I would like to review with you the procedures that are in place to assure you that the program is safe and effective. Reach Out is a program of Catholic Community Services of Western Washington (CCSWW) that partners with local churches, organizations, businesses and community volunteers to offer homeless men and women safety, stability and supportive connections through shelter, food, and case management to help them overcome their current circumstances. We are one of several Federal Way churches that open their facilities from the beginning of October through the end of March. All guests are prescreened by Catholic Community Services. No one may just walk in off the street. The pre screening, which is done at a different site, assures there is no history of violence or mental health issues that would be a risk factor. No one intoxicated or high is allowed in the building or on campus. Guests arrive at 9:00 PM and are given a hot meal provided by groups of parishioners from both St. Vincent s and St. Theresa s. In the morning, they are given a continental breakfast and a sack lunch. The supervisor is also responsible to see that the men are off campus by the time students arrive for school. This year we will assist the supervisor with a security officer. A Catholic Community Services Staff member supervises the guests the entire night and ensures the facilities are clean when they leave. Each morning the facilities are rechecked by our own staff to ensure everything was cleaned to our satisfaction since the hall is used for school lunches. In the evenings there is also a CCS social worker who assists the guests to help them overcome their homelessness. The Reach Out program address both the immediate need for food and shelter as well as the long term need of overcoming the obstacles that led to homelessness. On occasion I have had the opportunity to share a meal with our guests. What has always struck me is their gratitude for the hospitality we offer, their respect for our facilities, and their care for one another. Each has their own story and their own struggles. I hope that the care and compassion they experience through our community will aid them on the path to recovery and be for us an opportunity to follow the Lord s command to care for the least of our brothers and sister which is actually to care for Him. -Fr. 3 Why are we making changes to the priest pension plan funding model? Over the years the Archdiocese has taken many steps to improve the funded status of the priest pension plans: Increased the amount from the Annual Catholic Appeal to the plans to $1.6 million per year Increased billings to the parish contribution of the plan $600 per year since 2008 Raised the benefit eligibility age from 65 to 70 Full benefit vesting age increased from 25 to 30 years, depending on date of birth Eliminated three percent extended service benefit Despite these efforts, it was not enough to provide a sustainable path for the future. Based on independent actuarial studies, we know if we continue the pay-as-you-go approach, amounts billed to our parishes will continue to increase for the foreseeable future. A much better approach is to properly fund the plans with adequate capital so present and future generations of priests will have a secure retirement plan and the burden on our parishes will be reduced. Thanksgiving Baskets The St. Vincent de Paul Society thanks the parishioners for your support of our annual Thanksgiving Basket Program. On Sunday, November 18, we packed and delivered 75 baskets to those in need in our community. Thank you to the approximately 100 parishioners and children, and members of the Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul Society, who helped pack and deliver these baskets. Thanks also to the St. Vincent de Paul School for the food donations. We could not have helped those in need for Thanksgiving without the support and generosity of all involved. May our Lord continue to bless you. We will assemble and deliver Christmas Baskets to 100 families Sunday, December 16. In each of these cases, the alleged abuse occurred between 30 and 60 years ago. The Archdiocese has attempted to arrive at fair and just settlements to assist victims with healing and to achieve some measure of closure. The members of the clergy involved in all of these cases are either deceased or have been permanently removed from ministry. All of their names appear among those on the archdiocesan public disclosure list published in The Archdiocese of Seattle urges anyone who suspects abuse by any Church personnel to contact local law enforcement. In addition, anyone who has knowledge of sexual abuse or misconduct by a member of the clergy, an employee or volunteer of the Archdiocese of Seattle is urged to call the archdiocesan hotline at November 25, 2018 Page 2

And quiet intervals, books that are your food and your hunger, nightfall and walks before sleep. Praising these for practice, perhaps you will come at last to praise grief and the wrongs you never intended. At the end there may be no answers and only a few simple questions: did I love, finish my task in the world? Learn at least one of the many names of God? At the intersections, the boundaries where one life begins and another ended, the jumping-off places between fear and possibility, at the ragged edges of pain, did I catch the smallest glimpse of the holy? 9 Mothers and Others For all caregivers of children who would like to be enriched socially, spiritually, and engaged in service with fellow parishioners. We meet in the Willenborg Living Room every Thursday at 9:30. Nursery is available. November 29 ~ Fr. Bill will be with us and he will answer your question about Catholicism. December 6 ~ Celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas December 13 ~ Christmas brunch with ornament exchange Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do but how much love we put in that action. Mother Teresa Join us on December 4 as we go to dinner and drive through the Fantasy of Lights at Spanaway park. The evening will start with dinner in Spanaway and end with the lights. The best part is that we are going to take a bus. The bus only seats 18 people so register early. The cost is $12 for the bus and whatever your dinner costs. We will leave the Church between 3:30 and 4pm, and we will be back around 8:30pm. Please register at the information desk or at the Parish Office. Advent Corner Advent is my most favorite Liturgical Season of the year. It is my favorite time of year because the time of Advent invites us to slow down, and enter into the quite and stillness of waiting in joyful anticipation of the birth of Jesus. The quite and stillness does not come easily or naturally the four weeks before Christmas. Every time that I have been intentional in celebrating Advent I experience a peace and joy that can only be found in the grace of advent. Starting today and through out advent I will be sharing ways to fully enter into advent. Lay Ministry Advent Corner Continued Entering into Advent Unplug and plan intentional times of silence. For me that means turning of the radio in the car and praying. Praying the rosary, listening to scripture are great ways to do this. You can also pray that traditional advent novena. It begins November 30, ends on Christmas Eve and is said 15 times a day. Advent Novena Hail and blessed be the hour and moment In which the Son of God was born Of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, [hear mention your request] through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His Blessed Mother. Amen. 10 OTHER NEWS Giving Tree is on its way! Our Giving Tree arrives on Thanksgiving Day. You can help make the holidays happier for a local child in need by taking a dove from the tree and purchasing a gift for a younger child or a gift card for a teenager. Consider buying gift cards from our parish school. (No clothing, please, except for scarves, gloves and hats.) Please return items under the tree or to the parish office by 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13. Then help us distribute gifts and food baskets on Sunday, Dec. 18. Thank you for your generosity! Stop the Bleed, Save A Life Stop the Bleed is a program providing basic training to civilian bystanders and first responders the skills and basic tools to stop uncontrolled bleeding in an emergency situation. This training can save lives, and is being widely implemented across the country. We are bringing Kate Osborn, a RN at Tacoma General and a certified STB trainer to St. Vincent s for an evening of training. REACH OUT ACTIVITY FEED THE HOMELESS St. Vincent de Paul Parish will again be providing hot meals and a warm place to sleep for homeless men. Beginning December 3rd through December 31st St. Vincent s and St. Theresa s will be joining together to help provide for these men.
