1 The CMC Times The magazine of the Church of Ireland Parishes of Castleknock and Mulhuddart with Clonsilla. October 2016 What a lovely time we all had at the Parish Fun Day on 10 th September. I m told by those who can actually count that we had over 300 people here on that sunny afternoon. Everyone enjoyed the choo choo train inflatable, the magician, the face painting and the food. Most of all it was the time that we all spent together as a community. It was great! Days like this never happen without hard planning and work. There are lots of people to thank on your behalf: the committee (Jemma, Jen, Bernard, Joanna, Hal, Alan & Julia), Meryl for organising the pet show and prizes and In this month s CMC Times we have articles from our resident vet, a catch-up from St Mary s Church on all that has been done to make it the beauty that it is and a Kids Korner with a special harvest theme. Enjoy and God Bless. Eugene Ann for adjudicating, Liz for the honesty book stall, the Mother s Union for hosting Mrs Buchanan s Tea Rooms providing us with sustenance, Canon Paul and Sandra for serving up plenty of hot dogs, William the garden elf, everyone who supervised the games and the leaders of the BB, GB,& Brownies manned the stalls. Roll on next year!

2 Harvest Home Alleluia In September or October most Churches will celebrate the Harvest. There s a verse or two in one of the lesser known Old Testament prophets which we should think about at harvest festival, the prophet Habakkuk wrote: - Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will have joy in the God of my salvation. Here Habakkuk reminds us that if you only thank God for harvest when things are going well, you ll be in trouble. Your faith will be a kind of cupboard love if you only thank God when the cupboard is full, you will be bowled over when it is empty. We all need to discover a faith for when the cupboard is bare. This particular harvest I think of a country I have been reading about Haiti. Florida is a place of great wealth: not least, of holiday homes for the rich. Haiti is an island less than 300 miles off Florida, of its 10 million people, one in five cannot read and write; only 4 out of 10 have drinking water. 1 in 5 children never reach the age of 5. Some 40,000 live on the streets, lacking any shelter. Harvest Home in Florida and Harvest Home in Haiti are so near and yet so far. They are worlds apart. Christians at harvest thanksgiving cannot be content to leave things like this. Just as joy and sorrow are part of life s harvest, so too are justice and injustice. When we come as thankful people to harvest, we are challenged to bring joy to others and to do what we can to bring justice to them. Some people think harvest thanksgiving is simply a time for rejoicing. I have always found it also a very challenging and demanding festival. Yours sincerely Canon Paul Make us worthy, O Lord, to serve the men and women throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger. Give them, through our hands, this day their daily bread, and by our Parish contacts: Rector: Canon Paul Houston Curate: Rev. Kenneth Lindsay of the Blanchardstown Methodist Church. Thank you to those who prepared the church and came along to celebrate with us. We now say goodbye to the summer schedule of weekly service s in this special church and resume our Autumn / Winter schedule of Late Evening office by candlelight at 8pm every 3rd Sunday Only Kiddin If any parishioners are unwell or due to go into hospital, please let us know so we can visit. You will find contact details for other parish groups on the website i.e. Bowls Club, Girls Brigade, Boys Brigade, Sunday Clubs and choir, Wednesday Club, Mother s Union, Castleknock Choir... A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good Samaritan. She asked the class If you saw a person lying on the roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do? A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence and said I think I d throw up. 2

