Released on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the environment, the statement draws upon the consistent teaching on environmental issues shared by leaders of the Catholic Church from Blessed Pope Paul VI to St. John Paul II to Pope Francis. The Bishops highlight in their statement that Washington voters will consider Initiative 1631, the carbon emissions fee measure titled the Clean Air Clean Energy Initiative, in the upcoming election. They offer the following points for all to consider before voting: All efforts to reduce the impact of climate change should respect human life and dignity, especially that of the poorest and most vulnerable among us. In accord with their human dignity, local communities especially low-income residents whose voice is often not heard should have a voice in shaping the efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Workers should be supported in dealing with negative effects resulting from a shift away from fossil fuels by receiving assistance to mitigate impacts on their livelihoods and families. These principles offer a framework for voters to consider with all environmental policies. We are called both to care for the environment, and to be thoughtful about how proposed public policies will impact those living in poverty, stated the Bishops. Additionally, the Bishops encourage each person to be personally accountable and seek effective ways in their personal lives, and in businesses and industries, to promote the common good and to care for God s creation. The Catholic Bishops of Washington State are Archbishop J. Peter Sartain and Auxiliary Bishops Eusebio Elizondo and Daniel Mueggenborg of Seattle, Bishop Thomas Daly of Spokane, and Bishop Joseph Tyson of Yakima. The full statement is available at WACatholics.org. The WSCC is the public policy voice of the Catholic Bishops of Washington -Fr. Please contact Tracey Rockwell in the parish office or trockwell@stvincentparish.org On Monday, September 24 th, forty-three parishioners completed a three hour training program called Protecting God s Children. This safe environment training helps adults keep children safe from sexual predators. It does this by teaching how to create a safe environment and to identify the warning signs of a sexual predator. One out of every five adult women and one out of every 10 adult men say they were molested as children. This means that there are an estimated 40 million adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse in the United States alone. It is time to put a stop to this crime and protect all our children! To effectively prevent child sexual abuse, adults must first learn important facts about abuse and abusers. The parish has trained 414 parishioners of which 228 have kept their training status current with online training courses every three years. You can register for training at October 14, 2018 Page 2

The request must be made by an immediate relative or the sick person themselves. To request a Mass intention at a weekday Mass call the parish office. We have been exploring stewardship and sacrificial giving in the past weeks. We ve talked about ordinary income and Sunday contributions. Today we ll explore more about extraordinary giving. You should have received your letter from Archbishop Sartain regarding the Called to Serve as Christ campaign. This capital campaign is extraordinary giving, established to accomplish extraordinary goals. One question many people ask is How did the Archdiocese decide what amount to ask each person/ family to give? Ask amounts were set by looking at a number of factors, including Sunday offertory giving history, Annual Appeal giving history, contributions to the Crozier Society, planning study responses, and public knowledge of philanthropic giving. The Archdiocese has no way of knowing what a family s personal financial situation, income or obligations are, and the amount of a pledge is a personal decision. We will have volunteers available after all Masses this weekend to answer questions you may have regarding the campaign. -Tracey Rockwell October 14, 2018 Page 3

We are going to offer it again in March. Thank you to everyone who is taking the class right now. It is a joy to get to know you and your Strengths. While on the staff retreat our director had us spend time remembering when we felt and experienced the love of God. It was a really powerful experience for me. At Mothers and Others we watched Fr. Dave Pavoka talk about God s love and how sometimes we forget how loved we are. After watching the movie we spent some time remembering how God loves us. This is a truly powerful experience. I would encourage you to spend some time this week remembering how much God loves you. Thanksgiving is coming early for the Vincentians. Our next event is November 6 at noon and we will be having Thanksgiving dinner. The Church will provide the turkey and ham. A-M please bring a side dish and N -Z please bring a dessert.
