1 Page 2 Epiphany of the Lord January 5, 2014 FOLLOWING THE LIGHT Where do we expect to find this newborn king, and who do we expect him to be? The pattern of our own lives is that of the magi: receive God s revelation, seek the Light, follow the light, encounter the Savior, offer our gifts, pay him homage. An important lesson here for Gospel living is that we must go beyond the obvious circle of light to find the true Light of the world that dispels all darkness. We cannot be limited by our own expectations, but must allow God to lead us to the real destination of our life s journey: to the Light who is the newborn king. Then we must allow this king to shepherd us in graceful living. Receiving God s revelation of Light and responding faithfully to where it might lead us always demands of us self-giving. Just as the magi set out on a journey following the star, so is our own Christian journey about following the Light of Christ in all we do, even when it brings us to the Cross. The real challenge of this feast is not simply about following the light of a star to the newborn king of the Jews. It is about where one s heart lies. As the light of Christ shines on us, we are invited to see what lies deep within our own hearts to bring forth what is good, and then to spend ourselves for others. In this way we become a resplendent light dispelling darkness, leading others to the Light that never fades. When we become the light, the light goes a long, long way. Living Liturgy Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come. Something about the changing of the calendars makes us optimistic. The difference between December 31, 2013 and January 1, 2014, may be nothing more than another day to the animal kingdom in general. But to us, the very texture of time seems to have evolved. For a few weeks now, the days have been getting longer. A few more minutes of sunlight are available to us, however cloaked they may seem by the local weather. Things are literally looking brighter than they ve been for a while. Though winter is far from over, the fresh calendar promises a new page on which to write the future. Spring is still months away, yet the renewal of the light is a sign of its slow and regal approach. The prophet Isaiah roused his community to hopefulness by appealing to the radiance of a new day dawning. The people once walked in the darkness of human willfulness, but now they walk in the light of God s holy will. If we really yearn to see the light, radiance begins in the footsteps of divine grace. Exploring the Sunday Readings Christmas is our feast. Today we celebrate God s coming to us so that we might return to him, taking off the old nature and putting on the new. As we died in Adam, so we shall live in Christ, by being born with him, crucified with him and rising again with him. Be glad about his conception and leap, perhaps not like John the Baptist in his mother s womb, but certainly like David, when the ark of the covenant reached its resting place. Honor the enrolment, by which you have been enrolled in heaven. Celebrate the birth, by which you have been redeemed. Respect little Bethlehem, which has brought you back to paradise. Revere the crib, by which you were nourished by the Word, after having lost knowledge. Follow the star and with the wise men offer gifts to him who died for you. Praise him with the shepherds, sing joyful songs with the angels and dance with the archangels. Together let us celebrate the feast in heaven and on earth, for I am certain that those who are in heaven are also rejoicing, because they love the God-man. St. Gregory Nazianzen ( AD), Doctor of the Church

This step-by-step plan will bring you through the Bible s 14 narrative books that tell the whole story of Salvation from beginning to end. By Easter you will have a grasp of the Bible, a better understanding of God s amazing plan and, most importantly, of your role in that plan. It's free to participate. Register for the 90 Day Bible Challenge at Click on the 10-minute studies button. The closing ceremony for the Year of Faith for the Diocese of San Diego was the celebration of Faith Day on November 24, One of the activities of this special day was an essay contest open to schools of the Diocese. The 1st place winner of those essays submitted by 11th graders is a former St. Didacus School student and a parishioner, Andrew Stoddard, who currently attends St. Augustine High School. Here is his winning essay: How I live my Catholic Faith The word Catholic comes from the Latin root meaning universal. Therefore, being Catholic means being universally loving and giving, just like God is. Volunteering is very important for me for this reason. My school, Saint Augustine, makes trips down to Hogar Infantil Orphanage in Tijuana every month. Since the first trip of my freshman year, I have gone on most of these missionary journeys. On my first trip, I was the youngest person there, the only freshman. It was my first time out of the country. At first I was nervous, even a little apprehensive. Then I met the kids. It s funny how God s likeness is reflected in the most unique ways. I was surrounded by children with no parents in their lives. Yet you never could have guessed it from their demeanor. They reflected all the joy, grace, and love of God in a way that made me feel the same. I carried that spirit of giving back with me to America and have worked hard to incorporate it into everything I do. Through God, those kids have given me the will and power to serve others in my words and actions.

Qué podemos ofrecerle nosotros hoy a Jesús?
