1 Saint Scholastica, pray for us! 4 Dracut Road, Hudson, NH Tel (603) Fax (603)
2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, This is the week I look forward to every year! No, I don t have any deep attachment to the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time this is my annual retreat week before the beginning of Lent! This year is a little different however. I will be on the grounds, following a retreat given many years ago by Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Finding coverage for the daily Masses was a challenge, so I canceled my reservation at Saint Joseph s Abbey in Spencer and will celebrate Mass here, but then spend time with the Lord and Archbishop Sheen. Because of this, Mass will be celebrated each day this week at 8:30 a.m. with no evening Masses or confessions until Saturday, February 10 th. Don t forget that next Saturday is our Marriage Celebration Dinner in the parish hall. All of the reports indicate that this year is going to be as wonderful an evening as it was last year, so if you are registered, expect a delightful evening, delicious food, and good company. If you haven t registered, there are still a couple of places available, but please register as soon as possible. Unfortunately, we cannot accept walk-ins. Also, because I am on retreat, there will not be a session on The Bible and the Blessed Virgin Mary this week. (Sorry now I know I m being a pest!) Enjoy the day off for this week, because then we jump in with both feet for the months of February and March. With that said, beginning on February 15 th, the morning session will begin a little earlier running from 9:45-11:15 a.m. That way, anyone who assists at the morning Mass on Thursdays can go right downstairs and grab a cup of coffee without having to wait for more than an hour before class begins. The time for the evening session will remain the same. Also this weekend, I would ask that lectors and servers sign up for the extra Masses during Lent. As you know, Lent begins on February 14 th, which means we will have two Masses each weekday at 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The sign up sheets are in the vestry and, for the lectors, the readings for each day will be in a packet for you to take with you to prepare in advance. The full liturgical schedule and information for days of fast and abstinence will be published in next week s bulletin. As part of our Lenten discipline, we will again conduct a Food Drive for the Food Pantry at Saint John s. Beginning on the First Sunday of Lent, bags will be in the vestibule of the church with a listing of items needed. Please take a bag, fill it (or something like it), and return it to the vestibule. We ll take care of it from there. We will also use our Lenten almsgiving to assist the Feed Our Kids program here in Hudson. As you know, this program provides a backpack of food for weekends and school vacations for children who are usually fed at school. In years past, your generosity to this program has been overwhelming. I know that we can count on you again to help these children and teens out. More information will be included in next week s bulletin to provide specific details. Finally, I would ask that you begin praying in earnest for the men in our RCIA process who are looking to complete their initiation in the Catholic Church this Easter. Your prayers for James Hyatt, Matthew LaVertue, David Schellhammer, and David Lemieux are a sign of your support for them as they continue their journey to the Easter Sacraments. You are remembered every day in my prayers anyway, but you will certainly be remembered each day in a particular way during this retreat week. Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

4 THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SAINT KATHRYN S FINANCE PRESENTATION JANUARY 27 AND 28, 2018 My name is Carol Holleran and I am here today to give you an update from the Finance Committee. It is a requirement of the diocese that we do this yearly. The finance committee prides itself on budgeting and managing the church s money and expenses to the best of our ability. Our fiscal year runs July to June. Our operating revenue last year was $745,000 with the largest amount, $654,000 coming from the offertory. Our expenses and liabilities last year totaled $821,000. Even though this was slightly higher than we budgeted, we felt that we could manage this year at the same weekly budget of $11,900. We are 6 months into the new fiscal year. The percentages for income and expenses remain the same as last year. Our largest source of income is from the offertory at 82%, which is $349,000. We are collecting 24% of our weekly offertory from on-line giving. Online giving allows us to keep a constant income. Just like operating a personal budget, each week is important. When people go on vacation or we have a storm and that contribution is not made up the following week, we have to adjust our budget. Other income consists of fundraising activities, donations or bequests. The bazaar is our largest fundraiser and thanks to you, this year was our best year ever. We were able to pay off the balance of the roof debt. We are reforming a FUNdraising committee which will be helpful in years to come. We can use your help. (Leo Hudon is presently in charge of reconvening the committee. