3 Page 3 The Ascension of the Lord - May 8, 2016 A Message from Fr. Bob Dear Friends, During the month of May, Catholics take me to honor the Virgin Mary. On Friday, our St. John Bosco students held a May Crowning, giving our statue of Mary a beau ful crown of flowers to represent the love we have for the mother of Jesus. As we honor our own mothers on this Mother s Day weekend, let us also think about our other mother, the one who is with us always, listening to our sorrows and our joys and holding us in the comfort of her arms throughout our lives. In thinking about Mary and the blessing she is to our lives, we can honor her by reci ng the Rosary. In some Catholic cultures, especially in my home country Uganda, the devo on to Mary is so strong that families gather daily to pray the Rosary together. During this month of May, I would like to ask you to consider joining together with our parish before morning Mass to recite the Rosary, or bringing this daily prac ce into your own home. Some mes, we are nervous about saying the Rosary if it is not a prayer we are accustomed to saying. What if we forget a bead or say the Nicene Creed instead of the Apostles Creed? On occasion, those fears stop us from doing the thing God calls us to do: pray. There are no mistakes in prayer! Although, if you are worried, please join us on a weekday morning before daily Mass. We will provide you with a laminated sheet that will guide you through the Rosary. Did you know that according to tradi on, the concept of the Rosary was given to St. Dominic in 1214 in an appari on of the Virgin Mary? Then, in 1520, Pope Leo X officially approved it for use by the laity. We have been praying the Rosary for hundreds of years! The Rosary is one of the most recognizable forms of prayer, due to the use of special beads. When we pray, we use these beads as a way to help us remember where we are in the prayer, but also as a way to engage in prayer in a physical way. Using prayer beads is a prac ce common to Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim and Chris an religious tradi ons, sugges ng that prayer is an act that benefits from incorpora ng as many senses as possible. Please take some me this month to experience the power of praying the Rosary for yourself. Last weekend, we kicked off our Erase the Debt campaign. We are so close to paying off the mortgage on the current worship space and we need your help to finish strong! Our church building is what enables us to gather together to celebrate our faith and do the good works Jesus asks us to do. Thank you for recognizing the importance of our gathering space and helping us pay down the debt. Blue envelopes are located by the entrance doors if you would like to contribute. Every li le bit helps! I was encouraged by the many people who approached me last week saying, Father, we are going to help you pay off the debt. Thank you to all of you who have responded posi vely. In closing, I would like to ask for your prayers as we con nue our search for the right Director of Music to guide our parish in sung prayer. Thank you for keeping this community close to your hearts! ~ Fr. Bob

Red is a symbol for the Holy Spirit, and Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit first came down to the early followers of Jesus, which also means it is the Church s birthday! Let s give Fr. Bob a reason to smile when he looks out into the church during Mass and sees everybody wearing red! Liturgy Corner The Ascension of the Lord is a feast that affects our lives in the here and now, and could be the key that helps unlock the very meaning of our lives and God s plan for the en re created order. The great western Bishop Augus ne proclaimed: Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For just as he remained with us even a er his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies. When we were bap zed we were incorporated into Jesus Christ, made members of His Body, the Church. Therefore, as Augus ne also wrote, Where the Head is, there is the Body, where I am, there is my Church, we too are one; the Church is in me and I in her and we two are your Beloved and your Lover. In other words, we have ascended with the Lord! He is the Head and we are members of his Body. We cannot be separated. We are reminded why we should rejoice on this Feast of the Ascension. The Ascension does not mark the end of Jesus rela onship with the Church, but the beginning of a new way of his rela ng to the world, in and through the Church. This way includes every one of us who bear his name. You see, we have also ascended with the Lord. When viewed with the eyes of Resurrec on faith, the Ascension is capable of transforming the way we view ourselves and how we live our daily lives. We are joined to him and he to us! ~ Dcn.
