He meets a Samaritan woman, who expects him to treat her like dirt. But surprise! He talks to her like a fellow human being, treats her with respect and interest. And what happens? Why, pre y soon the whole town turns out to hear him. Centuries earlier, the Israelites, wandering in the desert, were thirsty. They had no water. All they had was an a tude problem. They growled at Moses, Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? But surprise! God gave them water from the rock. No ques ons asked. All the peoples of Earth are travelers on this planet together, all thirs ng, all harboring our own fearful expecta ons of each other. But God, as a loving parent, treats us all with generous care and compassion. We are one family. We could surprise each other. We could remember we are one. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. We stand witness to the bap sm of adults at the Easter Vigil in many parishes, and countless parishes celebrate fes ve bap sms for infants. The rule for celebra ng bap sm is that it be only once a day in any parish church, a sign of the Church s desire that bap sm be the work of the gathered community. Private bap sm is therefore a misnomer, since all bap sms, even emergency bap sms for infants in danger of death, are a public act of entrance in to the Body of Christ, the Church. In an emergency, and providing the parents desire it, anyone can bap ze by pouring water and saying, I bap ze you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. But then a erward the Church is encouraged to supply what is missing: the gathered assembly to proclaim and hear God s word, the promises, the naming, the anoin ngs, the clothing with a white garment, the candle, the Lord s Prayer, and the solemn blessing of the parents at the altar. Wonderfully, this ritual o en provides the opportunity for great rejoicing at the recovery of an infant who had been in danger. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 5 Psalm 95 IF today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts. Three reasons for singing! I sing at Mass, first, because I pray be er when I sing. Why do I feel that way? Am not sure, but I think it is because a sung prayer is soulful and personal, more deeply seated than a spoken or medita ve prayer because music and singing touch my heart in a way that speaking does not. Second, I sing because singing publically requires some abandonment of self. I open myself to that community. Because my voice is heard by others, by those present, my very private and personal prayer becomes public prayer, a part of something bigger than myself. And third, I sing because in the Liturgy we are a community in prayer, so the singing of my prayer is both a private and communal experience of God s presence, an inward and outward expression of my very personal faith. - Pastoral Musicians Liturgical Choir has rehearsal on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:30 Altos come early. Next Sunday we lead the singing at the 9:00 Mass. Junior Choir does not have rehearsal this Tuesday. Gra tude for having this small but excellent choir lead the singing at the 5:00 Mass. THREE SIMPLE STEPS When Jesus told Simon and Andrew and the others, I will make you fishers of men, he meant that he wanted to teach them the art of evangelization (Mark 1: 17). And that s what he wants to do with us as well. He wants to teach us how to reach people with the good news. God s grace can penetrate the veil over any person s heart as long as you, the fisherman, remain humble and open to God s grace. Here are three suggestions that will help make you into a vessel of grace: First, ask God to give you a desire to share his good news. Second, find the courage to ask people, even strangers, Can I pray with you about anything? You d be surprised at how many people are open to a quiet, nonthreatening invitation. Third, invite people to join you at Mass. Offer to come and get them if they can t make it on their own. Take them out to breakfast afterward. Become a friend, and your love for Christ will rub off on them. Three simple steps. Three simple ways to let the grace of the Holy Spirit work through you. So it isn t too hard to be a fisherman after all! The Word Among Us January 2015 Parishioner Spotlight Ken & Rose Breen Since 1973, Ken and Rose Breen have been actively involved in the life of St. Ladislas parish. Early on, they were asked to become Eucharistic Ministers and were commissioned. They serve at the 11:00 Mass every other month as well as minister to the residents at Rae Ann Westlake Nursing Home. They share, We felt immersed in the life of St. Ladislas and invigorated by the active spiritual life here by both Fr. Cullen and Fr. Snyder. St. Ladislas is our family and gives us excellent foundation and fulfillment. Being Eucharistic Ministers gives us the greatest joy to bring Jesus to our parishioners and to the Nursing Home residents. They greatly appreciate our praying the rosary with them every week, giving blessings, and, most importantly, Holy Eucharist to comfort and sustain them. This kind couple add that it gives them great joy and happiness to belong to the St. Ladislas family. In giving, we receive, share Ken and Rose. In our Eucharistic Ministry, we feel great spiritual joy and fulfillment, therefore, we encourage others to volunteer their service in a ministry at St. Ladislas parish. Thank you, Ken and Rose! If you d like to recommend a parishioner for this spotlight who has generously shared their gifts and talents in our parish or in our community, please contact Martha Bober at mbober@stlads.org.

Families are central to God s plan. The future des ny of the world and Church pass through the family - St. John Paul II. A Biblical and Catholic look at the family. So come and join the rest of your family during the Mission! Family Perspec ves - Third Sunday of Lent When Jesus drove the merchants out of the temple, he was not angry, he was PASSIONATE! Jesus clearly believed in what He was doing! The gospel tells us that because of this, many believed in His name because they saw the signs that He was showing them. If we expect our children to learn our values and beliefs, then they must witness our passion for these values. Just like the people in today s gospel, our children need to see the signs of what we re doing if they are to believe. Children need us to be passionate leaders. 10 What do you see? God is nowhere or God is NOW HERE? God is always HERE, and will never leave! The Westlake Area Youth Group was on Retreat from February 27 - March 1. The group had an amazing me listening to witnesses, sharing Faith stories, ea ng great food donated by the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and even had me for a Hawaiian Luau! The theme of the weekend was By My Side. The Group talked about how God is our Teacher, Parent, Friend, Love of Life and simply our God. The Group asked themselves How do we balance God s Immanence and Transcendence? We need to be careful not to cut God down to our size or to make God in OUR image, and yet we cannot allow the living God to become an abstrac on. During this season of Lent, this is a perfect me to reflect on your own Life and realize how God is Always By Your Side: Do you believe that we can know God personally? Do you really believe that God watches you? Cares for you? Listens to you? Longs for you? Waits for you? Is there to direct and guide you? How have you neglected this rela onship? How have you cul vated your rela onship with God? How have other significant rela onships in your life connected you with God? We are called to be in constant communica on with God - and yet it s very different than any of our other rela onships. God speaks to us in whispers and mysteries, He helps us to know the truth which we didn t know before. How would you describe the ways in which God communicates with you? Do you believe that He truly listens to you? Do you believe that He truly speaks to you? How? Always live the Fourth! Retreat is three days long and the fourth day is a me to reflect and remember how you were effected during the weekend. Fourth day doesn t stop there though! We are called to be disciples of Christ, and Living the Fourth can always help you in this way! We are so grateful for your prayers during the weekend, and we ask you to con nue to pray for the WAY Group. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. -Joshua 1:9
