2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, From its earliest days, the Church has been mindful of the universal nature of her existence, meaning that as a good mother, the Church has wanted to help propagate the message of Jesus in mission lands. Even at the Council of Jerusalem, it was noted that Christians should assist new communities to flourish through financial assistance. Such is the case today. We welcome Father Genghan Mbinkar from Kumbo in the Diocese of Cameroon who will speak with our parish about the work of his diocese to build up the Church and spread the Gospel message. Father is sent to us by the diocesan office and as part of our annual collection for the missionary cooperative appeal to assist them in their work and to give them opportunities to share the faith. I know you will be generous, as you always are, toward helping the Church to grow in foreign lands and here in our own country. Since Father will be celebrating all of the Masses and speaking this weekend, I ll have a chance to visit with a long-time friend of mine who is the priest chaplain for the VA hospital in New York. I ve known Father Conway for the better part of thirty years and lived with him when we were seminarians and visited with him when he was in Bolivia. He s a remarkable man and an incredible chaplain for our veterans and their families. He was an amazing pastor in a tough parish in Harlem, NY, and the people loved him beyond measure. But following his heart, he was brought to hospital chaplaincy and has blossomed in that role. I want to say that he s now been in that ministry for about ten years, and every time we talk, he seems more and more enthused. I admit that I really am blessed to have him as a friend, and am looking forward to this visit to reminisce, to share our present ministries, and, quite frankly, just to catch up on family, friends, and community. So, although I ll be gone for the weekend Masses, I will be back for Mass the first thing on Monday morning! This week, we ll also celebrate the Fourth of July and the First Friday of July. We will have morning adoration on the Fourth of July from 5:30 until 8:15 as usual, but there will not be adoration or Benediction in the afternoon and evening. Enjoy the holiday and please be safe! Friday is also First Friday, so the Masses will be celebrated in the morning and in the evening as usual with adoration continuing until midnight. Please remember that we always need adorers to cover those hours of adoration, so even if you haven t signed up, please make the sacrifice and stop in between 7:30 and midnight for a few minutes with the Lord. We are going to have a little change in schedule this summer. While Wednesday adoration will continue in the morning and afternoon/evening as usual, I do have to remind you that the Blessed Sacrament may never be left unattended during exposition. We re trying to be mindful that there are more opportunities to do things during the summer and that vacations and travel plans may interrupt your usual adoration times, but we cannot leave the Blessed Sacrament alone. If, by chance, there are no adorers for a particular time (whether on Wednesday mornings or afternoons) or on First Friday, we will need to consider a change in schedule. Also, there will not be Vespers in July or August. We will have simple reposition at 7:00 p.m. because we noticed a drop in people who are attending Vespers, not only during the summer, but a decrease during the year. We will continue as long as we can, but if we want to continue with the schedule as is, we have to have the ongoing participation of the community. In a few weeks, you ll hear about our adult faith formation programs for the next academic year. I already know that we will do a Bible Study on Saint Paul s Letter to the Philippians, and there are two contenders for the spring. I just haven t decided which one will be the better for our study. I m also planning a mini-session to reflect together on the life of Saint Catherine of Siena. After all, in our Jubilee Year, we could all benefit to read a little more about her. Finally, we re looking forward to the re-inauguration of the church tours during Jubilee Week which will begin in the fall. It looks like a good summer coming our way and lots of opportunities in the fall to begin our Great Jubilee! Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

Thank you for your help in keeping our budget in check. If every contributor was able to help with even $2.00 extra, we d be fine. We know that we will need to make some changes in staffing in the near future, but it is to allow us to maintain our programs and services as you deserve. We don t think you ll need instructions, but we ll give them to you anyway, and you can help us get ahead of ourselves with some of the Bazaar and Penny Sale tasks. THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 4 SAINT KATHRYN RELIGIOUS GOODS Do you know how blessed we are with the loyalty of our customers? One customer reaffirmed the mission of the store as a parish ministry by telling us that she drives from out of town to come, browse, and buy from our book selection. She also noted that