3 Page 3 The Bap sm of the Lord - January 10, 2016 A Message from Fr. Bob Dear Friends, Once again, Happy New Year to you all! I hope that everyone has recovered from Christmas and New Years celebra ons. It is hard to believe, but now we are moving into It is the me of year when we are faced with the reality of our lives. The new year has begun and, with it, many of us resolve to make needed or desired changes. Our goal is to set resolu ons that will help us become be er people as we enter the new year. Our challenge is to turn these resolu ons into reality. The children at St. John Bosco School returned back to school last Monday and I had the opportunity to interact with a number of our students. Many were happy and eager to resume school. However, a few said they wished they had one more week of sleeping in, which I imagine most of us do! I assured them that they will have fun back in school. This Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord. It is the first event of his public ministry. This day marks the conclusion of Jesus first thirty years, referred to as the hidden life. This Feast also marks the end of the Christmas de Season, also referred to as the Twelve Days of Christmas. We now begin Ordinary Time in the Church. Ordinary Time lasts un l Ash Wednesday, February 10 this year, also marking the beginning of the Season of Lent. During this Ordinary Time of the year we are called upon to be true and faithful witnesses of Christ. We are called upon to serve God and neighbor. During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis is urging each one of us to prac ce both spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Being a Chris an means that we are called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. It is good to know that we are not alone on this journey. Together, we are the Body of Christ. We all help each other to grow in faith by sharing our gi s and talents. Together, we build the kingdom of God. As parishioners of St. Benedict, I urge everyone to con nue to grow in faith. We have many excellent programs and ministries in the parish for you to join to foster your growth and spirituality. Lastly, I hope you have received our St. Benedict Parish calendar for 2016, printed courtesy of Hansen Mortuaries and Cemetery based in North Phoenix and Sco sdale. Please find some me to send them a word of thanks. Wishing you all a blessed and frui ul week. ~ Fr. Bob

For more informa on contact David Rees at drees@stbenedict.org or ext Rediscover Jesus With help from an anonymous donor each family received a copy of the book, Rediscover Jesus this past Christmas. Jesus wants you to carry on His work is a quote directly from page 15 of your Rediscover Jesus book. What does this mean? Further on that same page it says: How much is the sheer busyness of your life preven ng you from living the life God is calling you to live? This Lent let s make an effort to come to know Jesus and His sacrifice be er. Using the book Rediscover Jesus, read one chapter of the book per day, from the Monday before Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday. There are 40 chapters with a Prologue and Opening Thoughts as well. Also, join together once a week with your family, your neighbors, or folks from the parish who will become your friends, and talk about the chapters you have just read. A li le accountability can do a lot to keep us faithful to our commitment. Groups can meet any me, day or evening, and talk about Jesus in their lives. What a powerful Lent this can be! To help form groups the Faith Forma on team will be available a er all Masses the weekend of January 23/24 with sign-up sheets. No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. ~ John 3:5 Liturgy Corner The Liturgy last week revealed the mystery of God s Plan - that in Jesus all peoples, symbolized by the Magi, have been made co-heirs to the blessings promised Israel. This week, we are shown how we claim our inheritance. Jesus doesn t submit to John s bap sm as a sinner in need of purifica on. He humbles himself to pass through Jordan s waters in order to lead a new exodus - opening up the promised land of heaven so that all peoples can hear the words pronounced over Jesus today, words once reserved only for Israel and its king: that each of us is a beloved son or daughter of God. Jesus is the chosen servant Isaiah prophesies in today s First Reading, anointed with the Spirit to make things right and just on earth. God puts his Spirit upon Jesus to make him a covenant of the people, the liberator of the cap ves, the light to the na ons. Jesus, today s Second Reading tells us, is the One long expected in Israel, anointed... with the Holy Spirit and power. The word Messiah means one anointed with God s Spirit. King David was the anointed of the God of Jacob. The prophets taught Israel to await a royal offshoot of David, upon whom the Spirit would rest, Jesus. That s why the crowds are so anxious at the start of today s Gospel. But it isn t John they re looking for. God confirms with His own voice what the Angel earlier told Mary - Jesus is the Son of the Most High, come to claim the throne of David forever. In the Bap sm that He brings, the voice of God will hover over the waters as fiery flame, as we sing in today s Psalm. He has sanc fied the waters, made them a passage-way to healing and freedom - a fountain of new birth and everlas ng life. ~ Sco Hahn
