1 Warwick Weekly Weekly Newsletter - May 24, 2015 Summer Ministry Program.. WMUMC is embarking on a new summer ministry program and we need your help. Please join us on Thursday, May 28th at 10:30am in the Fellowship Hall to learn more about the children s summer lunch program that we will be participating in during the summer beginning June 22nd. We will be providing space for the free/discount lunch children in our community to come and get a free lunch through this government subsidized program. We will need volunteers to help every day, 5 days a week, to serve the food to the children and clean up afterwards and volunteers to help with daily activities, which will include reading, story telling, crafts and gym time. If you would like to learn more, please come to this meeting or call the church office at To sign up to volunteer, please visit the website wmumc.org and click on the link. This Week... Bishop Young Jin Cho has called for all Virginia Conference United Methodists to observe a conference-wide Day of Prayer today along with our observance of Pentecost and Memorial Day. As part of this, our worship services will invite all to a special prayer practice, and we will introduce our new daily Cycle of Prayer. Paul wrote, Follow my example, just like I follow Christ s. (1 Cor. 11:1) Last week we began a new series based on people from the Bible and how they can help us understand and live into a good relationship with God. To make the list, we surveyed you (thanks to all who participated) and we came up with the following: 5/24 Martha and Mary 5/31 Esther 6/7 David 6/14 John the Baptist Help Needed for Local Mission this Saturday! Hands Across the City - Courthouse Green Blitz Day is Saturday, May 30th. All ages can help. You can join us for part or all of the day. 2 Hands Across the City Courthouse Green Blitz Day Next Saturday, May 30th! Based on the information we are receiving through our successful canvassing of the Courthouse Green community (many thanks to all who helped!), we are gearing up for a local mission, our first Hands Across the City Blitz Clean-Up Day, on May 30th, 7:30am to 4:30pm, doing external work to improve the homes of people in need. We will meet for instructions at 7:30am in the Celebration Center Gathering area. Please dress appropriate for outdoor work, bring work gloves and sunscreen/hats. Lunch will be coordinated and provided, however please bring needed personal snacks and personal water/drinks as needed. Coolers will be available on-site, too. If you are coming later in the morning or day, please contact Pastor Gina so that she can direct you to a site location in Courthouse Green. Our work will include: * trash pick-up * raking * mulching & general yard work * exterior painting * cleaning gutters * minor home repair to the exterior of homes You can come for part of the day or all of the day and we will have lunch for you in the community. Children and youth are welcome to participate with parent or grandparent supervision and will be assigned to sites that are appropriate for their ages. We are still in need of: site leaders, workers of all ages, a lunch crew, tools and some pick-up trucks for mulch (tools include: rakes, power washers, paint brushes, paint scrapers, etc.). The rain date for this event is Saturday, June 6. Please Pastor Gina (pastorgina@wmumc.org) to sign-up to volunteer by May 30th, or visit the website to register. Courthouse Green is a home community located near our church in our neighborhood of Denbigh, behind the area where the K-Mart was located. This is a diverse community that is noted as at-risk due to the percentage of aging and low- income residents, as well as the growing influence of crime in that area. So, pray for our neighbors and come out to help make a difference. Habitat for Humanity.. Another Way to Be God s Hands Across Our City The Newport News City Manager s Office has offered us the opportunity to fix the exterior, (except for the roof), of one or more homes that are owned by seniors, disabled, or low-income on Saturday June 27 from 8 am until 3:30 pm. The only requirement is that you be 16 years old by that date. We need more volunteers! We already have two experienced site leaders from our church who will plan the work, train and guide the volunteers. The materials and lunch will be provided by Habitat for Humanity. Take this opportunity to invite others from outside the church! There are sign up sheets in the following locations: the Serve Team bulletin board just outside of the choir room, the bulletin board by the Sunday School (SS) office, the bulletin board by the Celebration Center, and in the Sunday School classes. For questions contact Carlos Liceaga at carlosliceaga@cox.net or Page 2

3 Other Ways You Make a Difference... Kits for Conference: You are invited to be part of a 75 year tradition in providing relief supply kits to vulnerable people across the globe. Every year our church helps UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) by sending kits to our annual Virginia Conference. Cleaning buckets and bedding, sewing, birthing, health, school and layette kits are then sent to the UMCOR warehouse in Louisiana, the primary distribution point for these much needed life-sustaining items. UMCOR has asked the local churches this year to help replenish their supply of school and health kits. The WMUMC Women and the Children's Fellowship ministry have already prepared a number of health, school and layette kits. Now we need YOUR help. Last year the monetary value of the kits provided by everyone in the church was $2,174. The kits we have prepared so far have a value of $1,800. With 100 more health kits, we could provide $4,000 worth of kits! Please consider adding to our church s efforts to support this very important and effective ministry. One Health Kit includes the following items: 1 regular hand towel (15 x25 up to 17 x27 ) kitchen, cleaning and microfiber towels NOT acceptable; 1 washcloth; 1 comb - no longer than 6 (no pocket combs or picks), rattail combs and combs without handles are acceptable with a minimum of 6 of teeth; 1 metal nail file or clipper; 1 bath-size soap -3oz or larger (no Ivory or Jergens); 1 adult size toothbrush; 6 adhesive bandages - 3/4 to 1 size; 1 one-gallon size plastic sealable bag; $1 to purchase toothpaste. Donations of any of these items will be put towards packaging the kits. All items must be new and in original packages. Any questions, contact Carol Beran at c_beran@yahoo.com or Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.. Luke 10:42 UMCOR Nepal Response - How You Can Help: United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the disasterrelief arm of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, is responding to the devastating earthquakes that have rocked Nepal killing and