3 Page 3 Fi eenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 10, 2016 A Message from Fr. Bob Dear Friends, I hope you had a very enjoyable Independence Day Weekend. All of the Masses were light in a endance because many parishioners had gone north to escape from the heat. Some even went out of state. Wherever you were, I hope you had a good me and enjoyed fireworks either live and in-person, or in the comfort of your living room on the television. As for me, I was invited by parishioners to the Mesa Country Club. I went with my niece and brother and had such a great me. Thank you Ryan and Stephanie Edwards for the invita on! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome David Rees, our Youth Ministry Coordinator, and the EPIC group of teens back from the Leadership Conference in Kansas. According to David and the teens I talked to it was a powerful experience for them: faith-filled, spiritual and enlightening. I m so proud of David and his Core team. I would like to thank parishioners who contributed money that enabled the teens to travel and a end the Conference. Thank you for your generosity and support for our Youth and the Parish. In addi on, allow me to thank the parents for giving their children the opportunity to a end such an enriching Conference. I wish also to let you know that my elder brother, Dr. John Binta, is visi ng from Uganda. He arrived on Saturday, July 2 and is staying with me for four weeks. John is currently employed as a Consultant /Ophthalmologist at Kampala Interna onal University Teaching Hospital in the Western part of Uganda. Prior to that he worked as a Senior Lecturer at Makerere University Department of Ophthalmology. For many years he worked as a government Consultant and Director of the Ophthal Clinical Training School in Jinja - Uganda. I plan to take him shopping, swimming and to see the sights while also staying cool in these three-digit temperatures. Once again, I wish to remind our parishioners who are travelling, please find a Catholic church nearby and a end Mass on Sunday. Parishioners have been bringing back bulle ns from churches they a ended. At least it is proof that you a ended Mass! For me, as a Pastor, it gives me an opportunity to learn what is going on in parishes throughout the country. Last but not least, if you are s ll using the regular envelopes for your weekly offertory, do not forget to mail them to the Parish office or drop them off before you go away on vaca on this summer. Many parishioners have been doing this which really helps with the summer me expenses of the Parish. Allow me to wish you a frui ul week. For those who are suffering or grieving the loss of a loved one, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. All parishioners please know that you are LOVED AND APPRECIATED. ~ Fr. Bob

The program consists of eight sessions held on two Saturdays a month, July through October from 10:00 to 11:30 am in the church Mee ng Room. The sessions offer informa on about the grief process. Par cipants will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings, and receive support in a safe environment with fellow travelers on the journey. The next session will be on Saturday, July 23. Your facilitators will be Kathy McCluskey and Terri Bauer. For more informa on or to register, contact Kathy at kathy.mccluskey@cox.net. St. Kateri Tekakwitha St. Kateri s day of Memorial is this week on Thursday, July 14. She was the first Na ve American Saint to be cannonized by the Catholic Church and is the patron saint for ecology and the environment. Recently in Rome, during the seventh edi on of the Interna onal Catholic film fes val Mirabile Dictus, the movie Kateri received the Capax Dei Founda on Award. This award is given to a film with a high value of evangeliza on. The film is authen c to the costumes and was filmed on site of where she lived. The producers have described this film as blessed. Teen Leadership Conference Reflec on Between June 27 and July 1, 2016, eight teens and two adults from our EPIC high school youth ministry program travelled to the Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, for a Catholic leadership conference. The days were long with programming beginning at 6 am and continuing until 9 pm. During the conference presenters talked on various subjects ranging from defending the Catholic Church against Atheism, to humble leadership, to how to be a leader with your faith at school, home and church. We were all challenged to dive deeper into our faith, learning how to humbly serve just at Jesus Christ served us. These challenges came in the form of asking others for prayer requests, attending morning prayer with the Benedictine Monks, praise and worship, praying the rosary, celebrating holy Mass and Eucharistic Adoration. Since becoming Coordinator of the Youth Ministry here at St. Benedict, back in November 2013, with all the events and activities we have hosted or that have been hosted for us, I have never seen such great transformation and devotion from our teens. I am incredibly proud of those who attended and I encourage St. Benedict parishioners to talk with them personally to hear about their experience directly. Finally, I would like to send out a thank you to all of you for your prayers, blessings and financial support. We are incredibly blessed to have had the opportunity to attend this conference which so meaningfully provided for the growth and deepening of faith for our teens.

Liturgy Corner We Enter in Together Through the Introductory Rites: Our First Ac on Towards Full, Ac ve, Conscious Par cipa on as the Assembly [The] purpose [of the Introductory Rites] is to ensure that the faithful, who come together as one, establish communion General Instruc on of the Roman Missal (GIRM), ar cle 46. When we begin to celebrate Mass, we have already made a deliberate choice to be there. We have entered the church, engaging in one of the first ac ons of the assembly that par cipates in the celebra on. We come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Our mo va ons for coming can vary as well. Some mes we come with a true desire to celebrate. At other mes we come seeking hope, comfort, or a sense of belonging. Some of us may feel like our faith is strong, while others may be struggling, looking for answers or seeking reassurance. Yet despite this broad diversity, we come together welcoming each other, united by our faith in Jesus Christ. Whether we get here early, or slip in just in me, we share one Lord, one faith, one bap sm (Ephesians 4:5). We remind ourselves of this when we bless ourselves with holy water; waters which we passed through at our Bap sm, passing like Christ from death to new life. Then, once the Entrance Procession and Hymn are finished, the priest leads the people in making the sign of the cross and greets them. In response to the priest s gree ng, The Lord be with you, we respond And with your spirit. Not only are we recognizing the gi of the Spirit in the person of the priest, we are recognizing the true presence of the Spirit amongst each of us, uni ng us as one Body and Spirit in Christ. We come together as the Body of Christ in thanksgiving, to renew ourselves through the Eucharis c celebra on that is the source and summit of our lives as Catholics. In next week s Liturgy Corner, we will explore why we Stand and Speak as one.
