2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Saint Paul really does have a way of putting things into perspective! As I was preparing my homily for this weekend, I did as I always do I read the readings prescribed for the day; read them from a different translation of Scripture; read them again; pray on them; meditate on how the message relates to our life today; and then put the homily together. (And you thought I just got up and talked!) But today, as Saint Paul addresses the church in Corinth, he really hit me between the eyes. As often as I ve heard this passage and even spent an entire retreat meditating on it, I was moved by his message this week. Saint Paul says that he might not become too elated, because of the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me and keep me from being too elated. Three time I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. I ve looked at a couple of different translations because I was surprised by the word, elated. Instead, I found the word proud was more often used in other translations. I was kind of happy about that because I m not finding anything wrong with being elated. Now proud that s a little problem I deal with all the time. Admittedly, I like to be right. Father Michael tells me that when I know I m right and I don t want to argue the point any longer, my lower lip protrudes a bit until the other party (usually him) catches on. That little bit of pride that creeps into life is probably one of my biggest faults. Even my confessor is tired of hearing it! So while pride can be a good thing taking pride in one s work, in one s talents, in one s children the pride that becomes challenging is when we think all of these accomplishments are about us. I studied hard, so I m bright; I worked hard, so the accolades are due me; I did this, and I did that. That s where it s easy to fall into trouble. Yes, we have to acknowledge that our gifts are being put to good use, but when it s my accomplishment, energy, industry because I did it well then, therein lies the problem. Saint Paul reminds us that Christ says to us, My grace is sufficient for you. We could do nothing without the grace of Christ at work in us. Even those without faith are given abilities, talents, wisdom, intellect, but they think it s all theirs. Sometimes we do the same. But the truth is that for us as Christians, we are but stewards of God s gifts; we are among the ones who use these gifts to glorify God, not ourselves. It s all too easy to become like the Pharisee in the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican in the Temple I ve done all of this for you, God except we can too easily be looking into a mirror while addressing God! Saint Paul can enjoy a protruding lower lip this weekend as we hear those powerful words My grace is sufficient for you. Such words and reminders can keep us humble, put our gifts back into perspective, recognize that this life is not all about me. Rather, in hearing Saint Paul s words, we re reminded that what is given to us, shared with us, is not for ourselves, but for the glory of Him who is the giver of all good gifts. It s a real challenge to keep this in perspective, and it s a real challenge when the revelations of God s generosity to us knock us down a peg or two. It s not about always being right it s about being loving. It s not about what I m entitled to it s about how I can best use God s gifts for the sake of others. It s not about how smart I am, how articulate, how wonderful it s about how God is working in our lives and our need to be thankful to Him for it. So there s a little summer meditation for you! Keep the Lord in first place and that angel won t need to beat us up any more! Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

Thank you for your continued generosity to our parish. Our weekly budget for the parish is $11,900. WEDNESDAY VESPERS Beginning this week, there will not be Vespers on Wednesday evening. We will have conclude with the Benediction service, the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament, and simple reposition. Vespers will resume after Labor Day. In the meantime, please don t forget that adoration will continue through the summer. The Blessed Sacrament cannot be exposed and left alone in the chapel. In order to keep Wednesday adoration active, remember that you have to do your part to stay with the Lord, to visit with Him, and to pray for our world, our Church, and our parish community. 3

