2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Last week, we marked the second of our Jubilee Weeks with a showing of the film, The 13 th Day, as well as our weekly Lectio series and the recitation of the Rosary following the morning Mass on Friday, the one hundredth anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady at Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun. Next month, we ll focus more on community and the social side of Saint Kathryn s with the parish bazaar and penny sale which is always a great occasion for our parishioners, friends, and benefactors to come together. These Jubilee Weeks are intended to help us grow more and more in our understanding of community in all of the ways that we should be working together as Church through prayer and worship, in service and outreach, in social times together, and in ongoing faith formation. There will be different emphases each month so that everyone in the parish will have the opportunity to participate in ways that are most comfortable for them. We have been so blessed with many vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life over the last several years. In our ongoing prayers, we also face the challenge of encouraging more young men and women to consider service to the Lord in a Church vocation. When I talk with other priests in our diocese, there are some who haven t performed a wedding in their parish in years; others talk about one or two weddings. We have had fifteen this year! What is even more beautiful about that is the fact that we continue to see many of those couples return to us after the wedding. It is clear that we are reverencing the sacrament of marriage and the gift of family life (consider the wonderful choir of infants we heard last Sunday!). Let s face it the children who talk back and forth to one another as well as the ones who love to hear their own voices echoing throughout the church are a part of our family. Sometimes they shake us up a bit, but the fact of the matter is that they are being introduced to church and to Mass and to community. They are being taught at a very young age that this is a part of what we do as Catholics. So while they may shake us from our complacency in prayer, they also remind us that we too were more than likely brought to Mass as children and found our place in the community. And the more the little children come to Mass, the more they will come to Christ each and every day. This brings me to the point of my letter today. Vocations to the priesthood and religious life are fostered at home and supported by the Church. The vocation of marriage is lived out in the best way possible in the home. For those of us called to the priesthood or consecrated life, it is often because someone at home encouraged us and taught us about the Lord. But it is in the community of faith that the vocation finds its support. We pray for vocations in so many ways here. We have the Vocation Rosary that circulates among our parishioners weekly; the Vocation Support Association who encourages notes and gifts to our parishioners in formation; the daily prayers of many parishioners who beg the Lord of the harvest to send more laborers into the vineyard. But what about our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews? Do we ever present the idea of a Church vocation to them? That can sometimes be the hard part the vocations come from someone else s family, but not mine! But ask any priest, any religious Sister or Brother. We too come from families who may or may not have supported our call. We too come from homes where arguments took place, where family gatherings were treasured, where older brothers accidentally tackled us in a tag football game and broke our wrist. (Oops! Did I just reveal something?) Our homes were as normal and dysfunctional as any. And when the Lord called and we answered, we sometimes met with resistance from our families and friends while other times we found encouragement and support. There are posters and signs all over the place If you see something, say something. The context is very different from what I m suggesting, but perhaps if you see something special, something spiritual, something lovely in a young person, maybe you d be willing to say something to invite them to think about the consecrated life or priesthood. The worst thing that could happen is that they laugh it off. Trust me later on they ll think about what you said, and perhaps even consider investigating the possibility a little more. With just a word, a priest, religious Sister or religious Brother could be born and all thanks to you! Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

