2 2 Pastor s Page Pressing On - Part II I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Phil 3: We are now in a season of time where we are invited to reflect on women who have had a positive impact in our life. This is especially true for me as my mother s birthday is April 29th. I am blessed to say that I had a wonderful mom. It is because of her and her parents that I was carted to Sunday school at an early age. It was there where I learned the great stories of the Bible. I can t say that I understood those stories, but I did begin to understand that there is a God over all and that He is a God who loves His creation, including me. Unfortunately, this church was not an entirely positive influence on my mom. Like me, she learned that there is a God over all, but during the years of her youth, she heard many a sermon on damnation. One memory she shared involved her physically trembling for the well being of her soul, fearful that God was going to send her to eternal flames for wearing jewelry. Wanting to be right with God, she crept out of her house alone and cast her only ring into the depths of the outhouse. Ultimately, my mom concluded that she could never live up to God s standard and resigned herself to everlasting doom. It was not until the 1970 s that she began to understand the love of Jesus and the righteousness and peace He gives. This brought joy and hope to her. Isn t it sad how often churches, thinking that they re sharing the Good News, actually chase people away from the God who intensely loves them? With her newfound sense of love, forgiveness, and acceptance, my mom began to faithfully serve. Her gift was singing, she had a wonderful alto voice that was guaranteed to inspire any who listened to her. I have many fond memories of seeing her angelic expression as she lifted her voice to the heavens. Life has its way of throwing us curve balls that shatter the glass illusion of our assumptions. It was assumed that Dad would pass before Mom, after all, the men in the Johnston family did not have a history of longevity. So it was with shock and denial that I found myself standing by Mom s hospital bed in I never imagined that I d hear the words, If you have anything you want to say, you d better say it now. Nothing in all of my life had prepared me for this moment. As the tears flowed from my eyes, I told my Mom three things: that she was a great Mom, that I loved her, and that I would keep pressing on in the faith. She died peacefully a few moments afterward. You cannot begin to imagine all that has transpired in my life since 2006 but two things stand out: God s abiding love and presence. Like my Mom, I have experienced God s deep and profound acceptance and forgiveness through Christ. I m pressing on, and it is my prayer that you are too. Pastor Marty