4 BAZAAR SPONSORSHIP COORDINATOR NEEDED This year not only marks our 50 th jubilee as a parish, but also our 25 th Annual Christmas Bazaar and Penny Sale! Are you eager to help us make this year s the biggest and most successful bazaar in Saint Kathryn history? If you are a people person with excellent communication skills who would enjoy being our ambassador to local businesses, then please contact Charlene at to discuss the possibility of joining our bazaar volunteer team as our sponsorship coordinator. This would entail going to local businesses and inviting them to sponsor our bazaar and receive from us a promotional package on bazaar weekend that would include being part of the centerfold of our bulletins, being advertised on placemats in the dining area, having their logos displayed on posters in the hall and on the property, etc. They donate to us to give our bazaar a boost, and we promote them abundantly a win-win! THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July Jubilee News 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Early registration for the academic year for religious education classes has ended and we are now in the first phase of late registration. Children already enrolled in the program received the registration forms at religious ed class. Forms are also available in the back of the church and in the office. Schedules are attached to the registration form. Please, detach the schedule and keep for your records. The full schedule will also be posted on the parish website. Grades 1-6, the opportunity for choosing a Group has passed as our classes are now filling up; students will be assigned to Group 1 or Group 2. Registration fees between June 1 and August 1 are $45.00/$90.00 per family. Registration after August 1 will be $50.00/$ per family. We have a lot to be excited about coming up later this year, which Father Joe mentioned in his letter last week. We have the Philippians Bible Study, a Study on Saint Catherine, and the much-anticipated return of Church Tours! We have so many marvelous stained-glass windows and Shines in our beautiful church, what a great way to learn more about them! Also, remember to save the date for our Jubilee Mass with Bishop Libasci on October 6 th! The first Jubilee Photo Directory Portrait Sessions will take place August 1-4. We have begun reserving appointments after Masses which will continue this weekend. Appointments can also be made through our website. Time slots are filling up fast, so we encourage any families with college-aged children to get your session booked before they head back to school, as our next dates will most likely not fall during their vacation. Our Jubilee Champagne Brunches have been a great success! We d like to thank everyone for coming and we d also like to thank this past week s hosts, the Jubilee Social Group and the Men of Saint Joseph for doing such a fabulous job! QUO VADIS DAYS Quo Vadis Days are opportunities for young men considering a call to the priesthood to interact with seminarians and priests as well as other young men who are thinking about priesthood to come together for fun, food, and fellowship. This year, they will take place from Monday, August 6, beginning at 5:00p.m. and concluding on Friday, August 10 at 1:00p.m. at Northeast Catholic College, 511 Kearsarge Mountain Road, Warner, NH. If you are a young man age 14-18, you are invited to attend the annual Quo Vadis Days camp to spend time with other young men your age looking at the Lord s call in your life. JULY 8, SONJA CORBITT COMING TO SAINT KATHRYN S Have you heard that, in collaboration with the Daughters of Eve, The Bible Study Evangelista, Sonja Corbitt will be coming to Saint Kathryn s? Join us for an evening of reflection on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. for a Love the Word Kick-off event with adoration, Evening Prayer, Music, and Confessions. On Saturday, September 22, Sonja will offer a retreat day consisting of three talks with reflection time from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. More information is found on the flyers in the back of the church. FAITH FACTS This week, we celebrate the memory of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha also known as the Lily of the Mohawks. She is the first Native American to be recognized as a saint in the Catholic Church, born in 1656 in Ossernenon, NY. Her mother was from the Algonquin tribe who was captured by the Mohawks and ended up marrying a Mohawk chief. Kateri contracted smallpox at 4 years old which severely scarred her skin. As a result, she often wore a blanket to hide her face. Even worse, during this smallpox epidemic, her entire family died. As a result, she was raised by an uncle who was chief of the Mohawk clan. Kateri was a skilled worker who was both diligent and patient. She rejected suitors, and was punished by being given more work. Instead, her industry caused her to work all the harder. At age 19, Kateri converted to the Catholic faith, vowed chastity, and professed perpetual virginity. As a result, she moved to a Christian native community in Montreal. Kateri, named after Saint Catherine of Siena, fasted and prayed for conversions. Sadly, just five years after her conversion to Catholicism, she died at age 24, on April 17, Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, She is the patroness of ecology and the environment, people in exile and Native Americans.

6 THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CHAMPAGNE BRUNCH HOSTS WANTED Our second Jubilee Champagne Brunch took place last weekend. Thanks to the Jubilee Social Task Group and the Men of Saint Joseph, it was another wonderful time of fellowship, delicious food, and laughs. Would your ministry like to host the next brunch in the fall? If interested, please contact Charlene or Jen in the office at SUMMER FOOD DRIVE Our summer food drive for the Food Pantry at Saint John s will begin on the weekend of July 8 and conclude on July 29. Bags will be available in the vestibule of the church with a shopping list. Please return the filled bags to the vestibule and we can take care of the rest. Summer can be a particularly difficult time, especially for children who usually have breakfast and lunch in school, so your help is very much needed to help our children stay fed and healthy. Thank you for your constant generosity to our biannual food drives. You help more than you know! SAINT KATHRYN RELIGIOUS GOODS This week, we came across some information that we d like to share with you concerning some recent research regarding trends and business information as it relates to religious goods store in the United States. What was most interesting was the listing of the top selling items across the country. Topping the list was religious medals. Second, was rosaries, and third, books. This is both interesting and heartening because these three categories have been our focus as far as quality and breadth of our product line since we opened our parish store. Our line of medals is from Bliss Manufacturing in Rhode Island (made in the USA!), and probably one of the premiere jewelry manufacturers in the country. They have been a family owned business for three generations. Our rosaries are made primarily by Bliss or hand made by one of our parishioners, and the quality is stunning in both cases. Lastly we have continued to expand our book selection and feel we can boast one of the best selections for miles around. We seem to be on the right track with our product focus and the responses we have received from you have only reinforced this. We will continue to strengthen all of these areas as well as continue to add new and interesting quality products. FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERS The Food Pantry is in desperate need of volunteers who would be able to help pick up food at the Food Bank in Manchester. If you are able to help with runs to the Food Bank on Tuesdays, please contact Janet Flores at Thank you! UPDATE ON THE FAMILY IN NEED: TWO GIRLS AND A SURPRISE BOY! The local refugee family expecting triplet daughters was surprised again! The mother did not deliver three girls, she delivered two girls and a boy! Thank you for all of your donations for this family over the past few weeks. From various sources, they have received a triplet stroller, car seats, infant girl clothing, and some diapers. Several parishioners have asked if there is anything else the family needs. With this latest surprise, the obvious thing is: infant boy clothing! Their son may be wearing pink for a while The family can also use more newborn diapers, size 3 diapers, size 6 diapers, underwear and socks for a 7-year-old girl, and size 5T girl clothing. EAGLE SCOUT CAR WASH One of our parishioners and newly confirmed members, Jared Todisco, is working on his Eagle Scout project which will be the construction of a créche for Presentation of Mary Academy. To accomplish this, Jared will coordinate a car wash on July (rain date: July 21-22) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Central Street, Route 111, here in Hudson at a cost of $8.00 per vehicle.
