The rest of the year there is a shrine area in the narthex. The feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story. A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-yearold widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady. Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared. Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan s uncle became seriously ill. This led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or tilma. On December 12, when Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the tilma where the roses had been appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. Mary s appearance to Juan Diego as one of his people is a powerful reminder that Mary and the God who sent her accept all peoples. In the context of the sometimes rude and cruel treatment of the Indians by the Spaniards, the apparition was a rebuke to the Spaniards and an event of vast significance for the indigenous population. While a number of them had converted before this incident, they now came in droves. According to a contemporary chronicler, nine million Indians became Catholic in a very short time. In these days when we hear so much about God s preferential option for the poor, Our Lady of Guadalupe cries out to us that God s love for and identification with the poor is an age-old truth that stems from the Gospel itself. 3 Notice of Unauthorized Ministry The Archdiocese has received reports from some of our parishes that an archbishop and priest of the Missionaries of the Divine Mercy of the Old Catholic Church are in the greater Seattle area and plan to celebrate Masses and possibly confer sacraments. Archbishop Fermin Rosas Garcia, from California, and Fr. Antonio (Tony) Mota, from Mexico, are clergy with the Old Catholic Church, which is not in communion with the Roman Catholic Church and not affiliated in any way with the Archdiocese of Seattle. Any Masses or sacraments they attempt to celebrate are not authorized or approved by the Archdiocese of Seattle. Archbishop Sartain urges all Roman Catholics not to participate in the activities of the Old Catholic Church but to seek spiritual nourishment from the celebration of the sacraments in their parishes. Mass Times Sunday 5:00 pm Vigil (Sat) 9:00 am 11:00 am 5:00 pm (LifeTeen) Weekday in the Holy Family Chapel Mon and Fri 9:00 am Tues and Thurs 6:00 pm Weds 12:10 pm First Sat of the month 9:00 am with anointing of the sick Reconciliation Tues 6:45 pm Fri 2:30 pm First Sat of the month 10:00 am or by appointment CHILDCARE IN THE PARISH NURSERY Sunday during 9:00 am, 11:00 am & 5:00 pm Masses for children newborn to Pre-K How can I give to the Called to Serve as Christ campaign? Selecting the best gift plan depends on one's personal financial situation and goals. Gifts made by cash, check, credit card or Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFT) are the most common and will allow the Archdiocese to address its immediate needs. Checks should be made payable to the Called to Serve as Christ campaign. Gift intentions are made in good faith, but are not legally binding. Archbishop Sartain is encouraging all donors to consider stretching your gift over a three-year period to maximize the total amount of your support. Your commitment can be fulfilled through monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual installments. If you wish, you can give to the campaign gifts of stock, real estate, life insurance and other planned gift opportunities. As tax laws are always changing and everyone s situation is unique, donors are encouraged to consult with financial advisors to determine which method of contributing is most beneficial to them. The archdiocesan Stewardship and Development Office can assist you with making the necessary arrangements for such gifts. Contact campaign@seattlearch.org or In celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe our Multi-Cultural commission will be serving Mexican pastries and drinks in the Parish Social Hall after the 9am and 11am masses this weekend. Join us for food, fellowship and fun. December 09, 2018 Page 2

The request must be made by an immediate relative or the sick person themselves. To request a Mass intention at a weekday Mass call the parish office. Thank you to all who turned in a pledge form during our commitment weekend for the Called to Serve as Christ campaign. We are hoping to wrap up our participation by the end of the year. There is still time to turn in your pledge form. There are blank forms in the pews, and also in the parish office. I have always loved this passage from Isaiah: But a shoot shall sprout from the stump * of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, A spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD. David s mighty kingdom had been cut down by the Babylonians, and nothing remained but a stump. But from this God brings forth a tiny life that will bring forth the salvation of all humankind. We all experience those times in our lives when the bottom falls out, when things or people are taken from us, when we feel that all is lost. This reminds us that God makes all things new, that life comes from Him, and we are never lost when we have Him in sight. -Tracey Rockwell December 09, 2018 Page 3

The Council discussed ways to ensure that the parish Mission, Vision, and Values are incorporated into the goals and work of parish staff and commissions.
