3 Page 3 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 31, 2016 A Message from Fr. Bob Dear Friends, I hope and pray that you are all doing well and that you are keeping cool during these hot days of summer. I cannot believe that July is gone and that August is here already. Where has the me gone? Some schools have resumed sessions as of last week while others begin this week. Whenever classes resume for the children in your life, we wish you a safe and successful academic year! This is also a me for new beginnings within our parish community. It is my great pleasure to announce that Heather Mooney will be joining our parish staff on August 1 as Coordinator of Children s Faith Forma on. Heather brings with her more than 20 years of experience working within parish ministry and educa on. She has volunteered as a catechist, worked with our youth as a J.A.M. Core Member, coordinated community service events and served as a parish wedding coordinator. Working alongside our Faith Forma on team members, Sr. Colleen Braun, David Rees and Mary Ziebell, Heather will facilitate the Children s Religious Educa on Program, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Liturgy of the Word with Children and Sacramental Prepara on for Children. Heather s posi on replaces the former Coordinator, Holly Forseth, who is now employed at Seton Catholic High School. Heather and her family have been parishioners since Heather and her husband, Patrick, along with their children, Tim, Lauren and Elyse, have been ac ve par cipants in many parish ac vi es throughout the years including Vaca on Bible School and Family Service Saturday (which Heather helped organize at its incep on). We are excited to have the opportunity to work with Heather knowing the many talents and skills she brings to our staff, parish and school. On a personal note, last Friday a generous parishioner chartered a small aircra for my brother, niece and myself. First, we flew to Sedona, then over the Grand Canyon. Despite the bumpy ride, it was amazing to see the Grand Canyon up close from above. We had such a great and wonderful me. Indeed, it was an experience of a life me! Allow me to wish you all a great and wonderful week. Know that you are all LOVED and APPRECIATED. ~ Fr. Bob

SJB Preschool Program The St. John Bosco School Preschool Program is a great op on if you want flexibility in your child s schedule! St. Benedict Youth Ministry is hos ng a parish-wide Faith and Family Night at Chase Field with the Arizona Diamondbacks! Come join us and other churches from across the Valley as we watch our team take on the Cincinna Reds on Friday, August 26, at 6:40 pm. Come join us Saturday, August 6 from 9 to 11 am as we volunteer at Feed My Starving Children on Alma School Road and Southern Ave. Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit, an -hunger, Chris an organiza on that helps purchase, pack, and ship meals to hungry children all over the world! At our last packing session, all volunteers combined were able to pack over 22,000 meals! Dave Belousek is again graciously seeking volunteers to help serve meals to the less fortunate at the Unger Dining Hall in Phoenix on Saturday, August 13. We believe that God speaks to us, his people, par cularly in the Liturgy of the Word at Mass.The scriptures provide a rich treasury of God s con nuing dialogue with us. Not only did God speak to those people, at the me that the original texts were spoken or wri en, but God speaks to us s ll now. The messages that the scriptures contain s ll bear meaning and relevance for us today. Dialogue requires not just speaking, but listening as well. We are called to listen during the celebra on of the Eucharist, par cularly when God speaks to us in the proclama on of the scriptures. There is a difference between hearing and listening. We may hear someone speaking to us, but are we a en ve to what is being said? Dic onary defini ons of listen o en refer to paying a en on, to making some kind of effort when hearing something. True listening is an ac ve rather than passive ac vity. St Benedict encouraged people to listen and a end with the ear of your heart. This is a wonderful explana on of how we are called to listen in liturgical celebra ons. It reminds us that the Word of God doesn t exist simply to teach us, but to transform us. Listening draws us into a deeper rela onship with God, as reflected in Blessed John Henry (Cardinal) Newman s mo o, Heart speaks to heart. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
