Her mother was a Christian Algonquin, taken captive by the Iroquois and given as wife to the chief of the Mohawk clan. When she was four, Tekakwitha lost her parents and little brother in a smallpox epidemic that left her disfigured and half blind. She was adopted by an uncle, who succeeded her father as chief. He hated the coming of the Blackrobes Jesuit missionaries but could do nothing to them because a peace treaty with the French required their presence in villages with Christian captives. She was moved by the words of three Blackrobes who lodged with her uncle, but fear of him kept her from seeking instruction. Tekakwitha refused to marry, and at age 19 finally got the courage to take the step of converting. She was baptized with the name Kateri Catherine on Easter Sunday. Now she would be treated as a slave. Because she would not work on Sunday, Kateri received no food that day. Her life in grace grew rapidly. She told a missionary that she often meditated on the great dignity of being baptized. She was powerfully moved by God s love for human beings and saw the dignity of each of her people. She was always in danger, for her conversion and holy life created great opposition. On the advice of a priest, Kateri stole away one night and began a 200-mile walking journey to a Christian Indian village at Sault St. Louis, near Montreal. For three years she grew in holiness under the direction of a priest and an older Iroquois woman, giving herself totally to God in long hours of prayer, in charity, and in strenuous penance. At 23, Kateri took a vow of virginity, an unprecedented act for an Indian woman whose future depended on being married. She found a place in the woods where she could pray an hour a day and was accused of meeting a man there! Her dedication to virginity was instinctive: Kateri did not know about religious life for women until she visited Montreal. Inspired by this, she and two friends wanted to start a community, but the local priest dissuaded her. She humbly accepted an ordinary life. She practiced fasting as penance for the conversion of her nation. Kateri Tekakwitha died the afternoon before Holy Thursday. Witnesses said that her emaciated face changed color and became like that of a healthy child. The lines of suffering, even the pockmarks, disappeared and the touch of a smile came upon her lips. St. Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 21, She is the patroness of ecology and the environment, people in exile and Native Americans. Taken form Thank you to the Lezcano family for donating this icon. -Fr. Bill M E S S A G E F R O M Y O U R P A S T O R October 07, 2018 Page 1

To purchase tickets please contact the Parish Office at One out of every five adult women and one out of every 10 adult men say they were molested as children. This means that there are an estimated 40 million adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse in the United States alone. It is time to put a stop to this crime and protect all our children! To effectively prevent child sexual abuse, adults must first learn important facts about abuse and abusers. The parish has trained 414 parishioners of which 228 have kept their training status current with online training courses every three years. You can register for training at October 07, 2018 Page 2

The request must be made by an immediate relative or the sick person themselves. To request a Mass intention at a weekday Mass call the parish office. In our continuing discussion of stewardship and ordinary income, you may be asking, How are my donations used by the parish? Our Sunday collections cover basic expenses that are incurred in running the parish lights, heat, garbage disposal, security monitoring, janitorial, maintenance of all buildings and grounds; as well as providing faith formation for all age groups, subsidizing our parish school and providing care and support of our parish community. Our staff members are grateful to be of service, and are diligent about being good stewards of how our funds are spent on different ministries. Each year our expenses go up, while our Sunday collections have remained flat. With a healthy economy, we rely on our parishioners to keep pace with the cost of running the parish through their Sunday contributions. If it s been a few years since you have increased your Sunday contribution, and you are in a position to do so, please consider upping your pledge when we conduct our parish Stewardship Drive this November. -Tracey Rockwell October 07, 2018 Page 3

7 First grade students shared information about themselves! Buy your gift cards from the school! First and Third Weekends of the Month after the 9 am Mass. Next Sale Date: October 21, 2018 How does this school fundraiser work? You buy a gift card from the school for a store, company, or restaurant. You get dollar for dollar value for the card. For example, you buy a $25 Amazon gift card from the school and you have a $25 Amazon gift card to use. The company gives the school a percentage of the purchase price of the card. Easy! We call it gift money for the school! All you do is purchase the card from the school instead of a store and the school receives a gift of money. Thanks for supporting our parish school!
