, you don t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change. Did I mention my check-up is free of charge? When was the last time you received something for free that could provide value to you and your family for generations? Call me today. Contact me today to learn more about our products.
