2 Who are we? Mission Inspired by the Holy Spirit and empowered by the Sacraments, our diverse community worships, serves and grows in the love and knowledge of Jesus. Vision We are a growing Catholic community united and passionate in deepening and sharing our relationship with Jesus Christ through justice, love, and compassion. Parish Staff Parish Office Hours: 9 AM TO 3:30 PM Parish Office Fax After Hours Emergency phone: 1 (855) Priests: Fr. William A. McKee, Pastor, x207 Fr. One of many ways we measure growth is by church attendance. Every October we count every individual participating in Mass (as well as the children in the nursery). Last year, when we changed our Mass schedule due to the loss our second priest position, we declined in Mass attendance by 6% (111 individuals). This year we grew 11.6% or an increase of 201 people participating in the Eucharist. Even adjusting for the spectacular attendance at our multi cultural celebration we still passed the 2016 level of Mass attendance. This year s news is good. However, looking over the last ten years, we are in line with the general national trend, having decrease 3.7 percent. We still have work to do. How can you help? First is by fostering a sense of hospitality and a spirit of welcoming in our parish. I recently got a letter from a registered parishioner telling us to take them off the parish list. It wasn t because of the abuse scandal; it wasn t because of bad homilies, or music they did not like (the usual suspects). It was because they felt poorly treated by a group of parishioners. Let s all guard against the current malicious level of civil discourse from entering our parish community. Let s heed St. Paul, who told the Ephesians: No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear (Eph 4:29). Second, help make the liturgy what it truly should be; a reverent celebration of joy. By your participation others should get the sense that what we are doing is important. That includes singing (or at least following the words in the hymnal and moving your lips). It means arriving before Mass begins and not leaving till it is over. It means letting the Word of God touch your heart and the prayers reflect your own prayerful spirit. Third, invite someone go to Mass with you: a family member, new neighbor, a friend or acquaintance. Bribe them with a meal afterwards. (I m running out of room so you will need to add to this list on your own.) Over and over again I hear from new parishioners who have been searching for a faith community that they chose St. Vincent s because they experience a warmth and a welcome here that they did not experience elsewhere. That comes from you. Faith should be infectious and you are making that so here at St. Vincent s. Thank you. You are helping us become a growing Catholic Community, united and passionate in deepening and sharing our relationship with Jesus Christ through justice love and compassion. -Fr. Bill M E S S A G E F R O M Y O U R P A S T O R

3 With election season upon us and the responsibility we all share to participate in the democratic process, now is an important time to learn more about the Catholic Church s position on key matters of public policy. An excellent way to do so is to connect with the Washington State Catholic Conference (the WSCC). The Conference is the public policy voice for all the bishops in the Archdiocese of Seattle and the Dioceses of Spokane and Yakima. Please consider joining the Washington Catholic Advocacy Network, which is easy to do by visiting Mass Count Mass Times Sunday 5:00 pm Vigil (Sat) 9:00 am 11:00 am 5:00 pm (LifeTeen) Weekday in the Holy Family Chapel Mon and Fri 9:00 am Tues and Thurs 6:00 pm Weds 12:10 pm First Sat of the month 9:00 am with anointing of the sick Reconciliation Tues 6:45 pm Fri 2:30 pm First Sat of the month 10:00 am or by appointment At the October Pastoral Council meeting, Finance Council members gave an update on progress of the Called to Serve as Christ Campaign. Pastoral Council members reviewed the Parish Annual Report. Parish Mission, Vision, and Values were reviewed as well as ways to ensure these are fully incorporated into the planning and day to day work of Parish Councils, Staff, Commissions, and committees. This discussion will be ongoing. The current financial challenge of decreasing contributions within our growing Parish was discussed and will be an ongoing topic of discussion this year. We often hear the word tithing with regard to our Sunday giving. Some think of tithing as a protestant concept. You may be surprised to learn that many Catholic Churches have become tithing parishes. What does that mean? The word tithe means tenth. A tithe is the first tenth of a wage earner s income. Tithing is giving back to God something that God gave us in the first place. It is mentioned more than 40 times in Scripture. Numerous Old Testament stories recount how God asked that the first ten percent of the land s produce be set aside as a sign of gratitude for His goodness. Although the early church had no tithing system, the difficulty of raising funds for the growing needs of the Church has led to a modified and voluntary system of tithing. Next week we ll answer the question - How does it work? -Tracey Rockwell November 04, 2018 Page

When I am living in the basement of my activation strengths I don t think before I speak, I can be a lose cannon and starting fires everywhere. This week I want to encourage everyone to spend some time thinking and praying with their strengths. Are we living in the balcony or the basement.
