St. Benedict Parish helps to host homeless families through this program by giving them a place to stay for a week while acquiring the tools and training they need to get back on their feet. Twice a year our community helps to make the hos ng event a success. The next opportunity to help is between Sunday, December 24 and Sunday, December 31, and volunteers are needed. 3 Page 3 Second Sunday of Advent - December 10, 2017 From Padre Raymond Dear Parishioners: As we celebrate the Season of Advent, there are special points of light in our winter darkness. There was the Feast of Saint Nicholas on December 6, the Feast of the Immaculate Concep on (a Holy Day of Obliga on) on December 8, the celebra on of Hanukkah with our Jewish sisters and brothers which falls on December 12, and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. In light of the upcoming celebra on of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Hosffman Ospino has wri en a recent ar cle en tled, 10 Ways Hispanics Are Redefining American Catholicism. I would like to share five of those with you. (To read the en re ar cle, google the author s name and the ar cle tle, or go to America Magazine.) 1. Hispanics are at the heart of the church s growth. Hispanics account for 71% of the growth of the Catholic popula on in the U.S. since Long before 1776, the first Catholics in, what is now U.S. territory, were Hispanic. 2. Hispanics are forming a new geographic center for U.S. Catholicism. During the second decade of the 21st-Century, a major threshold was crossed: the majority of the U.S. Catholics now live in the South and the West. Hispanics are the major reason for this geographical shi, along with the fast-growing Asian popula on. 3. Hispanics are transforming how we communicate with each other. There are 20 million immigrants, from La n America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, presently living in the U.S. mainland. About 14 million, or 60%, self-iden fy as Catholic. Thanks to Hispanics, in many parts of the country, U.S. Catholicism is de facto a bilingual reality. 4. Two-thirds of Hispanic Catholics in the United States were born here. About half of U.S.-born Hispanic self-iden fy as Catholics. These Hispanics, upon who much of the future U.S. Catholicism rests, are forging a new way of being Catholic. 5. About one in four Hispanics is a former Catholic. Most of them, about 70% made the decision to leave the Church before the age of 24. The top two reasons for leaving: they dri away, and they stopped believing in the teachings of their childhood religion. These reasons are similar to those provided by former non-hispanic young Catholics. Most are joining the ranks of the non-religiously affiliated, i.e. nones. Five centuries ago, Hispanics planted the first seeds of Catholicism in this land. Two centuries ago, European Catholics and their children built a massive presence that con nues to permeate much of the religious and social life of our country. Once again, Hispanics, along with Catholics from various other cultural families, find themselves in a unique posi on to build the founda ons of U.S. Catholicism for decades. No EPIC David Rees Health Update Our Coordinator of Youth Ministry, David Rees, will be going in for his final bone marrow biopsy test on Monday, December 11. The purpose of this test is to see if his Leukemia has gone into remission or is s ll present. His doctors are hoping to have the test results within one to two weeks a er the procedure. At that me, the results will be shared with the parish. David asks for your con nued prayers during this me and is apprecia ve of your support thus far. For details regarding Fr. EPIC will meet on Sunday, December 10, at St. John Bosco from 6:15 to 8pm. JAM will meet on Tuesday, December 12, at St. John Bosco from 6 to 7:15pm. Both par es will have food, fes vi es, and fun! Part of the fun will be a gi exchange...students, please bring a wrapped gi valued at $15 (or less) to par cipate. Also, please be sure to bring canned food items to donate to those in need. By the way, the one who brings the most canned food will receive a special surprise! See you there! Young Men s Conference In our day, there is widespread doubt and confusion surrounding God. Can I know Him? Can I trust Him? Without a connec on to God, it is hard to live without fears and anxie es: Do I ma er? Am I alone? What is my purpose? The good news is that there are ways to know our meaning in God, to never feel alone, and to live with purpose. This winter, 200+ high school and college men will gather for Rooted, the Young Men s Conference, on Friday, December 29, from 10am to 6pm at St. Bernade e Catholic Church (16245 N. 60th St., Sco sdale). Knights of Columbus The Knights welcomed nine new members to the St. Benedict Council recently. Please welcome: Al Gomez, Michael Grecko, Aaron Avila, Hector Ruiz, Rene Alvarez, Jeff Stevens, John Bell, Mar n Padilla and Patrick Talderan. In the next few weeks the Knights will deliver over 100 coats for the Coats for Kids Program; par cipate in the Adopt-A-Family Program; and set up/take down rooms for Family Promise. The Knights of Columbus is the world s largest Catholic fraternal service organiza on. Any Mass celebrated on December 23/24 concluding before 4pm on December 24 fulfills the obliga on for the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Masses celebrated on December 24 a er 4pm are Christmas Masses and fulfill the obliga on to a end Mass on Christmas. This year, New Year s Day (The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God) falls on Monday. Though it remains a Holy Day, there is no obliga on to a end Mass.