injuring thousands of people. Search and rescue operations continue. Countless people are homeless. UMCOR approved a grant of $90,000 for international partner GlobalMedic to bring sorely needed clean water to survivors through provision of household and public waterfiltration units. UMCOR also is in conversation with United Mission to Nepal (UMN), a partner in community-based health and education projects in Nepal for more than 60 years. Give to UMCOR International Disaster Response, Advance # Your gifts to UMCOR International Disaster Response make it possible for UMCOR to respond quickly to emergency situations through local and international partners. You can place your donation in the offering plate with Advance # in the memo line. Summer Mission Camp: If you are looking for some hands-on mission this summer, look no further. All God's Children Camp is a perfect opportunity to become a mentor to a child whose parent is incarcerated. This is a week long camp where the campers get to experience all the joys of summer camp such as archery, swimming, horseback riding, hiking, camp fires, s'mores and much more. Most of the campers will be experiencing these things for the first time and it is such an awesome thing to witness the joy on their faces as they zip line, participate in a high ropes course and sing silly camp songs. What makes this camp so special and unique is the one-on-one mentoring relationship for the campers and teaching conflict resolution and self esteem building to better equip them as they return to their daily routine. Camps at the week of August 2nd to the 7th and 9th to the 14th. Please contact Lori Smith, Director, All God's Children Camp at lttlelori@gmail.com or Page 3

It is with excitement and happiness that the SPRC announces that our co-pastors, Rev. Gina Anderson-Cloud and Rev. Bert Cloud, have been appointed back to Warwick for another year to continue their spiritual leadership of Warwick. The past two years under their leadership of our church has made us grow in so many areas and we look forward to the future, under their continued leadership. We are excited to see how Warwick will continue to be God s servant in the community and world. Thank you Pastor Bert, Pastor Gina, and family for being willing to lead us for another year. Flames and James - Men's Summer Bible Study: It's time to fire up the grills and spend some time with other men staying in God's word this summer. Our second year (remember Grill and Phil last summer?) backyard weekly meetings will start Tuesday, June 16 th at 6pm and continue every Tuesday through the summer. Host home will provide meat and drinks and others are invited to bring a side. The first week we will meet at Gerry Mingee's at 6 Canter Court, NN, and we will start discussing the book of James. We will be looking for volunteers to share their backyards by hosting. If you have questions contact Gerry at or ggmingee@verizon.net. Hope to see you this summer! 5 Volunteers Needed Volunteers Needed for Vacation Bible School G-FORCE : June 22-26, We are still in need of Pathfinders (to travel from room to room with the children) and someone to organize and coordinate the decorating team. We also need someone to work with Checkers (the puppet) during opening and closing sessions. Watch the bulletin board in the hall near the Fellowship Hall for snack donations. If you would like to join the team or help with this event coordination, please contact Bonnie Turner or Sharon Ellis Please register your children today on the link on our website at wmumc.org. There will be a child protection policy training for new volunteers and those that have not had training in the last year. Date and time will be posted next week. We Need Volunteers: How about helping with counting the offerings taken in on Sunday morning? There is a need for help on the 8:30/9:00 counting team and on the 11:15 counting team. Only one member of the team needs to feel comfortable working on a computer. You will be asked to work one Sunday a month. Training will be provided by Joe Young. If you are willing to help, please call Joe at or him at jwkyoung@cox.net 8 is Enough Groups Forming Now - Are you new to the church and want a fun and easy way to meet members? Have you been going to church here for a long time but would like to get to know other members better? If so, then being in an 8 is Enough Group may be for you. It's only a 4 month commitment. At the end of the 4 months, the members of the groups will rotate to form new groups. At that time, you can choose not to continue in the program, if you wish. New Groups will be formed soon for June, July, August, and September. Once a month each group goes to a local restaurant of their choice for dinner/lunch -- the date and time is decided by members of each group. It's a fun and informal way to meet other members of the church. If you would like to be added to a group or if you would like your name removed from the list, please call Cathy Haskell at or at jjboys@aol.com. If you would like to be in a group that only meets for lunch instead of dinner (usually on Wednesday), please indicate that in your message. Warwick By The Numbers Attendance 5/17/15: 8: :15-92 Total Worship Attendance: 262 Total Sunday School Attendance: 131 We Need Your Help! Our Health Resource Team, HeaRT, would like to provide our church members and the surrounding community with programs and activities that will address health and wellness issues that reflect our needs and interests. To do this, we need your help! During the month of May, there will be a Congregational Survey available on our website (wmumc.org) as well as in the Narthex and Church Office. This survey is voluntary, but we need everyone s input to best prepare for programs. This information will only be used for planning purposes. Thank You!!! Holy Conversation: At the prompting of Bishop Cho, in preparation for the Virginia Annual Conference 2015 slated June in Roanoke, we are offering a time of Holy Conversation on the issues of human sexuality and the United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 7 th from 2 to 4pm in our church fellowship hall. This is a time to listen to one another in the Spirit of Christ across differing opinions. This is not a time to win an argument or even persuade others to believe as one might. It is a time as our bishop has suggested for listening to God speak in our midst and across strong differences in theology and opinion. If you would like to be a part of planning for this conversation, there will be a planning meeting this Wednesday at 6pm in our church library. All are welcome to be a part of this important conversation before our denomination. Resources for consideration are available from the VA UMC at: vaumc.org/pages/news/2015va-news/2015 vanews_holyconversationresource. Page 5