YOUTH GROUP CORN MAZE TRIP The Saint Kathryn s Youth Group is going to get lost! We are planning a trip to the Elwoods Orchard s corn maze in Londonderry on the afternoon of Saturday October 21 st. As always, all our middle and high school youth are invited to participate. We will also have a picnic lunch there or stop for lunch along the way. Interested in this fun event? If you are a middle or high school youth and have not attended a Saint Kathryn s youth group event, you have missed out! Afraid you won t know anyone? Well, you are always welcome to bring a friend. If you wish to be on our list so you are the first to know about future Youth Group events, contact Cheryl Ruane (cheryl.ruane@gmail.com). REFLECTING GOD S GENEROSITY TO US Offertory: $ 8, Online Giving: $ 2, Total: $11, Don t forget that our weekly budget for the parish is $11,900 per week. We are running a little bit behind in meeting the budget already (and we re only completing the first quarter). If you ve been away, can you help make up for the deficit? We know that the economy is a challenge it is for us too! In order to maintain our programs, buildings, and activities, we really need your help! Thank you! RELIGIOUS GOODS STORE NEWS As many of you know Father Solanus Casey, ofm Cap., will be canonized as a saint by the Church this coming November. He was known as The Porter of Saint Bonaventure because much of his life as a priest was spent as the greeter/doorkeeper at Saint Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit. His life story is an amazing one to say the least. In keeping with this historic event, we have purchased copies of two books about his life and ministry. They are both available in the store. Our ordering for the Bazaar has been in full swing. Make the effort to attend the bazaar as the Religious Goods Store will have many new products, many sale and discount items, and discount coupons for the store during the weekend. The sales representative from our prime jewelry supplier, Bliss Mfg., is planning to attend to help with questions you may have for your jewelry selections. We have also added an additional book case to the store so now we have not only expanded our Catholic reading selection but we have freed up some much needed counter space to display more merchandise. If you come in any time now, you will see some beautiful Fontanini Nativity displays. As a dealer in Fontanini, we have access to the newest figures and other pieces for your nativity from the gates of the city of Bethlehem, to the animals, to angels, to trees, wells, foliage and more. Make your Fontanini Nativity the talk of your neighborhood. Who knows? You might even spread the Good News in the process! 4

5 OCTOBER 15, 2017 BAZAAR, 2017 We re getting ready for an even bigger, better parish bazaar and penny sale this year. The amazing thing about our annual bazaar is that every leader has developed what their predecessor began and so each year something new is present while maintaining the best of what we have had in the past. The Crafters, bakers, religious goods table, raffles, and penny sale gifts all seem to get better every year. And just when we think we ve seen it all, something new and wonderful appears! That s the way it is with our Saint Kathryn parishioners! So now that we re four weeks out, start thinking about how you can participate in this year s festivities. Make sure you get your raffle tickets sold early and the proceeds back to us as soon as you can. Bring in your Penny Sale gift early, and we ll be able to give folks a sneak peek at what s coming. Think about what delectable you might create for this year, and, of course, brace yourself for some incredible food coming from our kitchen. Raffle tickets can be found on the windowsills in the vestibule. Sell those raffle tickets and get the proceeds back to the office as soon as possible and minimize the weekly reminder to sell those tickets! The Christmas Bazaar and Penny Sale will take place on November Make sure to tell your friends and family! ITALIAN NIGHT DINNER Mangia! Mangia! Council 5162 of the Knights of Columbus will host the annual Italian Night Supper on Saturday, October 21 st, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. in the parish hall. Tickets will be available in the back of the church as well as through the parish office. Tickets are $12.50 for adults and $6.00 for children 12 and under. Join us for pasta, polpette (meatballs), sausage, salad, bread and butter and desserts. Don t miss the chance to have a wonderful meal at a good price with the best company in town! Grazie! PARISH NURSE MEETING We are hoping to begin a new ministry for parish nursing here at Saint Kathryn s. Our nurses will be available according to a schedule we will establish for blood pressure checks, consultations regarding medications and their purpose, health screening, etc. They cannot provide actual medical care, but we do look forward to them offering advice regarding diet and exercise, etc. If you are a nurse and interested in hearing more about parish nursing, please join us for a meeting on Tuesday, October 24 th at 7:45 p.m. in Room 1. We look forward to seeing you there! PENNY SALE GIFTS AND THEME BASKETS Please bring in your Penny Sale gifts and theme baskets as soon as possible. We start gathering them at this time of year in either the church or the parish office, and we are looking forward to the wonderful selection of gifts that our parishioners and friends always seem to present. As you know, our annual bazaar is the biggest fundraiser for the parish, and this year s proceeds are intended to help us to pay off the new roof on the church. Your participation in some way is what helps us to make the bazaar a success and your presence helps us to build community at the same time. It s wonderful when we can say our bazaar is an experience of all for one and one for all! FATHER LARRY RICHARDS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE Saint Catherine of Siena parish in Manchester will host a retreat led by Father Larry Richards from October Father Richards is a gifted speaker, dynamic teacher, and retreat master. His talks will take place from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Father Richards will speak about: Monday, October 16: God s Love and Prayer Tuesday, October 17: Love of Others (done within the context of Holy Mass) Wednesday, October 18: Passion of Christ and the Need for Confession (followed by the opportunity for individual confessions) Thursday, October 19: Adoration and Healing (in the context of Eucharistic adoration and a healing service). 