2 Who are we? Mission Inspired by the Holy Spirit and empowered by the Sacraments, our diverse community worships, serves and grows in the love and knowledge of Jesus. Vision We are a growing Catholic community united and passionate in deepening and sharing our relationship with Jesus Christ through justice, love, and compassion. Parish Staff Parish Office Hours: 9 AM TO 3:30 PM Parish Office Fax After Hours Emergency phone: 1 (855) Priests: Fr. William A. McKee, Pastor, x207 Fr. Kim Bowman x202 Shirley Hemmer x203 Receptionist Shirley Hemmer x201 Jennifer Tankiewicz x201 Parish School: Wanda Stewart Principal x236 Latecomers Latecomers or those who leave during the performance will not be seated once the music begins. This sentence appears in the program for the Seattle Opera. At a recent performance of Tosca, I looked around at the audience right before the lights dimmed and almost every seat seemed to be filled, though I did see a couple empty spots. I felt bad for those missing the performance. During intermission I mingled with my fellow opera buffs pointing out that sentence in the program. I wanted to get their opinion. Wasn t the Seattle Opera being a bit harsh? Couldn t the opera be a bit more considerate and compassionate to those who had difficulty finding a place to park or those who simple lost track of time? I could not fine one person who thought the seating policy cruel or unreasonable. (Actually, I did not point out the seating policy nor did I take a poll.) Arriving early is simple part of the opera culture. Every Sunday we have something greater than an artistic performance to watch. Each one of us becomes an actor in the playing out of the Paschal Mystery: the dying and rising of Christ. Untied together we become part of this symphony of salvation, each with our part to play. We are not spectators. All the more important that we all arrive before Mass begins. Mass begins when the large ceremonial doors open and the procession begins. Latecomers will be seated, but at a time causing the least disruption. Latecomers are asked to remain at the door during the Opening Prayer and during the proclamation of God s Word. These words are more important and more beautiful than any aria of any opera. Any movement or scooting past people in the pew limits our ability to absorb these precious words. We are not trying to be harsh to latecomers; we are being considerate and compassionate to the Assembly. Help us change our parish culture of tardiness to a culture of readiness: readiness to enter into the celebration of Mass from the very beginning of Mass. The liturgy will be more meaningful for you and more powerful for the whole Assembly. Two years ago the liturgy Commission set as one of its goal to decrease the number of parishioners arriving late for Mass. At that time 32% of those coming to church were coming late! To measure how we are doing we will be counting those arriving late again. It may happen to be the one weekend you are late for an understandable reason or you may be one of the chronic latecomers. One is understandable, the other needs improvement. The liturgy is too important to miss any part. Fr. Bill M E S S A G E F R O M Y O U R P A S T O R September 17, 2017 Page 1

The theme throughout today s readings from Holy Scripture has to do with forgiveness. We must always appreciate that forgiveness is a two way street. We need to seek forgiveness as all of us are likely to do. However, forgiveness is also something we need to grant to others. Some scholars consider Matthew s Chapter 18 from where our Gospel Reading comes today as perhaps among His most personal teachings to His disciples and others as spiritual leaders. The Lord is in the process of preparing His followers for the time when they (we) must continue His Kingdom without His physical presence. He is trying to build up the sense of fellowship and cohesion among His flock. He makes it clear that for us to accomplish that requires forgiveness and reconciliation. The lesson for us is quite basic: we need to know and appreciate and understand the grace of Jesus and respond by learning how to forgive our sisters and brothers (all sisters and brothers in our Christian and Catholic fellowship). -Tracey September 17, 2017 Page 3
