5 Ministry 2018 No Soul Le Behind draws to a close Last May, parishioners were invited to list the first names of individuals to take that next step in their walk with Jesus. Hundreds of cards were collected. Two weeks later parishioners took home a card or two promising to pray for those individuals un l Labor Day. If you wish, please return your blue card(s). Place them in the Offertory basket or in the blue baskets at the church entrances. A final prayer will be included at weekend Masses on September 1 and 2. We hope that this prayer experience was helpful and beneficial for you. Our team would welcome any comments. You may send them to Martha Bober at mbober@stlads.org or drop them off in the parish office to her a en on. May no soul be le behind as we all journey with our Lord. 9 WOMEN SHARING SPIRITUALITY Some of the women in our parish read and discussed Richard Rohr s book, Falling Upward, last year. We appreciated the challenges and inspira on for our faith journeys presented in the book. As we focus on the Bread of Life in the gospel of John this month, we offer the following reflec ons from Richard Rohr. All my life as a Catholic, I have held the orthodox belief that the Real Presence of Christ is communicated in the bread and wine of the sacred meal When you are really present, you will experience the Real Presence for yourself We can trust and allow what has been true since the first moment of our existence: We are the very Body of Christ. This is enough to guide and empower our en re faith journey. Parish Events Please join us for our next discussion group beginning on Tuesday, September 11. Groups will meet at 9:30-1:00 am or 7:00-8:30pm. Our book is Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. The cost of the book is $9.00. 10 Liturgy Lessons: 2018 episode #4: The Church Building The Catholic Church is a sacramental Church which means deeper reali es are expressed in percep ble signs. The church building is not a neutral place; it is not simply a skin for liturgical ac on. It is a place where prayer happens; it is a temple where sacrifice is offered. The building is a sacramental sign: there is found the Body of Christ. The door signifies the crossing of a threshold, an entry into the Garden of Eden. It is our return to Paradise. THE TEACHING OF THE CHURCH Dogma c Cons tu on on the Church (from the Va can II Council) teaches, O en the Church has also been called the building of God. The Lord Himself compared Himself to the stone which the builders rejected, but which was made into the cornerstone. On this founda on, the Church is built by the apostles, and from it the Church receives durability and consolida on. This edifice has many names to describe it: the house of God, the dwelling place of God; and, especially, the holy temple. (Para # 6) The shape of the building, the door, the threshold, the aisle, the pews, the sanctuary, the altar, the chair-these all mean something. The place for worship is not neutral; it is charged with meaning. IN THE TRADITION "In Sacred Scripture we find many images which bring out various complimentary aspects of the mystery of the Church. The Old Testament favors those images bound to the people of God. The New Testament offers images that are linked to Christ as the Head. Other images are drawn from pastoral life (sheepfold, flock, sheep), from agriculture (field, olive grove, vineyard), from construc on (dwelling place, stone, temple), and from family life (spouse, mother, family)." From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), n. 148 Parish Events FOR YOUR REFLECTION the Body of Christ, the New Jerusalem? What architectural features of our church help symbolize the Gateway to Heaven, Today s Liturgy Lesson is one part of a thirty three part package intended to help us understand and embrace our experience of the Sunday Mass.
