1 The Anglican Parish of Burnie We are a community of people who have come under the reign of Jesus Christ and begun to experience and express that reign, both in our life together and our witness in the world. OUR MISSION To know Christ and make him known TO KNOW CHRIST we long to become more and more like Jesus every day. The Bible says "Be holy, for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:15-16). While we know that we will never reach the level of perfection and holiness that Jesus Christ displayed while here on earth, we seek to increasingly become like him. In knowing Jesus, we are called to reflect him in all that we say and do. As people who know God s love for us in Jesus, we seek to proclaim this good news to others that is, we seek TO MAKE HIM KNOWN. OUR VISION We seek to: be a growing, multi- generational church community in which people are being transformed by the power of the Spirit and faithfully living out and proclaiming the gospel. be a visible, credible and compelling sign and foretaste of the kingdom of God across the North West region, from Wynyard to Penguin. express both contemporary and traditional forms of Christian worship. support and share in God s mission, both locally and globally. THE PARISH We are a Christ- centered, Bible- based church seeking to live in the power of the Spirit a community seeking to both be and make disciples of Jesus. We currently express our life together as God s people in three quite distinct congregations: 9:00am Sundays a classically Anglican service based on A Prayer Book for Australia, supplemented by other liturgical resources. Hymns are mostly from Together in Song and are accompanied by a pipe organ. Activities or teaching are provided for children. 10:30am Sundays (Connections) a multi- generational, family- friendly, contemporary service with the singing of modern Christian songs accompanied by a band. Children s ministry is provided. 10:30am Wednesdays a shorter midweek service based A Prayer Book for Australia. This diversity is a great strength of the parish, providing an environment in which the lives of a wide range of people can be nurtured and enriched as we seek to live as followers of Jesus. Our membership includes people from differing church backgrounds, as well as those who have come to faith with no real prior experience of church life. The parish seeks to live as a community of congregations, each in its own way committed to living out the new life we have in Jesus and seeking to share the gospel within the local community and beyond.

2 A LITTLE MORE ABOUT US 1. Prayer undergirds our ministries and is expressed in a range of ways in the lives of individuals and our small groups, through prayer chains and via , in gatherings prior to and during services, at a monthly prayer meeting and in personal ministry. 2. Gospel Proclamation takes place at many levels through our regular preaching and programs, at special events, as well as in courses and the conversations we have that bear witness to our faith in Jesus. 3. Ministry with Families, Children & Youth we currently have the following ministries: A very small number of children irregularly attend the 9:00am service and for whom we seek to provide some ministry and/or activity. Kids Learning Time (KLT) is part of the 10:30am Connections service with approximately 25 children participating. Mainly Music is held each Tuesday morning during school terms. Approximately 40 children and their carers (mostly mothers) attend these sessions. Messy Church is held several times a year, seeking a further connection with the families contacted through Mainly Music. A group of young people, aged 10 to 15 provides fellowship and teaching for some of the younger members of our parish and is beginning to draw in others. 4. Small Groups seven currently meet within the life of the parish. In addition to these, some of our members participate in other groups, including Know Your Bible (KYB) and Cursillo group reunion. 5. Bishop s Certificate in Theology & Ministry eight people are currently undertaking units in this program. We are currently seeking to offer three units each calendar year and increase the number of participants. 6. Pastoral Care & Fellowship take place through relationships with one another and in small groups. Our fellowship with one another is enhanced by morning teas and monthly lunches. Ladies breakfasts are held three to four times per year. Careful monitoring of attendance at services helps us identify and respond to members who may be experiencing health problems or other personal challenges. As appropriate, clergy make pastoral visits, including the celebration of Holy Communion for the housebound. Services in nursing homes are held monthly at Umina Park and as required at Yaraandoo. 7. The Ministry of Women the parish affirms and values the richness and diversity that women bring to ministry. Among us are an ordained honorary assistant minister and a number of women lay ministers with authority to preach.

