1 ST. MAELRUAIN S CHURCH OF IRELAND TALLAGHT
2 A word from William φγφγφγφγφγφγφγφγφγφγφγ On Ash f Wednesday we began our Lenten series of Jesus I am statements the first being I am the light of the world. John 1: 1 9 and continued through Lent on our Wednesday evening compline services with I am the good shepherd John 10: 1 18, I am the way and the truth John 14: 1 4, I am the resurrection and the life John 11: and I am the vine John 15: We used visual aids and I hope the services were and will be a time of quiet and reflection. We are looking forward to Holy Week with services nightly at 8pm with Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday. As we don t as yet have a Women s World Day of Prayer committee in Tallaght representing the 12 R.C. Parishes, ourselves, the Methodists and others so we widened the net and approached St. Martin de Porres in Aylesbury to hold the service which they willingly did. It was a lovely service and St. Maelruain s was well represented by our ladies three of whom did readings. Each year the women of a country chose the theme and this year it was the Lebanon. The curate in St. Martin s plays the guitar and many thought his playing added to the atmosphere of reflection and meditation. The service was followed by the mandatory cup of tea and despite it being Lent, tempting home baking. for the generous use of a trailer for the float. For the second year in a row I was asked to take a Lenten bible study in the Sacred Heart Church, Killinarden. We looked at Jesus clearing out the traders from the outer or gentile court of the temple and consequently what are the modern day obstacles that we in the Church put in the way of people outside the church. The Easter General Vestry will take place on Wednesday 30 th April in the small hall. This is the A.G.M. of the parish when the financial accounts are presented. We also elect the Vestry or committee on the same evening. It is important that people come along and hear how their parish is doing and vote for whom they wish to run the parish on their behalf for the coming year. We in the Church of Ireland are fortunate to have the opportunity for democratic lay involvement, so come along and show your interest. Happy Easter! God Bless William. On St. Patrick s day I had the honour of being asked to be Grand Marshall of the parade here in Tallaght. We have been putting in a float for the last number of years with some other local churches. In previous years I had the task of pulling the float due to the fact that I am the only person involved with a tow bar on my car. This has the added benefit of me staying dry during the parade which over the last few years have tended to be, shall we say, a bit on the damp side, but not so this year as I lead the parade in glorious sunshine. The theme of this year s parade was The Special Olympics and our own float s theme was The Race of Life (Hebrews 12: 1 2). We were delighted to win the prize for best traditional float for the second year in a row. Thank you to Mr. Sam Cole of

4 M other s Union Boys Brigade It s hard to believe we are into the last few weeks of this session. Our display will take place on Saturday April 26 th. The members are working hard to put together an interesting programme and hope that all their families and friends will come along to the parish centre and see a small part of what happens at B.B. on Friday nights. The Bible exam has taken place and we would like to thank the Rector for working with the boys throughout the session. The members of Company Section have been offered a camp in Wales during June. The camp offers an action packed few days under canvas at a cost of Euro 160 for each boy. Anyone wishing to travel should give their name to the Captain A.S.A.P. Stroller It is sad that we haven t managed to recover from the last two years. Foot and mouth disease and last year s bad weather played havoc with our plans. This year we don t have enough people to make a walking group. Our walking fraternity are still keeping contact though, and some still walk locally, but if there is anyone in the parish interested in organising a parish walking group on more adventurous walks please get in touch with Barbara Table Tennis The senior club continues to run on Thursdays at 8pm in the Parish Centre. W e would like to welcome Paul who has joined us this year and hope he is enjoying Thursday nights. The Rector has joined us for one or two games recently and I can disclose that he can play a fairly mean game of table tennis too! The club would welcome anybody who could like to play a casual game of table tennis followed by a cuppa and a chat there is plenty of room for now members. Congratulations to the large number of M.U. ladies and friends who braved the blustery and wet morning on Saturday 8 th March to arrive at the Visitors Centre in the Phoenix Park by 10am. In the Visitors Centre we were able to view a large display of photographs taken of each of our Presidents when either visiting abroad or receiving and entertaining guests from home and abroad at Aras An Uachterain. A lso on display were gifts presented to President McEleese by the Lone Parent Centre in our very own Tallaght on her visit there. W e were then taken by two mini coaches to Aras An Uachterain where we had a very informative conducted tour of the state rooms. W e were encourage to walk on the newly installed magnificent Donegal carpets despite our wet foot wear no plastic cover on carpets there, proof of their durability! W e also admired the W aterford chandeliers as well as the beautiful Italian M arble fireplace. U nfortunately due to the inclement weather we were unable to view the gardens a good enough excuse for another visit in the summer or Christmas time too is lovely there as our guide advised. O n our return to the Visitors Centre coffee room we all enjoyed a friendly get together over coffee and delicious scones or cake before leaving the seclusion of the Aras. Badminton Club Another month gone! This month we were delighted to welcome Alison who joined us towards the beginning of March. Babysitter permitting, we hope Alison will continue to enjoy a few games of badminton, a cup of tea and a chat with us on a Monday night. Although numbers have dropped a little since Christmas we still have a good core of regulars who can put together some good games which are not only enjoyable to be part of but also entertaining to watch. We still also meet on a Saturday when our juniors are joined by the not so juniors for a couple hours play. Because members are small the more energetic among us often play a few games of singles which would have been unheard of in badminton clubs years ago. The Junior club will continue to run until Easter and then take a break until September. So if you haven t made it down this year there are just a few weeks left to go and after that put it in your diary for September. Whist: The next Whist Drive will take place on Mon 28 8pm in the small Hall: All welcome.
5 School News All the work that was carried out during the half term break was very successful. The carpets look great, as do the new sink units. At last we can see the signs of spring around her, the crocuses and daffodils are up and the trees are coming into bud. Time to get planting again! Thank you to everyone who has been sending in the Tesco Tokens, we haven t got a tally yet, but seem to be doing quite well. Keep sending them in please.. It has been great to have Deborah Kinsella with us for the past two weeks, on work experience. Debbie, of course is a former pupil of the school. She seems to have enjoyed her time with us. News flash! Congratulations to the bowling team for reaching the final of the M cilwaine Cup which will take place on Thursday 3 rd April W ELL DONE and good luck! Flower List April: George M ckim and Iris Harley May: Alison Kinealy, Barbara Barrett and Evelyn O Byrne The School Com pletion Programme is almost up-and running at this stage. W e only got the go ahead from the Department of Education and Science a couple to weeks ago. M s. Edwina Cahill has accepted the position and we are looking forward to working with her shortly. There will be lots of new programmes going on in school, we ll fill you in when they re up and running. Ms. Gillian Perdue, a former member of staff, has a second novel in print at the moment, Conor s Cowboy Suit. Gill is going to come to the school during our Book Fair to read to the children and she has something else up her sleeve, but that s a surprise for the day. Gill s book will be available at the Fair. The children from 5 th and 6 th are doing a project on Trees at the moment so we plan to get out and about in the area identifying trees! Congratulations to M s. W endy Hanbridge who is expecting her third baby in April. W e re delighted to welcome M s. Edel M cglynn who will be substituting for her. W endy will be back in October.