she doesn t even consider buying anything online that she knows we carry in our store. She called it her donation to helping us to continue doing what we do. Support for almost any local business has to include this type of donation mentality. That s what builds local community. Every volunteer who is in any way involved with the store understands what we do but sometimes we need to discern why we do it. One of our basic reasons for the why of it is because we all know and feel the power of the Catholic faith to change lives. It may not be the only why, but it s certainly an important one. This customer could not have made a more telling compliment that ties in with the why of our ministry. It s always interesting and unique when a customer lets us know we re on the right track and making a difference for someone. We will continue to do our best to spread the Faith to all who enter through our door. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Early registration for the academic year for religious education classes has ended and we are now in the first phase of late registration. Children already enrolled in the program received the registration forms at religious ed class. Forms are also available in the back of the church and in the office. Schedules are attached to the registration form. Please, detach the schedule and keep for your records. The full schedule will also be posted on the parish website. Grades 1-6, the opportunity for choosing a Group has passed as our classes are now filling up; students will be assigned to Group 1 or Group 2. Registration fees between June 1 and August 1 are $45.00/$90.00 per family. Registration after August 1 will be $50.00/$ per family. JUBILEE T-SHIRTS By popular demand, T-shirts with our Jubilee logo will continue to be available for order in the parish office through the summer. Screen-printed women s T-shirts are $12, men s are $10, and polo shirts with an embroidered logo are $25. T-shirts are white; polo shirts may be ordered in Kelly green, red, or royal blue. Proceeds will go towards Jubilee-related events.

5 JULY 1, 2018 HOSPITALITY MINISTRY Do you have a knack for making others feel at home? Are you eager to find a way to become more involved in the life of the parish? Our Hospitality Ministry may be just the right fit! We are in need of more greeters to be the welcoming face to all parishioner and visitors to Saint Kathryn s at our weekend Masses. We have a particular need for at least one more greeter for the 8:30 a.m. Sunday Mass, but we could also use more help for the 10:30 a.m., and 6:30 p.m. Masses as well. If you are interested or for additional information, please contact Nancy Phaneuf at NAPhaneuf182@hotmail.com. BAZAAR SPONSORSHIP COORDINATOR NEEDED This year not only marks our 50 th jubilee as a parish, but also our 25 th Annual Christmas Bazaar and Penny Sale! Are you eager to help us make this year s the biggest and most successful bazaar in Saint Kathryn history? If you are a people person with excellent communication skills who would enjoy being our ambassador to local businesses, then please contact Charlene at to discuss the possibility of joining our bazaar volunteer team as our sponsorship coordinator. This would entail going to local businesses and inviting them to sponsor our bazaar and receive from us a promotional package on bazaar weekend that would include being part of the centerfold of our bulletins, being advertised on placemats in the dining area, having their logos displayed on posters in the hall and on the property, etc. They donate to us to give our bazaar a boost, and we promote them abundantly a win-win! VOCATION ROSARY Who do we have in formation from the parish? Well, we have Sister Athanasius Munroe, OP (Sarah); Sister Faustina Kolbe Burda, DMN (Jennifer); and Sister Maria Mechtilde Ainley, OSB (Elena). This is a great gift to and from our parish, but we have no one in formation for the priesthood or diaconate. Come on, fellas! The Lord is calling some of you why not begin to discern? For years, we have had parishioners volunteer to pray the rosary for vocations. Would you be willing to take the Vocation Rosary home for a week and pray for the men and women from our parish in formation and for an increase of vocations? If so, please contact Deacon Ray at QUO VADIS DAYS Quo Vadis Days are opportunities for young men considering a call to the priesthood to interact with seminarians and priests as well as other young men who are thinking about priesthood to come together for fun, food, and fellowship. This year, they will take place from Monday, August 6, beginning at 5:00 p.m. and concluding on Friday, August 10 at 1:00p.m. at Northeast Catholic College, 511 Kearsarge Mountain Road, Warner, NH. If you are a young man age 14-18, you are invited to attend the annual Quo Vadis Days camp to spend time with other young men your age looking at the Lord s call in your life. Quo Vadis Days are led by priests and seminarians of the diocese and includes a full schedule: sports, games, hiking, swimming, daily Mass, prayer, and opportunities to grow in friendship with the Lord and with each other. For more information and to