Fr Kieran provided his experience and guidance on building a new church. Here are some of his points: No fan shaped church Cruciform and Basilica style churches are currently being approved and built Bap smal font towards the front, off to the side Bishop prefers Tabernacle behind the altar. Exterior of building must look like a church The door access by the majority of the parking will be the main entrance/exit Have a cry area, but integrate it into the worship space There is no main direc on (east, west, north south) for the altar posi on Consider making the Adora on Chapel and the daily Mass Chapel one in the same Building commi ee: 1. Have a leader that can keep people focused and move the project forward 2. No more than 12 people 3. Consider people with a stake in the Parish (young, middle age and older) 4. Survey the Parish 5. 3 Page 3 Pentecost Sunday - May 15, 2016 A Message from Fr. Bob Dear Friends, I have some exci ng news to share with you! Myself, along with Fr. David Wathen, O.F.M., have planned a special pilgrimage to the Holy Land and we have room for a few people to join us! We will depart the United States on February 9, travel to Tel Aviv, Netanya, Tiberias, Haifa, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem to men on but a few, returning to the U.S. on February 19. During our visit, we will follow in the footsteps of Jesus and the prophets, making scripture come alive. I am so excited about this pilgrimage and hope you will consider joining me! We only have room for 25 people, so if you have been thinking about making a trip just like this one, please pick up a brochure in the entryway by the main doors and commit to joining us! Did you no ce we have a new image of the Divine Mercy above the devo onal candles in the Southeast corner of the church? The Divine Mercy group here at St. Benedict graciously asked if they could donate the picture for our worship space and I accepted. As I ve told you before, the image of the Divine Mercy became popular in recent years, rising to prominence when Pope John Paul II ins tuted Divine Mercy Sunday. This devo on is new to the church (the picture was originally painted in 1934) and rose to popularity through the Catholic laity, many finding the image of Jesus with the two rays of light compelling. St. Faus na writes in her diary that The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls... These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross. During this Year of Mercy, the image of the Divine Mercy is especially relevant. Part of St. Faus na s message was to pray before this image, entrea ng God s mercy for the whole world. I wish to thank many of you who have responded posi vely to our Erase the Debt program. Blue envelopes for the debt reduc on are s ll available at the entrance doors of the church. Thank you very much in advance for your support. As we complete the Easter season with the feast of Pentecost, I ask that you con nue to find ways to show mercy in this world. Lent and Easter are two seasons which encourage special efforts in the church, but we must not forget that the work must con nue during Ordinary Time. The recep on of the Holy Spirit during Pentecost gave the disciples the courage and strength to spread the good news of Jesus to all those they encountered. Let us do the same. On Monday you will no ce the environment of the church changing back to our Ordinary me worship space. The priest will be wearing the green chasuble and stole. The Deacon will also be wearing a green stole and cincture. In addi on, our Altar Servers will be pu ng on green cinctures. We can think of this green me in the church as a me of growth. This is the me between feasts and prepara on for feasts when we se le into the way we want to live our daily lives. Let our lives be filled with God s grace, sharing his love with all whom we encounter. Wishing you a blessed and frui ul week! ~ Fr. Bob

4 Page 4 stbenedict.org Faith Forma on & More Update for Erase the Debt After just two short weeks we are thrilled to share the progress of the Erase the Debt campaign - and it is nothing short of amazing! You have contributed $11,150 to Erase the Debt! This total includes all envelopes collected at Mass and all one-time, online donations. Thank you to all of you who have made dedicated gifts to this effort, we are so grateful. All monthly debt gifts will be included in the total raised at the end of the month. **Note: Due to the timing of receiving gifts, counting and recording, the amounts may differ slightly from what is posted in the general collections box in the bulletin. At the end of the month we will ensure that all the figures add up. www Marriage Encounter Today we celebrate the feast of Pentecost - the sending of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, the Comforter to come and dwell in us, God s children. Liturgy Corner During the en re Easter season, all the Masses are celebrated with fes ve solemnity, star ng with Easter Sunday, the supreme day of the Chris an year. Now, 50 days later, we are celebra ng the Solemnity of Pentecost, which marks the end of the Easter season. Both Easter and Pentecost -- the bookends of the Easter season -- have required sequences sung or recited a er the Second Reading. A sequence (La n: sequen a) is a chant or hymn sung or recited during the liturgical celebra on of the Eucharist. It is more like a poem. The Sequence for Pentecost Sunday is one of the great jewels of the Roman Rite. The text alone is a treasure short, simple, profound, and transcendent. The text reminds us of the Holy Spirit s protec on and comfort, and of God s infinite mercy and forgiveness. We are also called to inward transforma on, forgiveness, and compassion: Bend the stubborn heart and will. Melt the frozen. Warm the chill. Guide the steps that go astray. This hymn appeared first in liturgical books around the year It has been variously ascribed to Pope Innocent III (1216), to King Robert of France (1031), and even to Saint Gregory the Great (604). Most probably, however, its author was Cardinal Stephen Langton (1128), Archbishop of Canterbury. The poem has been known from medieval mes as the Golden Sequence because of its richness in thought and expression. Each one of the short stanzas is a sentence in itself, thus facilita ng medita on. During the sequence today, let us pray: Come, Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love! ~ (USCCB, online Catholic encyclopedia)
