2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, When I was in the Novitiate with the Capuchins many, many years ago, it was not unusual to wake up to the Sacred Heart or the Blessed Mother standing outside of the door of one of the novices. To tell you the truth, I think our novice master was the one who started the whole joke, but it was quickly picked up by my fellow novices. I remember that I had to leave the novitiate for an overnight at one of the friaries in Brooklyn, NY (with all kinds of special permission!), and when I returned back to the novitiate, the statue of the Sacred Heart was at my door with a note that read (to the best of my recollection), Mother and I wanted to wait up for you, but she got tired...so here I am. Welcome home! I chuckled to myself at the note (not too loudly though, lest I break the Grand Silence), went into my room and discovered the statue of the Blessed Mother in my bed all tucked in and comfortable. She didn t have a good night sleep that night because I quickly recognized the handwriting and placed both statues in front of his door with the note Good morning! We re both early risers, and you, Brother, are a slacker! There was plenty of laughter over that one especially since we rose at 5:30 a.m.! I tell you that story because I m sure you noticed a little difference as you came into church this weekend. You probably noticed that Saint Joseph is now in the shrine, the Sacred Heart and Saint John Vianney now flank the sanctuary, and Saint Michael the Archangel is now guarding from the chapel. This is a whole lot more than silly movement of statues. They actually have quite a purpose! As our long-time parishioners remember, the original Blessed Sacrament altar was where the Shrine to Our Lady is; the Shrine for the Sacred Heart was where Mary was. When the tabernacle was moved to the center, Mary was placed in the larger shrine and the Sacred Heart was placed in her former shrine. Saint Michael didn t come into the church until 2004 (we just found the paperwork) and poor Saint Joseph was hiding in the corner. However, if you look at the windows above where Saint Joseph is now, the window to the far right is the Betrothal of Mary and Joseph. By moving his statue to this more prominent position, we hope that we will keep the connection between the yes of Joseph and the yes of Mary. The Sacred Heart, now nearer to the sanctuary, stands as a reminder, not only of Christ the High Priest, but also of the mercy that flows from the Heart of Christ. This mercy flows out to us most abundantly in the Eucharist that is celebrated at the altar. On the ambo (pulpit) side, Saint John Vianney, the patron of parish priests, now finds his home, interceding for our congregation and especially the priest-celebrant of the liturgy. Saint Michael the Archangel has not been demoted by being moved to the Chapel. Instead, he stands closer to the Pietà to remind us that while the ultimate battle has been won through the death and resurrection of Jesus, the ongoing battle for souls continues to this day. It is Saint Michael s task to defend us in battle during this earthly life. There will be a couple of other things taking place in the near future. A handrail is being prepared for installation near the Shrine of Our Lady for those who may need a little extra support getting up the steps. We re anticipating a wrought-iron base with an oak handrail. An identical structure will be added to the left side of the ambo for lectors who may need to steady themselves going up or down the steps. We re trying to keep it inconspicuous, but it will be there. A little extra support is always a good thing! Likewise, one of the two vigil candle sets will be for the Sacred Heart (appropriately marked) and the other for Saint Joseph. Although both stands will remain by Saint Joseph, the one closer to the altar will be for prayers directed to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We know that this is new and a little different, but we are hopeful that our movement of the statuary will help us in our devotion and the reminder that we are always surrounded by the great cloud of witnesses. Until next week God bless! Father Joe 2