register, please visit liveinblackandwhite.com or contact the vocations Director, Father Matthew Mason, at or mmason@rcbm.org. SONJA CORBITT COMING TO SAINT KATHRYN S Have you heard that, in collaboration with the Daughters of Eve, The Bible Study Evangelista, Sonja Corbitt will be coming to Saint Kathryn s? Join us for an evening of reflection on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. for a Love the Word Kick-off event with adoration, Evening Prayer, Music, and Confessions. On Saturday, September 22, Sonja will offer a retreat day consisting of three talks with reflection time from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. More information is found on the flyers in the back of the church. CHAMPAGNE BRUNCH HOSTS WANTED Our second Jubilee Champagne Brunch took place last weekend. Thanks to the Jubilee Social Task Group and the Men of Saint Joseph, it was another wonderful time of fellowship, delicious food, and laughs. Would your ministry like to host the next brunch in the fall? If interested, please contact Charlene or Jen in the office at

6 THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUMMER FOOD DRIVE Our summer food drive for the Food Pantry at Saint John s will begin on the weekend of July 8 and conclude on July 29. Bags will be available in the vestibule of the church with a shopping list. Please return the filled bags to the vestibule and we can take care of the rest. Summer can be a particularly difficult time, especially for children who usually have breakfast and lunch in school, so your help is very much needed to help our children stay fed and healthy. Thank you for your constant generosity to our biannual food drives. You help more than you know! FAITH FACTS Among the many beautiful faith reminders in our church are the stained glass windows. Taken from Saint Peter s Church in New Haven, CT upon its closure, these beautiful windows depict scenes from the life of Christ, the miracles of Saint Peter, three Marian apparitions (Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Pompei, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel), the Immaculate Conception, the Betrothal of Mary and Joseph, and, of course, the beautiful crucifixion window. As you take a look at our windows, please say a prayer for the people of Saint Peter s and give thanks to God that their legacy of faith continues in our church! VOCATION ROSARY We continue to pray for the women and men of our parish in formation for the consecrated life, and continually ask our good God to move the hearts of many of our young people to consider a vocation to the priesthood, diaconate or religious life. Thank you to those who will accept the Vocation Rosary in May: July 1: Jim Moran July 8: Betty Gautieri July 15: Ed Gleason July 22: Diana Beaudin July 29: The Dragas Family For more information or to arrange to receive the Rosary for one week, please contact Deacon Ray at , ext FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERS The Food Pantry is in desperate need of volunteers who would be able to help pick up food at the Food Bank in Manchester. If you are able to help with runs to the Food Bank on Tuesdays, please contact Janet Flores at Thank you! 6 UPDATE ON THE FAMILY IN NEED: TWO GIRLS AND A SURPRISE BOY! The local refugee family expecting triplet daughters was surprised again! The mother did not deliver three girls, she delivered two girls and a boy! Thank you for all of your donations for this family over the past few weeks. From various sources, they have received a triplet stroller, car seats, infant girl clothing, and some diapers. Several parishioners have asked if there is anything else the family needs. With this latest surprise, the obvious thing is: infant boy clothing! Their son may be wearing pink for a while The family can also use more newborn diapers, size 3 diapers, size 6 diapers, underwear and socks for a 7-year-old girl, and size 5T girl clothing. If you are able to help, please call the parish office at MISSIONARY COOP APPEAL This weekend, we welcome our missionary coop speaker to Saint Kathryn s. Father Ghenghan Mbinkar from Kumbo in the Diocese of Cameroon is with us to make his appeal for our financial and prayerful support. Please be as generous as your means will allow. LITURGICAL MINISTRIES If you are interested in any of our liturgical ministries especially as greeters, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, or altar servers, please contact Father Joe at frjoe@stkathryns.org. We are starting to look at dates for training in the later part of the summer in preparation for the October schedule. Thank you! CONGRATULATIONS! Last Monday evening, our parish, through the discernment and work of our parish tithing committee, awarded six scholarships to recently graduated high school seniors. Congratulations to Kristyn Demers, Colin O Neil, Julia Izzo, Patrick O Neil, Hannah Bowen, and Rebecca Leary. These one-time scholarships are granted to students who have been active in the life of our parish community and demonstrated a commitment to the Church. We congratulate these young men and women and wish them God s blessings as they begin their college careers.
