1 The CMC Times The magazine of the Church of Ireland Parishes of Castleknock and Mulhuddart with Clonsilla October 2018 It was a great day on Saturday 8th September for the Fun Day. The weather held up in the afternoon, a large number of children, parents and grand-parents all enjoyed the day. The magician certainly held everyone s attention, great amounts of energy was used on the bouncy castle, and some rare faces appeared after the face-painter had done her work. The Sunday Clubs, Girls Brigade and Boys Brigade had set out their stalls in the hall. I would like to thank the organising committee and all volunteers who helped on the day. People did comment that they felt very much welcomed and enjoyed the day. In this months issue: In this edition we are looking at some the events that took place in the Parish as well as what is coming up, including our services for October. A couple of items to point out: Our Harvest Thanksgiving Service took place in St. Thomas Church, Mulhuddart on the 30th September. The Harvest Thanksgiving services in St. Mary s and St. Brigid s will take place on Sunday 14th October. The Ecuemenical Remembrance Service and Blessing of Graves will take place on Sunday 4th November at 3.00 p.m. 1

2 The Harvest Our Responsibility Dear Friends In October we have our Harvest Celebrations. No doubt we will sing our well-known harvest hymns, and see the churches beautifully and imaginatively decorated with the fruits of God s creation. However, there is another aspect of the Harvest Thanksgiving, our responsibility and stewardship of God s world. We have all heard by now of Global Warming. We have all heard of areas of fertile land reduced to dust beds because the owners have treated their land irresponsibly. Pollution of land, sea and air have caused enormous problems. What is the Christian contribution in the matter? The issues are technical but I think certain guide-lines can be given for scientists and farmers, and for all. We accept the findings of science with thankfulness. God is the God of truth, whether that truth be concerned with the atom, chemicals, the environment or the incarnation, we accept the findings as coming from God for the service of His creation. We accept that in all of us motives operate which must be controlled and sometimes denied. Avarice, an appetite for quick returns. It is a passion which needs stern handling. Give rein to it, and animals suffer, the fields will suffer, and we suffer. We are world citizens: - we are not just citizens of Dublin, or Ireland, we are members of the world whose most distant members are very close, whom our Lord taught us to regard as Brothers and Sisters if they are in need. They are because of Global Warming and migration has increased greatly. 3 What s happening in our Parish Bowls We are back in action on the bowling mats Wednesdays at 8 pm and Fridays at 7.30pm. Anybody out there who would like to try it out? You would be very welcome to join us. As I write these notes we are looking forward to our visit to Lucan Club for a friendly evening of play and also to attending the Association AGM when we enter teams for the Association competitions. After that it will be Wait and See who we will be drawn against!! Valerie Greene Castleknock Girls Brigade We were delighted to welcome back the girls and a few new girls on Saturday 15 th September and Wednesday 19 th September for another year of fun and activities. The girls enjoyed games and treats on their first day back. As part of the Girls Brigade Ireland 125th Anniversary Celebrations all the girls and leaders are joining with other Girls Brigade companies for a trip to the Zoo on Saturday 13 th October. Everyone is looking forward to this activity and praying for fine weather. If you know of any girl who would like to join us in Castleknock Girls Brigade encourage them to come along to the parish centre on Saturday from 10 am (3 8 year olds) and on a Wednesday from 7 pm (9 years+) or contact Olive Good at Boys Brigade Hi Folks, We have a BB Open night 25th September. All welcome. Past leaders, parents, Anchors, Juniors and Company plus TY students that want to help. Come along for a great evening of fun. The Parent and Toddler Group meet in Castleknock Parish Centre on Friday mornings, from am to 12 noon. If you are interested in going along to this group, the parish office on cmcparishoffice@gmail.com Mothers Union We had a lovely evening at MU on Monday 3rd September: Jenny O'Connor was a brilliant speaker - thank you Jenny for sharing your internet knowledge and experience and giving us all food for thought. Chatty and Caroline Eager joined us and Chatty was presented with a certificate for 50 years membership. Shirley Smyth was given a 40 years membership certificate. Chatty and Shirley joined MU when communication in person was all important. I think we are in the same zone today as there is no substitute for the cuppa, chat and engaging with each other in a welcoming environment. Jessica Clarke is speaking on MU Overseas on Monday 1st October. Jessica lives in Wicklow so we hope to have a good audience to hear her speak and make her journey worthwhile. We will collect any suitable clothing you wish to bring for TRUST, Blanchardstown Women s' Refuge and also shoebox presents for Darndale Crèche. Looking forward to seeing you. 5 Holy Baptism On Sunday 9th September in St. Brigid s Church, Castleknock, Nathan Samuel Louis and William David Kielty were welcomed into our faith family. Our best wishes go to them, their godparents and family circle. Castleknock National School We are all back in Castleknock NS and looking forward to the year ahead! We extend a warm welcome to our new staff members and our new pupils. Our Junior Infants are settling in to routine and loving school! Sandra Moloney 5

