3 Page 3 Third Sunday of Advent - December 11, 2016 A Message from Fr. Bob Dear Friends, I hope you all had a blessed and frui ul week. This weekend, we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, commonly known as Rejoice Sunday. We rejoice because the celebra on of the Na vity of our Lord is near. Christ, the Light of the World, brings us love, peace, joy and hope. As we con nue through Advent, we hear a lot about Isaiah who prophesied the coming of the Messiah, the Anointed One, the Holy One of God. He called people to change their ways, their hearts and to do good. His message of repentance is echoed by John the Bap st, the last of the Old Testament prophets. John prepared the people of God by calling them to repent and turn away from their sins. The messages of Prophet Isaiah and John the Bap st really bring home what the Advent season is all about: preparing for the coming of Christ. No doubt, we are all preparing ourselves to celebrate the Na vity. This past week, I spent some me with the kids at St. John Bosco. They are all very eager to begin the Christmas break. As a Catholic school, we have the opportunity to express our faith in many ways. To enrich the students experience of faith, we make changes to our campus to reflect our Catholic iden ty. On our beau ful campus, you will find statues of saints and the Sta ons of the Cross throughout the year. During this me of year, we also adorn the grounds with an Advent wreath and our students light a candle each Monday morning. We do this to help our students prepare and appreciate the coming birth of Jesus. As we approach the end of the year, many of us are busy preparing for the holidays by comple ng our shopping, wrapping gi s and sending Christmas cards. Though as believers, we prepare ourselves spiritually by a ending Mass and listening to the readings that speak of the coming of Christ and the prophecies that Jesus fulfilled. Drawing upon the teaching of Isaiah and John, we also prepare ourselves by celebra ng the Sacrament of Reconcilia on, washing ourselves clean of sin. I wish, therefore, to remind you all that our Advent Penance Service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13 at 7:00 pm. Please come and take part in this healing celebra on of God s love and mercy. A number of priests have been invited to help hear confessions. Allow me to wish you a blessed and frui ul week ahead. Please know that you are loved and appreciated. Most importantly, you are blessed by the best. Happy Gaudete Sunday. Happy Advent. ~ Fr. Bob

The staff at St. Benedict are crossing their fingers for the items on this year s Christmas Wish List. As a small organiza on with a limited budget, there are o en items needed for ministries that we are unable to accommodate in our annual budget. The staff have put together a list of items that would help them be er serve our ministries. If you have an interest in suppor ng the staff with a Wish List gi, you can find the complete list at stbenedict.org/wishlist You may also contact our Development Director, Suzanne, with any ques ons you may have. She can be reached by at spercy@stbenedict.org or by phone at ext 308. Lord, come and save us. ~ Psalm 146 A en on Envelope Donors We have now been debt free for over a month. However, due to the envelope prin ng and mailing deadlines, we were not able to have the Debt Reduc on envelopes removed from the packets you receive through the end of the year. From now un l the end of December, all gi s made toward debt reduc on will need to be redirected, A staff member will contact you to determine your preferences for these funds. We apologize for any inconvenience. Liturgy Corner If you ve no ced that the Christmas season comes earlier each year, you are not alone. Before the Halloween candy is off the shelves at local stores, the green and red decora ons are up, the holiday sales are being announced, and the path to December 25th is laid bare. How do we keep Christ in Christmas when for months every aspect of the secular celebra on of Christmas is figh ng for our a en on and that of our families? A powerful first step in keeping Christ in Christmas is to take the me to observe Advent. In these weeks, the days get darker, and we journey to the birth of Christ, the Light of the World. We can light an Advent wreath, use an Advent calendar, or create a Jesse Tree. At the start of Advent, read the story of the birth of Jesus in Luke 2:1 14 and Ma hew 1:18 2:12. Then, set up your Christmas crèche early. Place it in a prominent place, and add the figures as they emerge in the story of Jesus birth. Make Christmas about giving, not ge ng, by volunteering or baking for elders. Consider choosing a gi as a family that will serve someone in need, such as a dona on to a local agency or an animal from an organiza on such as Heifer Interna onal. Go caroling, or sing carols as a family. Have a birthday cake for Jesus on Christmas. Hang a stocking for Jesus, and ask each family member to place in it a note with a gi they will give to him in the year ahead. Read these before opening presents. We don t need to put Christ back into Christmas; we simply need to remove the clu er we have placed over him. Source: Trish Sullivan Vanni, Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications
