3 Dear friends, Have you ever looked back at past generations and wondered why people seem to be so good at ignoring certain issues? Take, for example, the evil of slavery in the eighteenth century, children working long hours in the factories in the nineteenth century, racial discrimination and apartheid in the twentieth century, or even the plight of refugees in the twenty first century. What will future generations think of us in years to come? Will they assume, like we seem to, that the church will somehow keep going even though the majority of people do very little to support it? It may be that, in the not too distant future, we ourselves look back and wonder why we ignored what God was saying to us. But it may be too late then, when through lack of support, the temple has been destroyed. We can do something to prevent that though. We can work together to defend what we have and we can follow where God wants us to go. We can watch the signs and listen to the sounds about us, and then make informed decisions for our future. Look at the facts, look at the reality, and ask yourself what God wants us to do? Then don t ignore him. Its time to take a good hard look at ourselves and decide if we really do want to do better, or are we going to watch things crumble all around us. What kind of church do we really want? Well, what we need rather than want are committed disciples of the Lord, who are willing to hear what God is saying to us and follow that road he guides us along. We need people who will find their energy and enthusiasm in the encounter with the living God in word and sacrament. And we need people who believe in spreading the good news of Jesus by word and deed, not only in our own community, but throughout the world. That way the real treasure we store will be safe, secure, and everlasting. I pray that we will seek the direction of God and not ignore it. Martin 3
4 THE REGISTERS Holy Baptism Ardrossan: Logan Michael Elliott Collins 24/7/2016 Nina Catherine Wilson 21/8/2016 IRVINE FLOWER SHOW 2016 Competition was strong at this year s Marymass Flower Show. In spite of this Connie Mulcock won prizes for her two entries. She gained 1 st in an arrangement in the category Enchantment and 2 nd for her Vibrant Autumn entry. What a talent: are there more flower arrangers who could enter next year s Flower Show or more specialist growers who could present one bloom or vegetable? Linda Whitby also entered their garden (Michael does the hole digging if necessary!) in the category Best Irvine Garden and received 2 nd prize. Last year they gained 3 rd prize what will happen next year? There are many lovely gardens among our congregation how about entering next year! 4
5 HARVEST GIFT The North Ayrshire Regional Council met in Troon on Thursday 8 th September and we listened to Rev David Jasper talk about 'A Christian Response to Refugees'. He was a riveting speaker and inspired us all to think about refugees and to try to do something, however small, to help them. I used to work in Nigeria and I had noticed a tiny note in the Church Times newspaper in August saying that the Anglican Church in Nigeria was planning to open a clinic and trauma centre for victims of Boko Haram in Maiduguri the capital of Borno State in the far North East of the country. So I wrote an e mail to the Bishop and asked for more information. His reply came on the day we went to Troon. He said that he had been the Bishop of Maiduguri for 26 years and so he knows all about the suffering of the refugees due to the attacks by Boko Haram in the past 7 years. Hundreds of them are camped out in the Cathedral compound and the premises of other churches. In fact there are over 1 million Internally Displaced People taking refuge in Maiduguri city. Most of them are seriously traumatised as a result of bombings and a fear of further attacks. Many of the children have witnessed the tragic and violent killing of their parents. The trauma clinic and trauma centre is to provide both medical and psychological remedies to the community irrespective of their tribe or religion. When the members of the vestrys and congregations of the churches in Dalry, Irvine and Ardrossan heard of this project to help refugees it was decided to make our own small contribution by giving the retiring collection at the Joint Harvest service to this cause, and to continue to remember them as well as refugees in Europe and Scotland in our thoughts and prayers. 6 The Book Club I am delighted to say that Book Club is thriving! Thank you to the club for keeping going while I was in hospital. Two members deserve special thanks for hosting the club in their homes. Book club meets every four or five weeks and welcomes new members. We recently read and enjoyed, "All the Nice Girls," by Joan Bakewell and we are now reading "Jubilee," by Shelley Harris, which was read on Radio Four. Book Club brings people together and, whilst the book of the month is our focus, we also enjoy each others company. As I am not yet able to attend church, please do telephone if you would like to join the Book Club. Everyone is welcome from all our linked congregations. Yvonne Hannan (Tel ) Hello everyone, Just a note to say how much I appreciate the continuing support I am receiving following my accident. Your prayers and good wishes are sustaining me as are the visits I receive from many of you. Thank you to all of you who visit, bring shopping, take me to hospital appointments, cheer me up and update me on what is happening in church life. Progress is slow and I am very bored with the exercise regime I have to follow, but there is improvement and I can now cope with a the few steps in the house and can get outside to sit in the sun - on the rare occasions it shines! I don't know when I will be able to attend church again, but that is one of my aims. Best wishes to you all Yvonne 6

8 Diocesan Growth Strategy prayer Spirit of our Loving God, in your mercy and compassion inspire, encourage and empower us to live and work together as a Diocese, to allow your mission for us to take flesh through Jesus Christ our living and Eternal Lord. Amen. Part of our growth strategy at Ardrossan is to refurbish parts of the Hall that require attention so making them more accessible to the community. You may have already noticed the new windows in the kitchen, crèche room and toilet areas. And it is hoped that by the time you read this Magazine the new kitchen will have been finished. The year 3 MAP has been finalised and signed. For further information on the Growth Strategy see our website: IRVINE GROWTH STRATEGY PROJECTS Below are the projects the Irvine Congregation have decided to take forward in this year s Growth Strategy. Postcard size pictures of our Altar area with details of services on reverse for distribution to hotels, B&Bs etc, Church Notice Board estimate required and then a discussion on whether it might be vandalised, but certainly going ahead with getting a new pub sign the old sign is scarcely visible! The introduction of a midweek Service of the Word, once a month on a Thursday at 10.30am lead by our Worship Leaders. We will hold our usual St. Andrew s Night and also a Christingle Service. All Ideas and comments welcome. Linda. 12