6 Wednesday Club Outings Over the summer the Wednesday Club had a trip to Airfield Estate, Dundrum, where they had a tour of the house and gardens, and a trip to the Pearse Museum & St Enda's Park in Rathfarnham. Sunday Clubs The Sunday Clubs have recommenced, at a.m. in St. Mary s Church, Clonsilla, and at a.m. in St. Brigid s Church, Castleknock. All children of school age are welcome. Diocesan Synod Canon Paul, Pablo Espinoza Concha and Gladys Hutchinson photographed on Pablo s last Sunday in Ireland before he returned to Bilbao. The Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan Synod will take place on Tuesday 9th October in Templecarrig School, Greystones. The Synod Eucharist takes place in the school at 4.00 p.m. and the business of Synod gets underway directly afterwards at 5.00 p.m. The Book of Reports can be viewed and downloaded from the Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan website. Family make yourself at home Service The next Family make yourself at home service will take place on Saturday 13th October at 6pm if you can t make Sunday morning; why not call in on Saturday evening? This service will be a Service of Holy Communion. We would love to see you. 6

7 Greetings from Kitwe! Keith and Lyn Scott work for CMSI at our link missionary in Kitwe in the Diocese of Northern Zambia. They will be joining us on Advent Sunday, 2nd December, to talk about their work in Kitwe. This is their most recent link letter. As you all come to the end of a long, hot summer, we are in the middle of a dry, cooler winter. The temperatures will steadily rise now until the rains break the tension in November. Thankfully this year we will escape some of the heat by being on leave in Ireland and we shall be delighted to visit most of our link parishes around the North and South. We are especially encouraged to know that several new parishes have made recent commitments to support our ministry here. This shows us that God is guiding and directing us all in the equipping of His Church worldwide. The Anglican Church here in Zambia is under-funded, under-resourced and under pressure. We praise God that you are willing to support - through prayer, thoughts and giving - the training of a new generation of clergy, who will be well educated in both theology and integrity to be God s instruments for renewal in the Anglican Church here. We may only have a small number of students but there were only a small number of disciples at first. Thank you for your commitment to this challenge. We recently attended a meeting of the Kitwe area Missionary Fellowship at a remote location about an hour s drive from our home. These gatherings happen about three or four times a year and there are always different people at each event. They come from many different countries, denominations, ministries and mission agencies. We may have fundamental disagreements theologically but we have much in common to bring us together for worship, prayer and fellowship. These times are enriching, enjoyable and supportive. One can feel fairly isolated in one s own little setting, so it is a blessing to have fellowship with others of similar calling. This time, there was a team from Hands On, young people from Australia and North America. Some people have been in Zambia for decades in ministry serving poor and disadvantaged communities. One couple run an abandoned babies home in Garneton and are setting up another in Livingstone. Several present are in education like us. So, a very diverse group as always. We all have a great love for Zambians and a desire to serve them as God s instruments. Please remember Melissa from Hands On as she goes through the necessary lengthy procedures to adopt Rebecca, a nine-month-old abandoned baby. Indeed, pray for all the infants needing long term homes in Zambia. We had an exciting event earlier this year with the birth of Robert, grandson to Francis, our rector and his wife, Shelter. Their daughter, Florence is exactly the same age as Hannah, born on the same day, and we used to celebrate their birthdays together. She got married last year and now she is a mother in her own right. Everything is going well and we have seen plenty of the new arrival. There are several other families living on the Seminary site as well as next site, which belongs to TEEZ (Theological Education By Extension In Zambia). As the campus here is quiet and safe, the children all run around and play together. It s really lovely to hear them, and to meet all the new babies as they arrive. Right now there are three around us. Life at the Seminary progresses through this second semester leading to exams in November. We shall be leaving on the first of October so will not be present for the final weeks. As such we are really busy trying to pack in as much work and preparation with the students as we can. Keith is busy with Old Testament, Greek, Hermeneutics and Dogmatics. Lyn has three different tutorial groups for Academic Literacy. Apart from that we are on site and often on call for all sorts of other emergencies, including the occasional stint as ambulance driver. We are really looking forward to our break in Ireland, catching up with friends and family, especially with Adam and Hannah. I know, however, that after a few weeks we will be itching to return and carry on the work that we still feel that God has called us to do. 7