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Leo at leohudon1@hotmail.com.) Our expenses include salaries, taxes, benefits, and utilities. We have insurance to pay: workers compensation, property, auto, and liability plus all the normal expenses and supplies of running an office (paper supplies, copier lease, telephone, fax, internet, utilities, etc). There are Religious Education, Music Ministry, and Liturgical expenses. We have assessments that are dictated by the diocese and paid to them directly. We still donate at least 10% to charity. We are starting to see a drop in our electric bills, about 30%, due to putting in LED lights in the church. This year we are 1.5% above the budget. Our total expenses have been $367,000 against a budget of $371,000. We are blessed at this time that 2 of the diocese required staff members are handled by volunteers (business manager and bookkeeper). Next year we will need to include actual salaries for these positions. The book store has been a wonderful ministry for Saint Kathryn s and is now running on its own. Our church, hall, rectory, and grounds are a beautiful place for us to worship and call our own. Hard to believe, but we have been in this location almost 20 years. Like any house, we have maintenance projects lining up and unfortunately, with the projects of the last few years, we do not have money set aside for these future repairs. (We are looking now at replacing the tiles in the parish hall and classrooms, updating the computer systems for the HVAC system, repaving the parking lot, and the replacement of the sound system and organ for the church.) I would like to mention some of our expenses. We have replaced the roof, fire suppression system, and overhauled the heat and air conditioning system. (This last overhaul helped us with the actual machinery, but not with the computer system that drives it.) We have maintained required updating, for example, the repainting of the sanctuary, vestry, sacristy, reconciliation room, cry room and the vestibules. We have purchased new signage to replace the ones that were deteriorating, put LED replacement lights in the Hall and Office, purchased a new snow thrower and replaced the broken keyboard. We will keep you updated when any new projects are needed and will share their cost. As a member of the finance committee, I cannot tell you how thankful and appreciative we are for your support. We would not have this beautiful place if it were not for you. It s never easy or fun to talk about money, but it is a reality. The finance team works well together and I assure you we will continue to be good stewards of your money and do the best we can to keep the budget balanced. Besides me, the committee consists of Father Joe, Rick Wickham, Peter Krauss, Adam Florczak and Dave Wilson. You are welcome to ask any of us questions regarding the budget or expenses. We encourage you to share your input and ideas with us. Thank you again for your time and support. 4

PARISH RELIGIOUS GOODS STORE Just a shout out thank you to all the volunteers who took over two hours (!) out of their Saturday morning to attend the most recent store volunteer meeting. The discussions and insights of everyone attending were truly remarkable. The community at Saint Kathryn s is truly blessed to have such a dedicated group helping to minister to the parish by overseeing the daily operations of our store. Just before Christmas, we brought in a newly published book entitled A Pope and a President written by Paul Kengor. It is a narrative history of the intertwining of the lives of Saint John Paul II and Ronald Reagan. It starts from before they were both born and continues through their respective public lives. We ordered two copies of it and both sold quickly. The two customers who have read it have nothing but rave reviews for the book. We are ordering more copies based on the enthusiastic response. Stop in and check it out soon. CHOIR REHEARSALS Choir rehearsals are in full swing as we look forward to the Sacred Triduum and choral music concert at the end of the choir season. We have some exquisite music being prepared for the Triduum, Tenebrae, and every Sunday too! Ask any choir member they re loving every minute (or at least most minutes) of rehearsals and of our time together. What s required? An ability to sing in tune, to blend with others, to serve God through your voice. And that voice may come as a soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, or bass. Is reading music a requirement? It s helpful but not required. And there s no audition. Join us for a rehearsal or two and you ll be hooked. And if this is not the right ministry for you, don t worry we ll be very charitable and let you know. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the church. We welcome anyone from Grade 7 to age 97. (If older, we might ask an audition.) REFLECTING GOD S GENEROSITY TO US Offertory: $ 8, Online Giving: $ 2, Total: $ 10, Thank you for your continued generosity to our parish. Our weekly budget for the parish is $11,900. 6