3 Mad about pets! One of our parishioners is a man named Syd Nagle and as he is a vet, I asked him to write a little piece about pet care. Over the coming months, we will have a series of articles written by parishioners on topics that you might find interesting and Informative. IT S CUTER TO NEUTER Neutering is the umbrella term that refers to the surgical procedure used to prevent pets from reproducing. Both males and females can be neutered. Why should I have my pet neutered? Neutering should always be considered when you are keeping your animals, solely as pets. Service dogs, e.g Guide Dogs for the Blind, Hearing Dogs for deaf people and Dogs for the Disabled are all routinely neutered. What are the advantages? It is known that females spayed at the correct time of time (depending on breed), risk less chance of developing breast tumours later in life. Heat/seasons no longer occur, therefore the female dog is not attractive to males dogs at certain times of the year. Spaying also prevents a common uterine infection called pyometra, which can occur in middle aged bitches. In males dogs, testicular neoplasia (cancer) is the second most common tumour in the male dog. As well as preventing this, neutering also prevents prostatic disease. Neutering cats Most female cats will come in to heat and start to call at approximately 5 months of age depending on the time of year. They can also give birth to approx 2-3 litters during peak breeding season. Neutering prevents unwanted kittens, and also they are at less risk from Feline AIDS and Feline Leukaemia. Unneutered male cats are responsible for fathering numerous litters of kittens. They start to spray and have a tendency to roam far afield. They also are involved in fighting, which can result in wounds and abscesses. Again, these cats are at risk for fatal feline diseases. Contact your local Vet for further information. 6 News from St. Mary s Clonsilla Sometimes things change bit by bit and we hardly notice. Life is like that but do we ever notice the little (and sometimes big) things that are looked after in our churches to make them safe for us and for future generations? So I asked Gordon Hill (Treasurer) and Maurice Maxwell (Secretary) to list out some of the things that have been done over the past few months in St. Mary s and they include: Gates installed at both ends at the back of the Parish Centre, suspected woodworm in the pulpit has been dealt with and the pulpit re-varnished, repairs have been made to the organ, gutters cleaned and a patch of damp and associated mould on the interior of the South wall has been examined by an engineer who has identified the source and recommended that some re-pointing of the exterior wall is required. This work will have to be carried out by a specialist company as the Church is a Protected structure. In relation to the grounds, some works have also taken place: laying of stone on some of the pathways in the cemetery, courtesy of a family of Parishioners and provision of stone within and around the Columbarium area. A decision has been taken by the Vestry to allow kerbing to be placed around graves. Families wishing to add such kerbing should contact the Parish Office in Castleknock in the first instance, as permission is required to do so. A number of complaints have been received about items being removed from graves in recent weeks. Due to the lack of parking in the vicinity of the grounds, the entrance gates are left open to allow families visit graves at their convenience. Families are therefore advised not to place items of financial value on graves. Our sincere thanks to the mystery person who has repaired the timbers and re-planted the area at the base of the lights it is a delight to see. The Wednesday Club have organised an evening to the opening night of the R&R production of Fiddler on the Roof at the National Concert Hall on 8th November. The cost is 37 including return coach transfer from St Brigid's Church, Castleknock departing 6.45pm sharp. If you are interested, please let Bernard Neary (Castleknock) or Valerie Fildes (Clonsilla) know and it is open to all parishioners. Payment secures your seats. Also on December 14th a Christmas lunch is being planned, further details will be confirmed soon. 7 Kids Korner 2 Sophie's Harvest Sophie discovers the message of giving at the heart of Harvest It was late September and Sophie and Helen were staying with their Grandma and Grandpa who lived by the seaside. It was a lovely sunny day and Helen had gone shopping with Grandma, but Sophie had decided she would stay and help Grandpa in his garden. 'I've had a good harvest of runner beans this year,' said Grandpa, 'would you like to pick some for our dinner tonight, Sophie?' Grandpa showed Sophie how to pick them by holding them with one hand and pinching the little stem away from the main stalk with the other hand. She soon had enough for their dinner in her basket. 'It's going to be Harvest Festival in our church this weekend, so you and Helen can both make up a nice basket of vegetables, fruit and flowers from the garden to take along to the church,' said Grandpa, as he and Sophie sat in the sun enjoying a glass of lemonade. 'So what exactly is Harvest Festival?' asked Sophie. 'I know it's all about taking fruit and things that you've grown to church, and that they give the stuff to old people afterwards. But what if you haven't got a garden to grow things in, and you haven't got much money to buy anything, what then?' asked Sophie. 'Well, the whole idea of Harvest Festival is about thanking God for everything that he gives us and giving something back to him, that can give happiness to other people,' explained Grandpa. 'In the olden days, especially in the country, most people grew things to eat to live, so that's what they gave, because they were giving thanks for a good harvest. But I suppose it doesn't have to be things you have grown, it could be anything. Let's think about your Dad, he's a painter and decorator, so what could he give?' Sophie giggled: 'It would look a bit strange to take a pot of paint to church wouldn't it?' 'Not if the church needed some decorating, or there were some old people in the church who needed some. If your Dad was willing he could give his time free to do a job for someone,' said Grandpa. 'I think I get the idea now,' said Sophie. 'Mum's good with computers, so she could offer to do letters and things. Grandma's good at cooking, so she could make some cakes. But what about Helen and me? What could we give? We're not good at anything yet.' Grandpa smiled. 'God doesn't only want things because they're perfect, we all have gifts that he has given us, things that we enjoy doing, like those pictures that you made out of the sea shells you collected from the beach, think how pretty they would look on the walls of the church.' Just then Grandma and Helen came round the corner of the house, carrying lots of bags of shopping. 'Tesco was so busy, we're worn out,' said Grandma. 'I could do with a nice cup of tea.' 'I'll go and make you one,' said Sophie. 'Would you like some lemonade, Helen? I'm starting my Harvest Festival early ask Grandpa, he'll explain what I'm talking about.' 'So what is Sophie on about?' asked Helen. Grandpa explained that they had been talking about giving things for harvest and they had decided that God wanted people to say thank you to him by giving to others anything that would be helpful or make them happy. He told them all about the things that he and Sophie had already thought about. 'I could give my paintings of fish and crabs and things, couldn't I?' said Helen. 'That would be a very good idea,' said Grandma, 'because that would remind people to say thank you for the harvests of the sea, and to remember the fishermen who go out in all kinds of weather to catch it for us.' Sophie came out carrying the tea and the lemonade. 'Well, what do you think about our harvest ideas then?' she asked. 'I think you've brought Harvest Festival right up to date, laughed Grandma. 'I'd better go and warn the church that they might be getting some rather different harvest gifts this year!' School s Back! Castleknock National School: We are all back at school and the new school year is well underway. We welcomed 29 new Junior Infants to the school and we hope they will be very happy with us. Over the summer our 'Green Team' planted up our new raised beds in the school garden. These plants will create a sensory garden and a little quiet area to enjoy in our busy playground... Our new 'Buddy Bench' bought by the parents and pupils from last year's Sixth Class is due to arrive next week. Watch for photos in the coming months! Sandra Moloney, Principal. 7

8 A thought for the month ahead Eugene & Joanna I love the way kids and schools are so creative! When I called into CNS last week, I noticed all these words up on the wall at the entrance to the school. It struck me that sometimes we think that all teaching is going one way when in fact, our young folk can teach us a thing or two in turn. I just thought I d share this with you and maybe we can all ponder over the words in the next few weeks. With God s help we too can be bold, happy, kind, dedicated Eugene We hope you enjoy our 2nd edition of The CMC Times and the new stories added this month. As some of you may know, there has been an addition to the Griffin household Jessie, our little B&W Collie cross adopted from Dog s Trust so be kind to Eugene when you see him out and about looking tired (but very happy!)
