1 St. Vincent de Paul Parish Worship Serve Grow March April 05, 22, th 1st Sunday of of Easter Lent Journey 2018 was a huge success! th Avenue South, Federal Way, WA (253)
2 Who are we? Mission Inspired by the Holy Spirit and empowered by the Sacraments, our diverse community worships, serves and grows in the love and knowledge of Jesus. Vision We are a growing Catholic community united and passionate in deepening and sharing our relationship with Jesus Christ through justice, love, and compassion. Parish Staff Parish Office Hours: 9 AM TO 3:30 PM Parish Office Fax After Hours Emergency phone: 1 (855) Priests: Fr. William A. McKee, Pastor, x207 Fr. Thomas Vandenberg, Pastor Emeritus Deacons: Del Hoover Juan Lezcano, OFS Pastoral Assistants: Adult Faith John Simpson x 209 Children's Faith James Nguyen x208 Office Staff: Business Admin Tracey Rockwell x 204 Bookkeeper/ Communications Diana Carasa x206 Facilities: Marty Krause x214 John Rachulap Jose Vaqureo Youth Ministry Brita Jaingue x210 Vanessa Tompkins x218 Lay Ministry Katie Goodson x205 Admin. Asst. Kim Bowman x202 Shirley Hemmer x203 Receptionist Shirley Hemmer x201 Jennifer Tankiewicz x201 Parish School: Wanda Stewart Principal x236 Singing We have asked you to define your spiritual needs and reflect on how the parish can help meet those needs. Some responses have been very general; some have been very specific. In most of the responses there are common themes emerging. A small few that imply a personal preference that is inconsistent with Catholic way of doing things. One wrote that their spiritual need was to have a Mass without singing. That will not be met in any Catholic parish trying to follow the instructions of the Roman Missal. Fr. Paul Turner, noted liturgist, has written: Singing is the sign of the heart s joy (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 39). When we praise God at Mass each Sunday, we come with a joyful heart. We are grateful for the gift of life and all our many blessings. We leave the comfort of our homes and bring ourselves to church, where we gather with others who have made the same sacrifice. There we do something we may not normally do. We sing. Singing has been a part of Mass ever since the Last Supper (Mt 26:30). The first Christians sang psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Col 3:16). We echo them. Great importance should therefore be attached to the use of singing in the celebration of the Mass (GIRM 40). Our songs are formed by the rhythms and melodies of old traditions and contemporary cultures. They help us express the joy in our hearts as well as our sadness, our wonderment, and our hope. Everyone is invited to sing at every Mass. Every care should be taken that singing by the ministers and the people not be absent in celebrations that occur on Sundays and on Holydays of Obligation (GIRM 40). Music belongs at every mass. It helps us participate with body, soul, mind, and strength. One of the purposes of the opening hymn is to foster the unity of those who have been gathered (47). When you arrive at church, heart filled with joy, you express your faith in God and your unity with others in a beautiful way. Our parish musicians and liturgy commission are trying to find a way to hear from you and find out what hymns you like. When we sing hymns you know and like it is easier to join in. I think we do sing well. Thank you to all who open a hymnal. -Fr. Bill M E S S A G E F R O M Y O U R P A S T O R April 22, 2018 Page 1

4 Liturgy & Prayer PARISH For Individual and Family Reflection Next Week's Reading April First Reading: ACTS 9:26-31 Second Reading: 1 JN 3:18-24 Gospel: JN 15:1-8 Catholic Bible is available at registration We are opening early registration for religious education programs for a limited time! Let us Pray for... the sick in our Community: None those in our Community who have died: Ralph Scholz, Father of Ron Scholz On April 29th/30th, we will be handing out registration forms during all programs. Ask your children for your family s pre-printed registration form. We ask that you return your family s form & payment the following week at programs or to the parish office. For every family that completes these steps by end of day on May 14th, they will be entered into a drawing. The PRIZE is having the entire family s religious education program fees waived for the school year! A note from your Pastoral Assistant for Administration Prayer Requests Have a prayer request you would like the parish staff to pray for? Visit our parish website at and click on the Can We Pray for You button. To add a name of a sick person to the Prayers of the Faithful at Mass, please call the parish office ( ). The request must be made by an immediate relative or the sick person themselves. To request a Mass intention at a weekday Mass call the parish office. Managing a parish campus of this size includes providing safety and security to our parishioners and our parish property. Although we have activities going throughout the week, our largest gatherings are at our Sunday Masses. This raises the question, what if something happened (an earthquake, fire, medical emergency) during Mass? In a parish as large as ours, we would need people trained in emergency response procedures to help out if something occurs during our Mass times. On three evenings in May, (May 2, 9, and 23) from 6:00-8:00 in the evening, we are conducting emergency response training to all interested parishioners. You do not need to attend all three evenings but each will contain vital information and protocols. The training is provided by certified responders, and covers various emergency situations, including active shooter. The safety of our parishioners is a priority please consider participating in this important training. Thank you! -Tracey Rockwell April 22, 2018 Page 3
