The death penalty Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good. Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption. Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person, [1] and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide. PARISH The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary A Holy Day of Obligation Masses are at 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 15th There is an ice cream social after the 7:00 PM Mass Due to the Solemnity of the Assumption there will not be Mass at 12:10 on Wednesday. A note from your Pastoral Assistant for Administration In today s Gospel reading, the people, hearing Jesus message, do not understand. But rather than take their complaint to Him as Elijah did in the first reading, they begin to complain amongst themselves about him that s murmuring, and it is counterproductive. It seems today there is a lot of murmuring, from all sides. It can wear us down. Feeling worn down at times is actually part of the stewardship journey. It can mean we are giving our all to the life God is calling us to live, but it is also a sign to us that we need to find new strength, and new inspiration. There is a movie currently in theaters that can provide some much needed inspiration in these times Won t You Be My Neighbor?, a documentary about Fred Rogers. It is a moving tribute to a man who devoted his life to providing a message of love, kindness and personal dignity to children.
