1 Page 2 The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2013 Staying With This Sunday marks the formal end of the Church s Christmas season. Jesus' Christmas life has now been sufficiently celebrated. His public life comes next and his baptism begins it. I know, I know, Christmas has been over for ages and we are making ready for Easter eggs or whatever else. But the Church has sense and gives us a Christmas season of weeks instead of just ripping down decorations and going on to the next thing. Good for the Church. So, what about Jesus' public life, beginning with Baptism? In the Gospel we hear the voice of God the Father speaking to him. This only happens twice in the Gospels, though Jesus talks to his Abba often. Both times it is the same message from God. You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased. Who would not want to hear these words over and over? I would. The beloved of God! It is like having candy and circuses and ice cream and all your favorite things. God has settled upon you as his special one. Everything will be fine. Except that being fine is not the real meaning of beloved. God does in fact tolerate pain and suffering in his beloved son, on the cross. This is the other side of being the beloved of God. Suffering, temptation. Jesus heard and went to the desert to ponder. But maybe now he saw the implications. The devil gave him huge, slick temptations to help: build up your earthly power and honor, use your now public status as Beloved. Be big. Directly and deeply contrary to his mission, of course, but God lets them happen. Why? Well, God is like a parent watching a teenager s growing pains. Help all you can, but definitely do not stop the growing. Temptation and suffering create an urgent need for a person to open up, to broaden scope, to understand better what love is, to see that love does not mean God taking charge and making everything alright but rather it means him staying with the beloved, continuing to love and admire him (or her), since love at its root means sharing another s life, not taking it over. To paraphrase the Father s words at the Jordan: Receive my love that never runs away, never lets go, even in the desert, even on the cross. Fr. John Foley, S. J. a composer and scholar at Saint Louis University Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children Tuesday, January 22nd St. Didacus will observe this day with Eucharistic Adoration from 7am-6pm The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated January 22nd as a day of prayer focused on the unborn. As a community we will make this our focus with a day of Eucharistic Adoration beginning at 7:00am and ending at 6:00pm. At 6:00pm we ll conclude our day of prayer with Mass. Plan to spend some time with us that day to pray for the protection of the unborn of our society. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Baptism is a passport to an undiscovered country. People sitting in churches around the world hold this passport, but not everyone is using it. Some may not be aware that the long-ago sacrament they may have been too tiny to remember gives them access to the holy -mackerel, no-kidding, ultimate destination of the kingdom of God! They may also not be clear on the concept that it costs nothing for them to arrive there. The price of the ticket has already been paid. All that s required, really, is intentionality: you and I have to choose to take the journey. Will we do it? Maybe not. Even with a prepaid ticket, we may find excuses not to employ our passport. We may point to the inconveniences of travel, and how comfortable we are with our established routines. The thrill of the unknown is also the anxiety of the unfamiliar. One person s adventure is another s high-end hassle. You encounter too many strangers outside of your comfort zone, and let s be honest: you can t take all your stuff. For many of us, baptism will remain on paper and on file. When have you employed your faith deliberately and purposefully? Where did it take you? Exploring the Sunday Readings REST IN PEACE Berta Long Keep parishioner, Berta Long and her family in your prayers. There will be a Rosary for Berta at the Carmelite Monastery on Thursday, January 17th at 6:30pm followed by a funeral Mass at 7:00pm.

4 Page 5 The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2013 Symbols of Baptism The symbols of the baptismal rite put into focus the primary gift of baptism the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, a share in divine life: Welcome! In 2012, we welcomed the following children into the family of God and into the parish community of St. Didacus through the sacrament of Baptism: Jane Frances O Connor Azul Rodriguez Sandoval Jacqueline Sofia Dombrow Miette James Neuffer Isaac Matthew Wauson Penelope Emma Lee Preston Anthony Krska Jacob Alex David Alex David Velez-Pliego Stephanie Hernandez Rivas Julianna Lynnette Beltran Ramos Olivia Jude Cooper Misael Martinez Arreola Alberto Becerra Levi William Sisneros Anton James Cobarrubias Benjamin Emmanuel Ibrahim Kid s Corner Brrr! In many parts of the world, January is a month for snow time for sledding, making snowmen and having snowball fights. Did you know that no two snowflakes are exactly alike? Every single snowflake is different and unique just like every single person is different and special. No one else is just like YOU! You are different and special and no one else could ever take your place. So be proud to be you and always try to be the best you that you can be! Water plunged into the baptismal waters, we are plunged into Christ s death; rising, we share in his risen life. Water brings both death (to our old selves) and life (new life of rebirth in God). Chrism anointed with Chrism, we share in the threefold office of Christ priest, prophet, king. Our being anointed with Chrism is a consecration of ourselves to conform our life to Christ s. White garment clothed in a white garment, we are reminded of our new, risen life in Christ. We have been given a new identity as beloved daughters and sons of God. We are to live unstained until we come to enjoy eternal life with God. Lighted candle enlightened by Christ, we are also to be the light of Christ dispelling sin and darkness in the world. We ourselves are to be living examples that in Christ the light of salvation has come to the world. Although all of these symbols also imply the demands of discipleship (water-dying to self; Chrism-conforming ourselves to Christ; white garment-living lives worthy of who we are; lighted candle-overcoming the darkness of evil), they primarily help us understand who we become in baptism members of the Body of Christ sharing in divine identity. Greater awareness and appreciation of our identity eases the way for us to be more faithful in our discipleship. Living Liturgy 2013 We realize every Sunday that our Profession of Faith would not be possible if it were not for the many generations of believers who have preceded us. It is rooted in the faith first entrusted to the Apostles, handed down through the bishops of the Church to our very own day. St. Irenaeus of Lyons (d. 202) offers insight into the reality of faith: We guard with care the faith that we have received from the Church, for without ceasing...this deposit of great price, as if in an excellent vessel, is constantly being renewed and causes the very vessel that contains it to be renewed. We are also particularly indebted to those who stand with us to make the Profession of Faith. Together we are there to worship God and by that act are strengthened by being united in that act. We profess our faith together so that we may live together as well. We profess our faith together so that together we may live the fulfillment of that faith in heaven. Fr. James M. Sullivan, O.P.
