2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, This has to be one of the fastest Lenten seasons on record! They say that time goes faster as we get older, but it really feels as if yesterday was Ash Wednesday! For some, that may be a blessing, especially if the disciplines of Lent can be particularly burdensome. While I admit that there hasn t been time to do all of the things that I wanted to do, this has been a particularly reflective season. Since my retreat week, I ve been very careful not to rush through the Liturgy of the Hours, but have taken particular care to be with the prayers. After saying the same psalms for more than 30 years, it s been a good discipline for me to rediscover the beauty of the words that could sometimes become nothing more than a rote recitation. It s been a tremendous blessing for my Lent to hear those words again, to read the readings, and to pray for the needs of our parish, our Church, and our world. It s definitely been more of a challenge to do any significant spiritual reading though, but for a very good reason. You see, I usually take the time during the scheduled hours of confession to do some of that reading. What has stopped me? Penitents! It has been a great blessing to have folks take full advantage of the frequency of the hours of confession this year. In years past, some of the added times were without customers. Not so this year! Our own parishioners and people from other places are coming and experiencing the full mercy and forgiveness of God. I would much rather have these times filled with the visits of people for the sacrament than for any other reason. The blessings just keep coming and it s delightful to see and hear the delight of those who celebrate the sacrament, knowing that they leave the confessional free from their sins. And now for the annual admonition please take advantage of these opportunities for the sacrament of Penance. There is still that requirement for Catholics to do their Easter Duty, namely, to receive the Holy Eucharist at least during the time between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday. For this Easter, make things right with the Lord during the same time period and receive Holy Communion unencumbered by sin. (Don t forget there s still the requirement to confess our sins at least once a year to a priest.) We all know how crazy the lines for confession get as Easter gets closer. Take advantage of the sacrament now and avoid the long lines before Holy Week. I know that that sounds a little odd, but we can take the time now to make a good, thoughtful confession rather than a kind of perfunctory confession because there are too many people waiting. And I m sorry to say that at this point, I can t even take any more appointments for confessions outside of the scheduled times because the calendar is already full! Yes, this is a very good thing, but challenging when it s just me hearing confessions. So, I beg you, squeeze in the time now so that you re not disappointed before Easter. Later on in today s bulletin, you ll see the full schedule for the remainder of Lent and for Holy Week, the Triduum, and Divine Mercy Sunday. I ll start to encourage you now to set aside time for the Triduum especially. The liturgy of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Vigil and Easter Sunday are at the very heart of our life as Catholics. And while they are longer liturgies, they are also the best of what the Church has to offer. Additionally, they are the time when we show our support for our elect and candidates as they prepare for full incorporation into the life of the Catholic community. It s a wonderful thing to see our church overflowing on these days as the whole community gathers together. It s a powerful witness to the faith of this community that all of us come together to be continually shaped into the Body of Christ. Even though we re still at the midpoint of Lent, now is the time to make the commitment to walk with the Lord and our community of faith to the Triduum. Block these days out in your calendar and give yourself the gift of a profoundly holy Easter! Now in these final days of Lent, let s all of us together make the final push to Easter. Let s look at our souls and receive the graces we need to truly feast in the joy of the new life of the Risen Christ. Let s consider the Lenten disciplines we ve undertaken and make them a gift to the Lord. Let s together walk this journey through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving and rejoice in the goodness and mercy of God! Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

6 JOIN US FOR SAINT JOSEPH S TABLE Saint Joseph is one of the most beloved saints in the Church. As the patron of workers and the protector of the family, he is honored with a feast on March 19 th. According to legend, there was a famine in Sicily many centuries ago. The villagers prayed to Saint Joseph, foster-father of the Infant Savior, and asked his intercession before the throne of God. Their prayers were answered. With the ending of the dreadful famine, a special feast of thanksgiving was held in his honor. Join Saint Kathryn s in our First Annual Saint Joseph s Table. Bring your family s favorite dessert to the parish hall and come down after Mass for some fun, fellowship, and a welcome reprieve from our Lenten fasting! CATHERINE OF SIENA: A WOMAN FOR OUR TIMES Save the date! On Sunday, April 29 th, Sister Nancy Murray, O.P., will present a one-woman performance based on the life of Saint Catherine of Siena our parish patroness. Sister Nancy, a Dominican Sister from Adrian, Michigan, is the blood sister of actor Bill Murray and a noted performer in her own right. She brings to us a wonderful performance, revealing to us the greatness of Saint Catherine and the beauty and depth of her relationship with Jesus Christ. There is general admission for this performance, so register NOW for complimentary tickets at the parish office. Tickets will be available only to our parishioners until March 15 th. On March 16 th, tickets will be made available online to the wider community and throughout the diocese. Call Charlene or Jennifer at to reserve yours today! EASTER FLOWERS Envelopes are available in the windowsills in the vestibule for you to make your offering for the Easter flowers which will decorate our church from the Easter Vigil through the Easter season. Can you help? Take an envelope, make a donation, include the names of those whom you would like to remember and return the envelope before March 25 th. The names of the donors will be recorded in the bulletin for Easter Sunday. THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT 6 LENTEN FOOD DRIVE Our annual Lenten Food Drive is in full swing! Brown bags are in the vestibule of the church through March 23 rd. You know what to do take one of the brown bags, fill it with the groceries listed on the sheet on the bag, and return it to the vestibule of the church. We ll take care of delivering the groceries to Saint John XXIII. Please note that the Food Pantry is no longer known as the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Because we would need to incorporate into the larger Saint Vincent de Paul Society (and thus pay dues), it has been renamed The Food Pantry at Saint John XXIII. K OF C LENTEN CHOWDER SUPPERS Council 5162 will hold chowder suppers during Lent again this year to raise money to support our seminarians and Sisters in formation. The final chowder supper will be on Friday, March 23 rd (not on March 16 th ) in the Parish Hall from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Choose from Clam Chowder, Corn Chowder, or Cheddar Broccoli Soup and salad, bread, drink and cookie for $7.50 per person. We also offer an alternate choice of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, drink, and cookie for $3.00. Please consider attending and bring your family and friends! LENTEN ALMSGIVING, 2018 Weekends are a particularly vulnerable time for students in Hudson who do not have access to the school cafeteria. In cooperation with the Food Pantry at Saint John XXIII, we are serving these school aged children in a unique way to address the weekend dilemma faced by so many. Our parish Lenten almsgiving will be directed to this program. While we can all do a little something along the way, the fact is that we can do a big something if we stand together and offer our alms as a parish community. Bring your alms on Holy Thursday and we will share it with others! The alms are brought forward to the altar at the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper and given to help the children in our community to have healthy food when they would otherwise go without. REFLECTING GOD S GENEROSITY TO US Offertory: $ 8, Online Giving: $ 4, Total: $ 12,750.82