6 TRUNK OR TREAT RETURNS! Children of the parish are invited to come to Mass and/or religious education classes on Sunday, October 29 th, dressed as saints as we anticipate the Solemnity of All Saints. Following the 10:30 a.m. Mass, children and parents may proceed to the parking lot behind the church where several saints will be stationed at their 21 st century vehicles offering sweet treats and holy cards! Be creative and frugal! When planning the costume, take the opportunity to pray with your child and help him or her get to know the saint at saints or with a book from the parish library or store. In anticipation of the holy day, Halloween may play out the battle of good and evil; All Saints Day reminds us God has won. Join us for All Saints Trunk or Treat and celebrate the heroes of our faith made perfect in Christ Jesus! Are you an adult who may wish to be part of Trunk or Treat? Then you ll want to contact Charlene Maniotis at charlene.maniotis@stkathryns.org or , ext We are in need of adults willing to open their trunks for this fun event to take place. Are you a 9 th and 10 th grader who would like to be among our extra-special saints? If so, plan to call Mrs. Maniotis (or her) to let her know which saint you d like to be and make the commitment to this fun hour. Why not have a little bit of fun for our younger parishioners and teach them a little bit about your saint? CYO SPORTS REGISTRATION Back to school and CYO sports for the fall and winter seasons. St. Kathryn s Children s and Youth Ministry offers a CYO Sports opportunity for 4th through 12th graders to join structured basketball and cheerleading teams. CYO sports offers fun in a structured, competitive, and skills-learning experience and could be just right for you. Games are on Sunday afternoons and practices are weeknights. If you are a registered member of St. Kathryn s Parish (living in NH or MA) in the above mentioned grades and are interested in participating in competitive sports and exciting tournaments, then call John Hurley at If you are an adult and interested in coaching, please call ASAP. TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 6 ADULT FAITH FORMATION SERIES Our fall adult faith formation series is based on the Acts of the Apostles, with Dr. Mary Healy as the instructor. Using the Lectio: Evangelization series from Augustine Institute, we will delve into the evangelization efforts found in the early Church. October 19 Signs and Wonders October 26 How Jesus Makes an Evangelist November 2* Sacraments and the Spirit November 16 Leadership in the Church November 30 Charisms in the Spirit December 7* Joy in Persecution December 14 The Belly of the Beast Sessions will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and again from 7:30-9:00 p.m. with identical presentations. (Please note that on November 2 and December 7, sessions will run from 8:00-9:30 p.m.) Don t miss this wonderful series and the opportunity to become more comfortable with your role as an evangelizer! Remember that faith formation is ongoing! We can never say that we have learned everything there is to know about our faith even the greatest scholars and doctors of the Church would not presume to say that! Why not commit yourself to one or both of these series as we continue to grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord, of the Catholic faith, and of our Church? FAITH FACTS We all know where the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus can be found right in front of the church! But did you know that the visionary who received the messages of the Sacred Heart is celebrated this week? Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque was a Visitation nun, born in France on July 22, 1647 and died at Paray-le- Monial on October 17, Saint Margaret Mary was inspired by Christ to establish a Holy Hour and to pray from 11:00 p.m. until midnight to share in the sadness He endured when abandoned by His apostles in the agony in the garden. She was also inspired to receive Holy Communion on the first Friday of every month for the salvation of souls. The first Friday devotions that we maintain here at Saint Kathryn s are in honor of the request of the Lord to honor and love His Sacred Heart and to atone for our sins and the sins of the world. After the evening Mass on First Friday, we traditionally pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart and the Act of Consecration and Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
