1 4 Dracut Road, Hudson, NH Tel (603) Fax (603) PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Through compassion, with hope, and in truth, we give Jesus our hearts, on fire with love for the Eucharist. We pray to be a community that is reconciling and forgiving; faithful to the Church s teachings; full of faith, hope, and love; is just and seeks justice; is alive to the needs of others; and is living out its call to proclaim the Good News, so that all peoples may come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, Yesterday Today and Forever. 1

2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, There s something wonderfully exciting about the beginning of a new academic year. Maybe it s the former teacher in me (if there really is such a thing as a former teacher ), but the prospect of starting new is both challenging and energizing. Even as you look at the bulletin this week, you ll see the increase in activity even before religious ed classes and regularly scheduled meetings begin! There are many things to look forward to as we draw closer to the beginning of our Jubilee Year with the opening Mass on October 13 th. Those were listed a couple of weeks ago in the bulletin, so if you haven t had a chance to look, you ll want to go back and cut it out to put on your refrigerator. Of course, we would be remiss if we overlooked the fact that someone so special and key to our life at Saint Kathryn s won t be with us to participate in these events. I think it s fair to say that we re all still in a state of shock over the passing of our business manager and longtime parishioner, Rick Wickham. Rick was a great support to me personally during some dark days at Saint Kathryn s, and upon retirement, became a volunteer member of our parish staff, serving as business manager for the parish. His mark will long be with us having done yeoman work on the conversion of all of the lights in the parking lot and church to LEDs, getting things lined up for the upgrades to our HVAC system (which still need to be done), and the repurposing of the old library/conference room to become our religious goods store. As chair of our Finance Committee, he kept his eye on our budget and brought us through some big projects, including the painting of the church. Contracts were negotiated, vendors brought on board, and the roof replaced on the church, office, and rectory. But these were the things that Rick did. At the same time, he always added humor and insight during staff meetings and at any parish gathering. We have indeed been blessed, and I can only believe that the Lord wanted him to be able to enjoy our Jubilee without having to do any more work. I m sure that he will be praying for us during this year especially, and more importantly, giving heaven a run for its money with his humor and quick wit! To Bernadette, Lisa, Laura, and Shana, our hearts are with you in this time and our prayers will be with you moving forward. In some way, I believe that we are, as a parish, experiencing a taste of new life even now. Even as we mourn one who has left us, at the same time new parishioners are joining us and enjoying the hard work of our founders. Those who have been in the parish for 30, 40, and indeed, since the beginning of Saint Kathryn s 50 years ago, have built a strong foundation for us to continue to build upon. And as we do, we pause to give thanks to God for those shoulders upon which we stand. We look to these men and women who built, not buildings, but a community, and realize that it is their hard work that keeps attracting people not to the building, but to the community of faith. That our new members keep mentioning the family spirit of Saint Kathryn s, we cannot overlook the truth that this has been a characteristic of our parish from the beginning. God has blessed us and we must thank Him for it! Next Sunday, as we celebrate our Jubilee Parish Picnic, we ll remember our dear friend and toast his memory. Likewise, we ll remember those who have gone before us and those who have remained with us who began this good work that we call Saint Kathryn s. In so doing, we honor their memory and pledge to continue to build an ever-brighter future. As always, there will be laughter and there will be tears but all will be our spiritual family, Saint Kathryn s. She has prayed for us and now, ever grateful for the graces God has given to us through her intercession, we continue to be a feisty community, as was our patroness; a reflective community who continues to delve into the mysteries of God s life and activity among us, as did our patroness; a holy community who continues to love and to serve and sometimes even to suffer, as were the hallmarks of our patroness. We are learning well. May we continue on into the future with hope, with confidence, with faith! Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

