1 The CMC Times The magazine of the Church of Ireland Parishes of Castleknock and Mulhuddart with Clonsilla May 2017 Castleknock National School Parents Association The PA committee began their new term at the end of January. The role of the PA is to support Ms Moloney, the teachers and the Board of Management with their planned activities for the school, and to enhance and enrich the education of our children through fundraising and the provision of additional activities. We are 13 parents representing all the parents in the school. We had an exciting start to our year with Pancake Tuesday, and we finished our first term with an eggtravaganza of an Easter egg competition! We are now entering our busiest period with lots happening during May and June, including a movie night for our pupils; a disco for 3-6 th class; and school plays and a farewell to 6 th class to name a few of the upcoming activities. In this months issue: Our full range of services for the remainder of May and early June There are lots of photos from the Wednesday Clubs trip to Wells House, the Hospice Cycle Marathon, the Mothers Union AGM, the Bowls Club 50th Anniversary Celebration and news from the Castleknock National School P.A I hope you enjoy them! It s exam season, so there are some prayers and thoughts dotted around to encourage our young folk in their writing and thinking. Best of luck! We will also hold our big summer fundraiser, a BBQ in Luttrellstown Castle Golf and Country Club on the 23 June watch this space for more details! Calling all pets! Our annual Pet Service will take place on Sunday 18 June at 3.30pm in St. Thomas Church, Mulhuddart. 1
2 Extract from the Easter Vestry Address I thought at this year s Easter Vestries I would look at the historical background of the church of Ireland and it role today. The role of the select vestry and the Rector within the Parish. The Church of Ireland looks back to the early church, and to St. Patrick who brought the Gospel to this land St. Patrick in his writings constantly quotes from the Bible. He mentions baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation. We have a church on the site of Patrick s first church at Saul in Co. Down. Tradition says that Patrick was buried on the hill of Down, on 17 th March, 463. A large granite stone marks the spot beside the Cathedral at Downpatrick. In fact, we have churches at the ancient site like Armagh and St. Patricks and Christ Church in Dublin. The Reformation This year marks the 500 th anniversary of the reformation and Martin Luther s nailing of the 95 theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany; calling for reform. He saw the church was in need of reform, that authority came from the scriptures, Luther particularly attacked the system of indulgence which allowed people to buy pardon for their sins, this money went to build the Vatican. The reformation came to Ireland quite late in All the existing Bishops, except 2, agreed to the reforming of the church. Thus no new church was created at the reformation. Up to 1869 the Church of Ireland like the Church of England was an established part of the state. However, in 1870 the Church of Ireland was disestablished. Gladstone, the Prime Minister at the time, saw this as a matter of justice, as we were a minority church in relation to the R.C. and Presbyterian Church. Many people wondered whether the Church of Irelands would survive. No human power could save the Church. So it was said. It did so by the co-operation of clergy and laity. It was placed on a firm financial footing, with the representatives church body (R.C.B.) taking an overall view of this. Also it drew up a constitution which established a framework in which it works. In the constitution, it establishes that a select vestry would be elected to look after the affairs of the church in terms of finance, fabric and furnishings. That there could be church-wardens, and glebe wardens to look after property. I would like to thank the two select vestries of Castleknock and Mulhuddart, and Clonsilla for all their work over the past year, and look forward to working with the new vestries. This year, because of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, I hope to speak more in my sermons about this revolutionary event. At a meeting of the new select vestry, Meryl Foster was elected as the Hon. Secretary and Malcolm Cadoo as the Hon. Treasurer. True colours! A little while ago, some parishioners asked us what the liturgical colours mean and when do we change colours. A good question, so here are some answers: The church year begins on the first Sunday in Advent and ends on the feast of Christ the King. Through the year, the liturgical colours (of our stoles and hangings) change from purple, to while/gold, to red and eventually to green. I have set out a table below which will give you an indication of the changing church seasons. Purple is the colour of royalty to welcome the coming of a King. It also evokes pain and suffering. It is used for Advent and Lent to symbolize both the impending birth of Jesus and foreshadowing his death. White or Gold symbolize purity, holiness, and virtue, as well as respect and reverence. White or Gold is used for all high Holy Days and festival days of the Church Year, especially the seasons of Christmas and Easter, as well as for baptism, marriage, dedications, and the ordination of ministers. 4 Cont. 5 St. Mary s Clonsilla General Vestry General Easter Vestry Clonsilla: This was held in the Church on Sunday 2 April and the following were the results: Rector s Church warden Alex Alino Peoples Church warden Anne O Connor People s Glebe Warden Bob Tutty Lorna Beattie, Valerie Fildes, Gordon Hill, Liz Fleeton, Avril McCabe, Maurice Maxwell, Barbara Melbourne, Amaechi Okafor, Peace Okafor, Bernard Sheridan & Margaret Tutty. Parochial Nominator: Valerie Fildes Supplemental Parochial Nominator: Maurice Maxwell Diocesan Synods Representatives: Liz Fleeton & Margaret Tutty. Supplemental Diocesan Synods Representatives: Maurice Maxwell & Bernard Sheridan. Following the General Vestry, there was a meeting of the Select Vestry, Maurice Maxwell was elected as the new Hon. Secretary and Gordon Hill as the new Hon. Treasurer. Red is the colour of fire and so symbolizes the presence of God. It is the liturgical colour for Pentecost. It is considered the colour of the Church, since red can also symbolize the blood of martyrs. It is used for Maundy Thursday and during Holy Week. It is also used to commemorate special days for martyrs or saints. Green symbolizes the renewal of vegetation and generally of living things and the promise of new life. It is used for the Season of Epiphany between Transfiguration Sunday and the beginning of Lent, and for the time between Trinity Sunday (first Sunday after Pentecost) and the beginning of Advent. 6 Castleknock Bowls Club 50th Anniversary celebration Our end of season competitions were enjoyed over several weeks and the Doubles Final took place on 5 April. Canon Paul presented the trophies and prizes after which we relaxed and chatted at supper. The results were Top Score Ladies Winner Wendy O Rourke and in Joint 2nd Eileen Brown and Beatrice Richards. Top Score Gents Winner Gordon Hill and in 2nd place Sam McKeever. The Doubles Competition winners were Malcolm Cadoo and Eileen Brown and the Runners Up William Denner and Valerie Greene. Saturday 8 April we celebrated the end of season but also something much more significant 50 Years of Club Bowling. On the night it was a great pleasure to have some founding members with us and also some more recent past members. Our guests seemed very happy to reminisce and catch up with friends and look at photographs and Association Cup Competition Results bringing back memories no doubt of all the good times but maybe the odd disappointment too! Club Secretary, Valerie, read from the Minutes of the Inaugural Meeting held on 26 May 1967 and it was interesting to hear that the subscription for the season 1967/68 was fixed at 1. Our Club President, Canon Paul spoke about how much the Club has contributed to Parish life down through the years and he then made a presentation to Beatrice Richards for 50 years continual membership of the club. Play resumes, all being well, in September!! Valerie Greene Our Annual Parish Fun Day will take place on Saturday 16 September (2-5pm) in Castleknock Parish Centre. 6
