Elko New Market, MN From the desk of Father Barnes Last week I was going through s and was prompted to read an educa onal ar cle for the Virtus program for the protec on of children, which is standard prac ce in the Archdiocese. There was also a link to watch the newest Virtus training program. I began the program and shortly realized I had already seen it as a part of a group training I had a ended for priests. I kept watching even though I had already fulfilled the requirement. This isn t just a hoop to jump through, there is important informa on that we should be aware of as staff and volunteers. There is informa on that could as the video says, help save lives, including the innocence of a child. There is some inconvenience with all of the rules and policies for those who volunteer. Yet this is now the world in which we live and it will con nue to be this way, and a li le inconvenience is worth it on something so important. We would like to thank you for your coopera on and your openness to helping make the Catholic Church safe for everyone. This will allow us to move forward in the mission of making Jesus Christ known and loved, the reason we get involved in the first place! God bless, Fr. Barnes Communion Call: If you or someone you care for must receive communion at home or in the hospital, please call the parish office. I thought if God wanted someone to be a priest or religious, that person would know when they received "the calling." When I was li le I would always cling to the same rou ne each night before going to bed. I would say to my parents, "Good night." They would respond, "Good night." I then would say, "See you tomorrow, okay?" I would await their response of "see you tomorrow," and if they did not respond, I would say it again louder, "See you tomorrow, okay?" I somehow felt that if they did not assure me that I would see them tomorrow, it would possibly not happen. What would happen to me if I awoke and no one was there? It seems silly now, but to a small boy it was very serious. In our lives, many of us have somehow bought into the no- on that there is so much in the world that can take us away from God. We believe that worldly values, immorality, or evil itself can take us away from God's love and protec on. But there are few greater lies than this. The reality is that if we find ourselves far away from God, the only force that carried us away was our own choices. In John's Gospel, Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me... No one can take them out of my hand." Yes, we are tempted at every side, but no tempta on can take us away from him. Unfortunately, some mes a er ini al choices we find ourselves in addic on or dependency, making our reconcilia on with God impossible without the help of friends and loved ones. But make no mistake, no one or nothing can take those who are his sheep away from God. When you think about this, you realize the importance of your ac ons. The power of your stewardship is great, for by u lizing your gi s you determine if you will draw closer to or wander away from God. The world can't do that. The devil can't do that. Not even the wishful words of a li le boy in the night can do that. Liturgical Publica ons, Inc. Many priests, sisters, and religious will undoubtedly smile at this thought. The word voca on comes from the La n word vocare, meaning to call. A voca on is a calling or invita on from God to serve in a par cular way. For Catholics, that calling might be as a priest, sister, or married person. Voca on is the way we respond to the invita on to share in God's grace and witness to God's love in the world. At mes, that can be a difficult choice to make. Discerning a voca on is the process in which we pray for God's guidance. We listen for God's message that is o en quiet and unassuming in a world filled with noise and distrac ons. We look at our gi s and talents, seek the advice of others, examine our mo ves and listen to see what God is asking of us. The goal of discernment is to follow what the Lord wills, not what we think is the best idea. Many men enter a seminary to discern if that is their voca on, only to discover that their calling is to marriage. Others have resisted the idea for long periods of me, un l finally they could resist no more. Some great saints have described that dilemma. In spite of what we might see as obvious, the call was not that clear to them. Others resisted, like Augus ne, who prayed, "Lord, give me chas ty, but not yet!" Voca on is a human process of divine origin and each of us must strive constantly to hear the call of God in our lives. Liturgical Publica ons, Inc. 5 April 17, 2016 St. Nicholas News & Events Con nued World Day of Prayer for Voca ons Fourth Sunday of Easter In 2016 we mark the 53rd anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Voca ons. Moreover, we celebrate it always on the 4th Sunday in Easter, Good Shepherd Sunday. In today's Gospel reading, we hear about the sheep that always know the voice of the shepherd. May we also hear with ears of faith our Shepherd's call to discipleship. Let us pray... Jesus, good and gentle Shepherd, we pray for those among us who hear your voice and call to a voca on in the Church. Help them to be unafraid of that calling from you of service to the universal church. Give them courage to boldly say yes to your call. Help us to encourage them in their long journey of discernment and forma on. We offer our thanks to you for calling us to discipleship in many and various ways, as married men and women, as single men and women, as priests, deacons, and professed men and women. We ask all these things in the name of the Good Shepherd, Jesus, our savior and our brother. Amen. Dear parishioners of St. Nicholas, Immaculate Concep on, & Holy Trinity, First, thank you so very much for your ongoing support; because of your efforts and sacrifice the debt is down to $867,193. We have an addi onal $155,000 on reserve for future payments. It is with enthusiasm that we, the LNMV CEC board, kick off what we are hoping will be our FINAL capital campaign to pay off the debt owed on our Catholic Educa on Center. True to this enthusiasm, we have decided to start our fundraising efforts with a steak fry dinner. Please join us on Saturday, May 7, at 6 p.m. in celebra on of how far we ve come as we prayerfully look to the goals that remain. We hope to burn the mortgage, not the steaks. Join us for entertainment, drinks, fellowship, and to hear our plans to pay off our mortgage. A generous donor has paid for the event expenses. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the principle of our loan. We are going to run this campaign without hiring a consultant which allows all dona ons to be applied to the mortgage. Advance cket prices are $10 per person and $25 at the door. This covers the steak dinner, 2 drinks, and entertainment. Music donated by The Charlie S cha Band. In order to properly plan for this meal we would appreciate responses sent in by April 20. Guests will be given the opportunity to make their pledges at this, the first opportunity of our campaign, or to prayerfully consider it over the coming weeks. Those who offer pledges on May 7 th will not be contacted personally again in this campaign. Come and join the party, for food, fellowship, entertainment, and help us with our plan to burn the mortgage. For further informa on, please contact Tom Streefland at Jesus, I trust in You!
