As we celebrate the epiphany, the appearing of the eternal Word of God on earth, this is s ll true. What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for the day when God s glory would shine on them. How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human lives. We have many expecta ons about how the divine presence will appear among us. But we can also set ourselves up, through these expecta ons, to miss the divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forge ng that the star is not the divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come upon the true appearance of God s glory in our lives: Jesus Christ. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Thank you! TODAY S READINGS First Reading Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The L shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm Lord, every na on on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading The mystery has been made known that the Gen les are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel Magi from the east arrived, saying, Where is the newborn king of the Jews? (Ma hew 2:1-12). The English transla on of the Psalm Responses from the Lec onary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna onal Commission on English in the Liturgy Corpora on. All rights reserved. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the next few weeks, if you were to stroll around Prague or Budapest or Kraków, you might see curious grafi scratched in chalk over some doorways: 20 + C + M + B The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day meal, probably a er Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the le ers C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, La n for May Christ bless this house. The le ers also point to the names that tradi on has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar although scripture tells us nothing of their number, their country, or their names. The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as sa sfying as was the magi s. It prays that the house beyond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethlehem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household custom survived all efforts to erase Chris an customs. In the years of struggle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defiance, and now in the light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradi on and the fulfillment of the magi s quest for meaning and peace. 4 Psalm 72 Every na on on earth will adore you. Do you have a voice? Do you have a song? The cri cal ques on is the second one. Yes, we have a song! The primordial song of the Liturgy is the can cle of victory over sin and death. This is the Paschal hymn, Christ s own song of victory. He teaches us this song and leads us through church doors to the whole world.. to live the joyful consequence of this song: a life of charity, jus ce, and wholeness. Pastoral Musicians Liturgical Choir is s ll on our break. What a great me to call Sr. Mary Joan about joining this group for our Lenten/Easter Season. We really need tenor and bass voices. Junior Choir is off this week. Our next rehearsal in Friday, Jan. 15. We will lead the singing the next day, Jan. 16 at the 5:00 Mass. Caritas Choir is off un l Jan. 14 th. Rediscover Jesus by Ma hew Kelly This weekend at all Masses, the St. Ladislas Evangeliza on Team will be handing out free copies of this easy to read book. Just as the Magi offered gi s to the newborn Jesus, we d like to offer this book to you to support your spiritual growth in Rediscover Jesus is a profound invita on to seek deeply personal answers to our deeply personal ques ons. Each page seems to effortlessly reach deep into our lives, providing spiritual wisdom and prac cal insights that help us get to know both Jesus and ourselves in a new way. Some books find us at just the right me, and those books change our lives forever. Rediscover Jesus is one of those books. HAPPY NEW YEAR!! PARISHIONER SPOTLIGHT Janelle Massaro A few years ago, Janelle and her husband Ben moved to Ohio and joined St. Ladislas. Since they were involved in a previous parish, Janelle knew that she wanted to get involved. I thought it would be a good start being an Usher/Greeter as a way to get to know our new Catholic community. She has been an usher for about three years, with a short hiatus when she had their first child. As an usher, Janelle believes it s important to make all members feel welcome when they come and flash a smile and tell them to have a good day as they leave. I mostly enjoy mee ng parishioners and their families, friends, and visitors and having the feeling of being a community. Janelle feels that she has received many blessings from this ministry, especially the wonderful people she has met. It s great to come to church and see familiar faces and new members that I look forward to becoming familiar with. This welcoming volunteer encourages other parishioners to volunteer for this ministry. It s a great way to get to know your parish families and feel a sense of family while giving back my me. Thank you, Janelle! If you d like to recommend a parishioner for this spotlight who has generously volunteered their gi s and talents in our parish or in our community, please contact Martha Bober at mbober@stlads.org.

Jesus command is directed to anyone willing to listen to his voice. In order to be capable of mercy, therefore, we must first of all dispose ourselves to listen to the Word of God. This means rediscovering the value of silence in order to meditate on the Word that comes to us. In this way, it will be possible to contemplate God s mercy and adopt it as our lifestyle. --Read: Psalm 72: 1-4, 12-14, Reflect: How will I take more quiet me this year to listen to and follow God s direc on for my life? Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Throughout the year, the Adult Forma on Commi ee will use brief por ons of his opening statement, some mes with included Bible references and/or personal reflec on ques ons, to provide instruc on and medita on on the theme of mercy.

God has gifted you in many ways. Please take the time to recognize those gifts. Examples: I am a good listener. I am compassionate to the sick and elderly. I enjoy singing and/or playing an instrument. I like challenges. I believe in simple acts of kindness. I often pray for others. I enjoy meeting people. I enjoy working with others. I am very organized. I always follow through on a task. I enjoy reading scripture. I am good at starting conversations. Parishioner Jeff Sords, a volunteer in our Nursing Home ministry, shares, Volunteering in any ministry at St. Ladislas allows us to put our faith into action and touch other people s lives. We may never see the fruits of that labor. However, it may set off a chain reaction that reaches far beyond our expectations and touches the lives of so many others.

8 God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. Amen
