1 PARISH MISSION STATEMENT 4 Dracut Road, Hudson, NH Tel (603) Fax (603) Through compassion, with hope, and in truth, we give Jesus our hearts, on fire with love for the Eucharist. We pray to be a community that is reconciling and forgiving; faithful to the Church s teachings; full of faith, hope, and love; is just and seeks justice; is alive to the needs of others; and is living out its call to proclaim the Good News, so that all peoples may come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, Yesterday Today and Forever.

2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, As the day of the opening Mass of our Jubilee Year approaches, I m feeling a lot of excitement for this coming year. There are so many events planned, so many programs booked, so many liturgies to mark the liturgical year, that it s almost overwhelming while at the same time energizing! If you want to be exhausted, here s a glimpse into the events between September and December of this year: September 9 annual parish picnic; September 10 new parishioners gathering; September 16 first day of religious education classes; September Sonja Corbitt retreat; September 24-October 3 Fifty Hours of Eucharistic Adoration; September Photos for Parish Directory; October Shiloh Men s Retreat; October 13 Opening Mass for the Jubilee with Bishop Libasci; October 15 new parishioners gathering; October 20 Knights of Columbus Italian Night Dinner; October 21 Jubilee Art Exhibit Epiphanies of Beauty; November 2 All Souls Commemoration 50 years with God; November 3 Dementia Forum; November th Annual Bazaar; December 1 Daughters of Eve Advent Retreat; December 9 Saint Nicholas Visits Saint Kathryn; December 15 Be a Star Distribution; December 16 Blessing of Expectant or Newly Delivered Families; December 27 Lessons and Carols for the Jubilee Year. And that s just between September and December! Imagine what happens in 2019! But this is why we are trying to provide opportunities for everyone to participate in something during this Jubilee Year so that we all have a part to play and to celebrate these fifty years together. Additionally, I m composing a prayer that will replace our Jubilee Preparation Prayer on October 13 th. Why would this be so important? Because as we enter into this year of celebration fifty years of faith, of tears and joy, of building and growing we recognize that it is only by God s good grace that we are able to be the community He intends us to be and that our faith in Him is built up because of this community. It s that spirit of Saint Kathryn s: loyalty, faithfulness, love, outreach, concern for the poor, authentic proclamation of the Gospel in every aspect of life through every medium available to us, the sacraments, our worship together all of these and more are what we must celebrate. It is a new time for us and an opportunity to become not just what we think we can be, but what God calls us to be. And what is that? We are pilgrims moving together through this life toward the Kingdom of eternal life. We re called to make our mark here in order to bear the mark of the Lamb in eternity. It seems a lofty task, but together in Christ, everything is possible! We re hitting on all of the things that make the Church important. We are looking at our outreach to the community through our service to those in need or in trouble. We are doing catechesis (religious education) for everyone from children through adults. We are socializing with one another through any number of dinners and brunches and picnics. And, we are praying and pray we must! It is in this prayer that God will build us up in Jesus Christ, to make us more faithful and better disciples, to join our hearts and minds, voices and souls together in one joyful hymn of thanksgiving to God. This can be a time of real renewal for all of us. In those moments when we ve thought we want to deepen our relationship with the Lord, it can happen through our worship, in the arts, in our witness to the community, in our outreach to the poor. Effectively, we are saying, This is and we are Saint Kathryn s! Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