5 OCTOBER 16, 2016 PARISH BAZAAR AND PENNY SALE November begins our 23 rd annual Bazaar and Penny Sale. In those 23 years, a lot has changed, but we still have among the best fairs to be had. And why? Because of you our parishioners who support this event by your participation. For our new parishioners, this experience is a blast! It s a great opportunity to meet some of our seasoned parishioners as well as grow in that sense of community for which Saint Kathryn s is well known. How can you help? Pick up one of the envelopes in the vestibule windowsills this weekend; Sell those tickets and get the proceeds back to us as soon as possible (gets me quieter sooner!); Perhaps you d like to pick up a gift for the Penny Sale (new items only, please) great sales will be coming up in a couple of weeks, so why not take advantage of them for the good of the parish?; Consider volunteering to work before, during, or after the bazaar we need folks to set up and clean up, folks to sell raffle and 50/50 tickets on the floor, folks to staff tables, etc.; Maybe you re a bit of a baker and can provide items for the Sweet Sensations table; Do you make preserves? Maybe you could share the fruits of your labor (literally) with that table; We could use some teens to help us, not only for set up and take down, but also as runners for the Penny Sale distribution, as Santa s Helpers, and for a million other things. Remember this is our primary fundraiser for the parish, so we need all of our parishioners to participate in one way or another. Together, we can make this the best Bazaar and Penny Sale ever but we need you! For more information, please contact Jeanette Cassidy or Charlene Maniotis at or by at jeanette.cassidy@stkathryns.org or charlene.maniotis@stkathryns.org. 5

6 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME COMFORT SHAWLS The Prayer Shawl ministry here at Saint Kathryn s involves a group of people who knit or crochet prayer shawls for those among us who may be in need of healing, consolation, or comfort. When completed, they are brought to Mass for blessing by Father Joe. They are then placed before the Eucharistic Lord during our Intercessory Prayer Holy Hour and prayed over by those assembled. The shawls are then distributed with a scroll of explanation, prayer, and best wishes to those in need. If you know someone who should be presented with a shawl or you would like to help create them, please contact Eileen G o s s e l i n a t o r egosselin423@yahoo.com. These shawls have been a great source of blessing and consolation to those who have received them. PRAY FOR OUR DEACON-CANDIDATES Pray for our Deacon-Candidates: Joseph Dion Randy O Neill GET TO KNOW SAINT PETER Join us for this fall s adult faith formation program, Lectio: Peter. Directed by Dr. Tim Gray and facilitated by Father Joe, we have a chance to study the fisherman turned apostle and the first pope. Our sessions will take place on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon and again in the evening from 7:45 until 9:15 p.m. The topics include: October 20: Peter and the Keys: The Primacy of the Church; October 27: In the Shadow of the Galilean: Peter s Rising Leadership; November 3: Discipleship at a Distance: Peter and the Passion of Christ; December 1: Peter and Pentecost: The Transforming Power of the Holy Spirit; December 8: Peter bar Jonah: How Peter Came to Rome; December 15: Quo Vadis? : Peter s Way of the Cross. For those who have participated in the past, you know that these are powerful presentations and the group discussions are very enlightening. Plan to join us for each session. COMING HOME TO CATHOLICISM Coming Home to Catholicism will enter into the third session this Thursday. Do you know of someone (or maybe even you, yourself) who might be looking for a way to come back to the Church? While the program is open for the full seven weeks for those who want to explore the possibility of coming home to the Church, sessions 4-7 tend to be more in-depth. Coming Home to Catholicism gives you a forum for your questions, concerns, and ideas. It s a parish program to respond to some of the concerns of those who took a hiatus from the practice of the faith who are looking for a way to ask questions about the Church since they ve been away, who may be rediscovering the need for living in a faith tradition, to process hurts or misunderstandings that have been caused by a priest, Sister, or other Catholic. Here s a great opportunity for you to consider a move back to the Church in a non-judgmental, safe environment. What do you say? Is it your time to Come Home? CONFESSION TIMES With the new format for the cover of the bulletin, our confession times have not found a space. So, as a reminder, confessions are heard on Saturdays from 9:15-10:00 a.m. and from 3:00-3:30 p.m., and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-6:50 p.m. Confessions can also be heard by calling the parish office for an appointment. CAN YOU HELP US? Over the last several years, we have gained many new parishioners. This is a wonderful witness to the community here at Saint Kathryn s which has been built on the shoulders of our long-time parishioners. This is a legacy of dedicated parishioners and priests who have served the Saint Kathryn community well. Wouldn t you like to be a part of this legacy? There are many ways that this is possible. Maybe you d be willing to sign up as a volunteer for a few hours during the bazaar and meet some new people; join us for some of our social activities and share a meal with us. Maybe some of the men would consider joining the Knights of Columbus or the Men of Saint Joseph. Then there s the Mercy Meal ministry, and Bible studies, and, well the list is too long. Don t be a spectator dig in and be a member of Saint Kathryn s! 6