4 THE TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SONJA CORBITT LOVE THE WORD RETREAT By now you all know about our special event coming up in September! Those of you who have seen her on EWTN or attended the Hope Conference last year know what an amazing speaker Sonja is and how fruitful and transformative her talks can be. Visit our parish website and click on the link to learn more about her and watch a few of her YouTube videos. Her book, Ignite, is available at Saint Kathryn Religious Goods. If you haven't picked up your tickets yet, you can visit the parish office or purchase online through our website. If you don't plan to attend the Saturday Retreat, be sure to join us on Friday for a very special evening for our parish with a light reception and meet-and-greet immediately following. CANOE TRIP Earlier this year, parishioner Mike Todisco suggested a group canoe/kayak excursion, and several parishioners expressed interest. Mike has looked into many different rental companies and the one that has the best location and pricing does not have any dates available for early fall. Rather than go with a different company that is farther away and not as accommodating, the trip will instead be slated for July 2019, date TBD. This event is not sponsored by the parish, but participants would meet and depart for the canoeing location from the church parking lot. If you already gave your contact information for the trip to Mike, he will contact you closer to the date. For questions, please contact Mike at matodis@gmail.com. 5 SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 CHURCH TOURS When our church first opened in August of 2000, tours were given regularly as a part of our introduction to the new church. Now, after eighteen years, our church remains the same, but many people may not know our history, our patrimony, and the many details that are hidden in our church that nevertheless tell our story. Each month (except during Advent and Lent), we will offer a tour on a Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and describe where many of the things you see in our church came from, the significance of religious articles you will see in our church, the story of icons, windows, and liturgical appointments. Join Father Joe for our first tour which will take place on Sunday, October 14 th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Perhaps you ll plan to join us for either this gathering or any one of a number to follow in our Jubilee Year. Space for each tour is limited, so please call the office at to register for the October 14 th tour. A tour geared for younger children will be offered at separate times. NEW OFFICE HOURS After many years, our parish office hours will change! Beginning on September 4 th, the parish office hours will be from 9:00 a.m. until noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We thank you for your understanding in this matter. Please note that the office hours will remain the same through the month of August (8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday). FORMED Just because we don t announce it weekly, remember that we have an annual subscription to the Augustine Institute s program, FORMED! Have you learned anything new about your faith this summer? Why not challenge yourself to learn just one thing new? Register with FORMED for lectures, films, podcasts, and interesting reading. Sign up today at Our code is ADULT FAITH FORMATION We are very excited to announce the topics for adult faith formation for the fall of 2018 and the spring of In the fall, we will take the time to delve into the Gospel of Saint Mark which is the Gospel we are hearing for the remainder of the liturgical year. In fourteen weeks, we will consider the following themes: September 20 Saint Mark the Evangelist September 27 Prepare the Way of the Lord October 11 Come Follow Behind Me October 18 Feasting and Fasting October 25 Binding the Strong Man November 1 The Parable of the Sower November 15 Faith, Not Fear November 29 The Mystery of the Bread December 6 The Way of Discipleship December 13 Jesus and the Temple January 3 Signs of the End January 10 The Servant of the Lord January 17 Jesus Suffering, Death, and Resurrection January 24 Questions and Answers Our spring adult faith formation series will focus on Saint Paul s Letter to the Philippians with topics covering: March 7 Paul and the Philippians March 14 Partnership in the Gospel March 21 Friendship in Christ March 28 The Mind of Christ April4 Imitatio of Christ April 11 All Things in Christ If you participated in last year s series, you know we were going to study Philippians in the fall; however, since it is such a short study, we thought it better to do the shorter series when there is a potential of bad weather than try to make up the longer study in the spring. We will be ordering the study guides for those who wish to participate in the course (not required, but helpful). When we learn the cost of the guides, we will let you know what it is. The guides will not be required for participation, but once the books are ordered, we will not be able to get them at the reduced bulk price after the sessions have begun. Pre-registration is required through the office for both sessions. Please let Charlene or Jennifer know if you want the books as well. Morning and evening sessions will be held for both series. 5