3 8. Missions the parish is currently connected with the following wider missionary work of the Church: Church Missionary Society (CMS) link missionaries Tim & Emma in South East Asia. World Evangelisation Crusade (WEC) Georgina Stott (originally from this parish) now working with Far East Broadcasting (FEBC) in Thailand. Australian Mercy support for projects and the ministry of their Australian director David Skeat, who is a member of the parish and works from an office in our parish complex. Mission to Seafarers members of our parish volunteer as workers at the Seafarers Centre in the Port of Burnie. North West Regional Hospital Chaplaincy our Rector serves as Chairman of Burnie Community Care who oversee this ministry and one of our parishioners is a member of the current chaplaincy team. Parish of Circular Head financial and prayer support for the revitalisation of their ministry and mission. Australian Board of Mission (ABM) partnering with the Anglican Church in northern Australia and overseas. Bush Church Aid (BCA) supporting ministries in rural and remote parts of Australia. In addition, financial support is given for the Christmas Bowl, City Mission s community lunch on Christmas Day and in kind support is provided for Anglicare ministries in the area. 9. Administration, Finance & Property are overseen by the Parish Council, under the leadership of the Rector, church wardens and treasurer. Most of congregational life and ministry is overseen by the enabling teams that function as sub- committees of Parish Council. ABOUT THE AREA Burnie is a great place to live! The parish is located in the heart of North West Tasmania. The City of Burnie has a population of approximately 19,000; the parish also covers a further 3,000+ people living the Somerset urban area of the adjoining Waratah- Wynyard local government area. Education is provided by a range of public and private schools, together with campuses of TAFE and the University of Tasmania. Burnie is home to the North West Regional and North West Private hospitals. Both Cradle Mountain and the Tarkine Wilderness are readily accessible from Burnie.

4 ASSISTANT MINISTER This is a full- time position for a person who is or is about to be ordained within the Anglican Church. The person appointed will have the following broad areas of responsibility: To work with the Rector in overseeing the congregations in the parish. To actively participate in the overall life of the Parish. The Assistant Minister shall be expected to: 1. Nurture his/her life with God with special attention to prayer, worship and the study of the Scriptures. 2. Live a Christlike life. 3. Be in fundamental agreement with the teachings and practices of the Anglican Church. 4. Maintain a healthy balance between work and personal and family life. 5. Pray for and with members of the parish. 6. Meet regularly with the Rector for supervision and coaching. 7. Take one regular day off each week. 8. Take four weeks annual leave plus public holidays (or time in lieu) 9. Participate in approved professional development activities. POSITION DESCRIPTION The person appointed as Assistant Minister shall have the following responsibilities: Leadership & Equipping 1. To work with the Rector in equipping others for ministry, with a view to: enabling them to recognise their gifts; developing ministry teams & facilitating the sharing of ministry. 2. Encouraging and mentoring ministry leaders. 3. Working with the Rector, Parish Council and others to provide leadership, develop vision and implement our Mission Action Plan. Family, Children s & Youth Ministry 4. To give leadership and be actively involved in the development of ministry to young families, children and youth in the parish and wider community. Teaching & Worship 5. To lead and preach approximately two Sundays each month at Connections. 6. To lead and preach approximately two Sundays each month at the 9:00am service. 7. To lead the Wednesday morning service up to twice a month. 8. To assist in the delivery of Certificate in Theology and Ministry program organized by the Diocese in conjunction with Ridley College in Melbourne. 9. To attend, lead and resource fellowship and study groups throughout the parish on a schedule determined with the Rector.

5 Outreach 10. To help keep the parish focussed on the need to share the Christian message with others. 11. To assist in the development of discipleship and missional communities within the life of the parish. Pastoral Care 12. Provide short- term ministry to parishioners in need, and where their issues are ongoing direct them to appropriate external service providers. 13. Oversee the preparation, conduct and follow- up of baptisms, confirmations, admissions to Holy Communion, weddings or funerals in which he/she is involved. 14. Take services at nursing homes and in private homes, as requested by the Rector. 15. Be available on call to those seeking the ministry of an ordained clergyperson. Meetings 16. Attend weekly staff meetings, Enabling Team meetings and Parish Council. Beyond the Parish 17. To work with others in representing the parish to the wider community. 18. To participate in interdenominational activities. 19. To attend Synod & Clergy Conference. 20. To participate in any committees of the Diocese to which elected or appointed (subject to the approval of the Rector). TERMS OF APPOINTMENT The appointment shall be for an initial period of two years, with the possibility of extension. Remuneration shall be in accordance with conditions determined by the Diocese of Tasmania: An increase of approximately 3.5% to stipend levels has been approved from July The parish will provide suitable housing or provide an accommodation benefit. Appointment will be subject to the applicant fulfilling the Safe Church Communities requirements of the Diocese of Tasmania, including having a Tasmanian Working Vulnerable People card. Review An initial review will be conducted after four months and annually thereafter.