5 LITURGICAL MINISTRIES We will hold a training session for new lectors and new extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Each of these sessions will cover the following information: The Theology of Lay Liturgical Ministry The Evolution of the Ministry of Reading (or Ministry of Holy Communion) The Nuts and Bolts of It All What Do I Do? Questions and Answers and Observations If you ve been interested in pursuing either of these ministries, we will have opportunities for training. The training session for new lectors will take place on Tuesday, August 28 th, from 7:45-8:45 p.m. Training for new extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion will take place on Thursday, August 30 th, from7:45-8:45 p.m. Both sessions will take place in the main church. Also, there will be a training session for altar servers on September 13 th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the church. CHURCH TOURS When our church first opened in August of 2000, tours were given regularly as a part of our introduction to the new church. Now, after eighteen years, our church remains the same, but many people may not know our history, our patrimony, and the many details that are hidden in our church that nevertheless tell our story. Each month (except during Advent and Lent), we will offer a tour on a Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and describe where many of the things you see in our church came from, the significance of religious articles you will see in our church, the story of icons, windows, and liturgical appointments. Join Father Joe for our first tour which will take place on Sunday, October 14 th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Perhaps you ll plan to join us for either this gathering or any one of a number to follow in our Jubilee Year. Space for each tour is limited, so please call the office at to register for the October 14 th tour. A tour geared for younger children will be offered at separate times. NEW OFFICE HOURS After many years, our parish office hours will change! Beginning on September 4 th, the parish office hours will be from 9:00 a.m. until noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We thank you for your understanding in this matter. Please note that the office hours will remain the same through the month of August (8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday). AUGUST 19, ADULT FAITH FORMATION We are very excited to announce the topics for adult faith formation for the fall of 2018 and the spring of In the fall, we will take the time to delve into the Gospel of Saint Mark which is the Gospel we are hearing for the remainder of the liturgical year. In fourteen weeks, we will consider the following themes: September 20 Saint Mark the Evangelist September 27 Prepare the Way of the Lord October 11 Come Follow Behind Me October 18 Feasting and Fasting October 25 Binding the Strong Man November 1 The Parable of the Sower November 15 Faith, Not Fear November 29 The Mystery of the Bread December 6 The Way of Discipleship December 13 Jesus and the Temple January 3 Signs of the End January 10 The Servant of the Lord January 17 Jesus Suffering, Death, and Resurrection January 24 Questions and Answers Our spring adult faith formation series will focus on Saint Paul s Letter to the Philippians with topics covering: March 7 Paul and the Philippians March 14 Partnership in the Gospel March 21 Friendship in Christ March 28 The Mind of Christ April4 Imitatio of Christ April 11 All Things in Christ If you participated in last year s series, you know we were going to study Philippians in the fall, however, since it is such a short study, we thought it better to do the shorter series when there is a potential of bad weather than try to make up the longer study in the spring. We will be ordering the study guides for those who wish to participate in the course (not required, but helpful). When we learn the cost of the guides, we will let you know what it is. The guides will not be required for participation, but once the books are ordered, we will not be able to get them at the reduced bulk price after the sessions have begun. Pre-registration is required through the office for both sessions. Please let Charlene or Jennifer know if you want the books as well. Morning and evening sessions will be held for both series.

6 THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MASS FOR THE OPENING OF THE JUBILEE YEAR Because of a serious conflict, the Mass for the opening of our Jubilee Year has been changed from October 6, 2018 to October 13, We understand that the shift even for one week can wreak havoc in our schedules and we apologize profusely for the inconvenience. There are already a few conflicts that will occur on that weekend, but if we want Bishop Libasci to join us for this celebration, the shift in the Mass is necessary. It is not the Bishop s calendar, but Father Joe s that caused this change. RCIA Are you or someone you know interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith? Deacon Ray and the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) team will host an evening for you to ask questions and entertain discussions about the Catholic Faith. There is no topic that is off limits and, in fact, we hope that there will be some of those difficult questions that will challenge us to greater faith! The Daughters of Eve will hold a book discussion open to everyone in the parish on Monday, September 17 th in Room 1 just ahead of what promises to be a Spirit-filled weekend with the author. CATECHISTS AND AIDES NEEDED We are still in need of a few people to help us as we begin the new catechetical year. At this moment, we need aides for grades 3 and 6 for Group 1, and a Catechist for grade 6. We also need aides for grades 1,2,3, and 6 for Group 2 as well as a grade 6 catechist. Finally, we need an aide for grade 8. Are you nervous because you ve never been involved in catechesis? Or maybe you d like to work in collaboration with someone else? Why not invite a friend to join you in the classroom and team teach? Or maybe you would be willing to receive some on the job training as an aide? If you re able to help us out, we ll give you all of the tools that you need. Please contact Sister Janice at or sr.janice@stkathryns.org or Jennifer LeClair at Jennifer.leclair@stkathryns.org. We are looking to welcome new members in all voice ranges soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass. Is it possible you don t know what part you sing? Not to worry! That s our job to figure out where you will sound the best. Don t read music? It s not a requirement, and although it s helpful, most of our members learn more by ear than by notes. Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 19th from 7:45-9:00 p.m. in the church (immediately after Vespers). If you re 14 years of age or older, you re welcome to join in. For more information, please contact Larry, Jerry, or Father Joe. 6
