5 Page 6 The Life of Jesus Mark 14:12-16, PARISH SURVEY RESULTS-SENIORS ALIVE On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, Jesus disciples said to him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"' Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there." The disciples then went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover. While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Last November we asked you to fill out our Parish Survey to help us evaluate the methods of implementation of our Parish Vision and activities. We thank you so much for participating in this survey. It not only gave us the demographic of our parish, but all the activities that you would like to see implemented. Some of you wrote detailed letters attached to your survey. We enjoyed reading the answers to what you like best about our parish. Thank you for all your input. From this survey, we have planned many new events and continued our old ones. The October Rosary Rally was attended by many and we hope to have another one soon. Our Rosary Society Giving Tree was a wonderful success, St. Patrick s/st. Joseph s Dinner Dance was great fun, and our Lenten Day of Reflection, along with our new Faith Sharing Group was spiritual and moving. Knights of Columbus had great Lenten meals and Communion breakfasts. Our Easter Triduum touched many. Our May Crowning took place on May 6th. Our Spring Concert is planned for this Sunday, June 3rd, and then we get ready for our Anniversary dance over the summer. We would like to start a Singles Social and are putting a committee together for that. For advent, we are planning a Parish Play called Live from Bethlehem, Live from Jerusalem. FRANCIS CARACCIOLO Religious St. Francis, born in the Kingdom of Naples, was signally pious from his childhood. In his youth he determined to consecrate himself to God and he entered the priesthood at Naples, where he began to exercise his zeal, especially in assisting those condemned to die. By a providential disposition, he joined John Augustine Adorno and Fabricus Caracciolo in founding the Order of the Regular Cleric Minors. Up to the time of his profession, he had borne the name of Ascanio, which he now changed for that of Francis, in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. Two years later, upon the death of Adorno, he became superior of the Order. With the object of extending his Order he traveled three times to Spain, clad as a pilgrim and begging his bread along the road. On these journeys he suffered great hardships, but he had the satisfaction of founding several houses in Spain, aided by Philip II and his son, Philip III, who succeeded him in Such was the charity of the saint that arriving in Rome he took up his abode in a hospice of the poor and associated with a leper. He breathed his last at Agnone, in the house of the Oratorian Fathers, June 4, PRAYER God, You adorned St. Francis, the founder of a new Order, with a zeal for prayer and love for penance. Help Your servants to make such progress by imitating him that by praying unceasingly and bringing their bodies into subjection they may be worthy to attain heavenly glory. Amen. ST. WILLIAM OF YORK Bishop A disputed election as archbishop of York and a mysterious death. Those are the headlines from the tragic life of this saint. Born into a powerful family in 12thcentury England, William seemed destined for great things. His uncle was next in line for the English throne though a nasty dynastic struggle complicated things. William himself faced an internal Church feud. Despite these roadblocks, he was nominated as archbishop of York in Local clergymen were less enthusiastic, however, and the archbishop of Canterbury refused to consecrate William. Three years later a neighboring bishop performed the consecration, but it lacked the approval of Pope Innocent II, whose successors likewise withheld approval. William was deposed, and a new election was ordered. It was not until years after he was first nominated that St. William became archbishop of York. When he entered the city that spring after years of exile, he received an enthusiastic welcome. Within two months he was dead, probably from poisoning. His administrative assistant was a suspect, though no formal ruling was ever made. Despite all that happened to him, William did not show resentment toward his opponents. Following his death, many miracles were attributed to him. He was canonized 73 years later. Good things come to those who wait might be the catch phrase for St. William. We don t always get what we want when we want it. Sometimes we have to wait patiently, trusting that if it is for our good, God will bless us.

7 Page 8 Our Faith THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Corpus Christi Now that we have liturgically re-lived with Jesus the culmination of His earthly ministry and His return to Heaven, it might seem that Jesus has, in a sense, gone away. The celebration of Christ the King and His triumphant return to the world He died to save is many months away. To avoid thinking that the long period of Ordinary Time is a time of Jesus absence, the Church calls us to the observance of the Body and Blood of Christ, or Corpus Christi. Our Gospel takes us back to the institution of the Eucharist, lest we forget that although Jesus reigns now over His Church from His throne at God s right hand, He has given us the extraordinary gift of His continuing Presence in the bread and wine at Mass. In a way, liturgically speaking, we are better able to truly understand this gift than when we remembered it during Holy Week. Why? During Holy Week, our meditation of the Last Supper was an anticipation of something that lay ahead. Jesus offered the death He was about to undergo as an offering for sin. He knew that He would receive His life back again, conquering death, so He was able offer the apostles, mysteriously, that indestructible, glorified life in the bread and wine He gave to them. It took Easter and the Ascension for us to fully comprehend that when Jesus rose from death, He entered a new mode of human existence. In His post-resurrection appearances, He did some things humans can do (eat, talk, be touched), as well as some things humans can t do (appear and disappear, be unrecognizable to His best friends, yet known to them). The Ascension took Jesus permanently away into that invisible mode of human existence, but, because His human Body is able to do things ours can t, He can still be present to us in an unrecognizable but known way in the Eucharist. No wonder the Church wants to remind us of this now! Jesus gift of Himself to us in the Eucharist, as the centerpiece of His Church s worship, breaks through the barriers of time and space to anchor us in mystery. For Catholics, the life of Jesus was not simply linear. That is, He did not simply accomplish a cluster of magnificent historical events and then disappear until His return. He did not simply send His Spirit into the world to take His place in the hearts of men and the life of the Church as wonderful as all that is, of course. No, in addition to the life He lived and the Spirit He imparted, He grants us the same mysterious communion with His Body and Blood that His apostles first experienced at the Last Supper. Present on all the altars of the world, He has not left us orphans. The Body and Blood of Jesus (so human, so real) that saved us on the Cross and then rose to Heaven remains within time and space to be ever present for the salvation of the whole world, in all times and places. This is the gift that will enable us to persevere until the end of time. It is the abiding and irrefutable proof that God loves us, flesh and blood. Because of it, although we will soon resume Ordinary Time, nothing can ever be ordinary again. ( A PRAYER FOR THE WHEAT (FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI) Dear Lord, in many broad fields of this vast country of ours, the wheat is growing now. Some is still young and green, some is headed out, and all, before very long, will be golden ripe. Most of it, Dear Lord Jesus, will go to feed the hungry. In countless loaves of bread and in cereals, it will find its way to tables in city and country almost all over the world. Some of it will be used at another table. It will be ground into fine flour and used to make the hosts, the altarbreads for Holy Mass. Priests will take it into their anointed hands and pronounce over it the words of consecration, and it will cease to be ordinary bread, and will become the Bread of angels. It will look as it did before, but we know and believe that it will be the Body and Blood, the Soul and Divinity of You, Lord Jesus Christ, there really present, under the appearances of bread. O Jesus, bless the broad, rich fields of wheat in our whole land. Protect them from hail and beating rains, from blight and rust, from windstorms and drought. Let them be full and rich, so that the hungry may be fed, and may praise You and thank You as You deserve. And may all the Holy Masses that will be said with hosts made of this wheat hasten the day when at last there will be enough reapers working in Your harvest, which is ripe and ready now, waiting only to be gathered home. Amen.

I pray that this Holy Communion be not a condemnation for me, but a saving plea unto forgiveness. May it be unto me the armor of faith and the shield of a good will.