7 OCTOBER 16, 2016 ALL SAINTS TRUNK OR TREAT Children of the parish are invited to come to Mass and/or religious education classes on Sunday, October 30 th, dressed as saints as we anticipate the Solemnity of All Saints. Following the 10:30 a.m. Mass, children and parents may proceed to the parking lot behind the church where several saints will be stationed at their 21 st century vehicles offering sweet treats and holy cards! Costumes do not have to be elaborate or expensive; try a brown bathrobe and some stuffed animals for Saint Francis; or, an armor chest-plate from the Dollar Tree for Joan of Arc or Saint Michael the Archangel. Have a princess costume? A Google search for princess saints turns up dozens of canonized saints. Be creative! When planning the costume, take the opportunity to pray with your child and help him or her get to know the saint at or with a book from the parish library or store. In anticipation of the holy day, Halloween may play out the battle of good and evil; All Saints Day reminds us God has won. Join us for All Saints Trunk or Treat and celebrate the heroes of our faith made perfect in Christ Jesus! Are you an adult who may wish to be part of Trunk or Treat? Then you ll want to contact Charlene Maniotis at Charlene.maniotis@stkathryns.org or , ext We are in need of several more adults willing to open their trunks for this fun event to take place. Are you a 9 th and 10 th grader who would like to be among our extra-special saints? If so, plan to call Mrs. Maniotis (or her) to let her know which saint you d like to be and make the commitment to this fun hour. You may also use this event towards your Confirmation service hours. PARISH RELIGIOUS GOODS STORE The news this week is short and sweet! A good number of our parishioners have been enjoying Father Joe s announcement of the MASSIVE sale in our parish Religious Goods Store. Those who have been in the store know that there s nothing MASSIVE about the space, but the product line is pretty impressive for such a limited area. Most of the new Advent and Christmas items are in and on display. Some are available in limited quantities due to manufacturer demand. By the time you read this all of our Thanksgiving and Christmas cards should be in and ready for purchase. All of them are religious in theme and all gorgeous! The store will look like its a new business based on all the rearranging that was done for the new merchandise, especially with a gorgeous nativity scene set up in the middle of the store. You have plenty of time to look at the newest items and catalogs and still get your order in and delivered for Christmas. We are planning a huge display for the bazaar with many, many discounts and deals on all kinds of products and stocking stuffers! Best of all, if you sign up on our Facebook page (Saint Kathryn Religious Goods), everything you buy as a one time purchase is 20% off!!! And for those of you who shop any of the Fontanini, Roman, or Bliss products you know that this kind of discount is unheard of, and it won t last forever!!! A word to the wise ( and the shopping procrastinators!!), don t delay. Pay us a visit today! RESPECT-LOVE-PROTECT October is annually observed as Respect Life Month in Catholic Churches across our nation. This provides a wonderful opportunity for catechists to teach children and youth the truth about the dignity of the human person. Human life is under constant attack in our culture today; from the moment of conception to natural death. Life is threatened because we no longer understand what it means to be human, and what our humanity calls forth from us in our responsibility to care for other persons. John Paul II in his encyclical the Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae, EV) tells us that For the Christian, it is an absolute imperative to respect, love and promote the life of every brother and sister, in accordance with the requirements of God s bountiful love in Jesus Christ (n. 77). 7
