Listen to your Mother All for $10 The emp ness will be filled by him in whom in bodily form lives divinity in all its fullness. (Corbon The Wellspring of Worship, 39) Mary receives into her heart, before ever her womb, the Word of God. She responds with acceptance and fidelity. The Word, in the Spirit, by the will of the Father, is poured out literally filling the empty place in Mary, her womb. Christ literally fills the physical place in the human person that is designed most perfectly for recep vity. I must be like Mary. I must open up the womb of my heart. I must allow Christ to be made manifest in my heart. The emp ness that I feel at mes, that longing and desire, is meant for recep vity. It is the womb of my heart. It is the place of communion meant for the Divine. The only thing that can fill me, the only thing that can bring that barren place to frui ulness, is the Word. It is emp ness, yes, but also longing. It is a place made for communion. My heart, Lord, is weak. I know, Father, that you are the abyss, the deepest, truest, reality. I cannot touch you. I am s ll not ready, but your Word, your perfect reflec on. He can bring me to you. I feel so weak and so helpless. I just want to cry out in longing, Lord, Fill me! Father, send down your spirit to over shadow me. Place your Word in the womb of my heart. Let me empty my heart; carve out all that is not of you. Pierce me with the lance of your love. Let me be the home of your Son. Join me in this prayer, ask the Father to fill up your life with everything that he desires for you!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Perhaps the most familiar tradi onal symbol that iden fies bishops is the crosier that they carry. We see the shepherd s staff and immediately rich images from scripture come to mind, as well as the recollec on that the first to respond to Christ s presence in our world were the shepherds. The staff is more than a walking s ck; its crooked top is useful in snaring errant sheep but also in keeping the flock united. Bishops carry the curve outward, indica ng their ministry to the wider flock, while abbots (and some abbesses, too) carry the crosier with the curve poin ng in, indica ng that their ministry is to the monastery alone. The crosier was once also carried by the pope, but was phased out centuries ago. You may recall that in pre- popemobile days, the pope was o en carried around on a portable throne called a sedia gestatoria. Since he didn t do much walking, the need for a crosier was minimal. Pope Paul VI introduced the innova on of a walking staff in the 1960s, and everyone remembers Pope John Paul II s walking staff, not a crook, but a delicately sculptured crucifix. Thus, the pope carries a pastoral staff rather than a crosier. Precisely because the pope s ministry is universal, to the whole world, popes will likely leave crosiers in the hands of the bishops they commission for care of specific flocks. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. He wanted to be able to offer the use of his talents and abili es to help the group accomplish some of their goals in making St. Ladislas a be er place. Bill s exper se is greatly valued by this group which enhances our worship space and other areas in the church through color, form and layout. He has assisted with many projects, such as making oak wood bases for the church organ and for the cantors to stand on. He fabricated, engraved, and installed the Peace Pole which is in the garden by the north entrance to the church. Bill has constructed bases for some of the floor stands as well as repaired some of the wooden chairs used in Church. In addi on, he has made many Good Shepherd items as well as built the outdoor crèche. This fall he will be recrui ng some help from the Men s Fellowship group in rebuilding a sec on of the creche that was damaged by winds last winter. Bill shares, I would strongly encourage anyone with any ability to step forward and help their parish. You may even realize and learn other talents that you have, as I did. May God con nue to bless us all. Thank you, Bill! If you d like to recommend a parishioner for this spotlight who has generously shared their gi s and talents in our parish or in our community, please contact Martha Bober at mbober@stlads.org.
