2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I suppose I should begin this letter with an apology. My letter last week caused some concerns in a lot of areas for several of our parishioners. Because I spoke about the lack of ordinations this year and the difference in the vision of priesthood today vs. the vision of the priesthood before the 1980 s, some of our folks read my letter as if I were experiencing burnout or having some kind of spiritual crisis because I ended with the idea that sometimes my spiritual well feels a little dry. I just want to share with you that neither is true. Every aspect of my priesthood is fulfilling, and although I realize that I can t do all things and I can t be everything for everyone, I m trying to do my part to maintain and build our parish by taking good care of my own physical and spiritual life. After the letter was published, there were a dozen s on Monday morning asking me if my weight loss was because of stress or discontent. The only way to answer that question is to state the obvious it s because of neither of those reasons it s because I had gained way too much weight and was feeling more and more sluggish. At my doctor s appointment in February, he said he would be pleased if I could lose 15 pounds during the course of this year. Being the consummate overachiever, Type A, obsessive compulsive person that I am, as of today I m down 40. It s not a weight loss for bad reasons, but for the good so I can keep on serving you and the Church to the best of my ability. It means the addition of some different work on my part, taking time out from administration in particular (never from the celebration of Mass or the sacraments by the way) in order to stay strong and fit for service. So while I thank you for your concern, I can tell you unequivocally that there s nothing to worry about. I ll take whatever prayers you have to offer, but to worry about me in that way isn t necessary. On a different note, we will welcome a priest from the Diocese of Cameroon to our parish next weekend to present the annual missionary cooperative appeal. Father will be with us for the weekend and I know that you will be generous to his request. This will give me Saturday afternoon and Sunday to take a quick trip to New York to see the youngest of my sisters and a dear priest friend in the city. With that said, we will not pray the Rosary on July 1 as part of Operation Storm Heaven. We ll resume in August. Today helps us to step out of the Ordinary Time calendar for just a weekend as we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist. Of course, we all know how significant he is in the plan of salvation announcing the coming of the Messiah, pointing to Jesus as the Lamb of God, being among the first martyrs (even prior to the death of Jesus) who witness to Christ through their testimony to Him. And while we may cut that rather interesting portrait of John, we must remember that his message always pointed to Christ He must increase, while I must decrease. I know that I have to keep that quote in mind often. We are privileged to present six of our college bound students with scholarships this year. The ceremony will take place on Monday evening and their résumés read like a Who s Who among top achievers. Every one of these young people have been active in our church, each attends Mass weekly, each shines in his/her own way. And they are ours! We re so proud and we promise each of them our support and encouragement. So to sum up thank you again for your concern. All is well with our parish, with me, with our community, with God. We know that we will need to make some changes in staffing in the near future, but it is to allow us to maintain our programs and services as you deserve. Many of our programs are underwritten by your offering. In addition to supplies for the church (hosts, wine, vestment maintenance) and utilities (water, air conditioning or heat, electricity), we also have salaries, insurance, and benefits, such as retirement and health insurance for our employees. 3

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Early registration for the academic year for religious education classes has ended and we are now in the first phase of late registration. Children already enrolled in the program received the registration forms at religious ed class. Forms are also available in the back of the church and in the office. Schedules are attached to the registration form. Please, detach the schedule and keep for your records. The full schedule will also be posted on the parish website. Grades 1-6, the opportunity for choosing a Group has passed as our classes are now filling up; students will be assigned to Group 1 or Group 2. Registration fees between June 1 and August 1 are $45.00/$90.00 per family. Registration after August 1 will be $50.00/$ per family. JUBILEE T-SHIRTS By popular demand, T-shirts with our Jubilee logo will continue to be available for order in the parish office through the summer. Screen-printed women s T-shirts are $12, men s are $10, and polo shirts with an embroidered logo are $25. T-shirts are white; polo shirts may be ordered in Kelly green, red, or royal blue. Proceeds will go towards Jubilee-related events.

Our Hospitality Ministry may be just the right fit! We are in need of more greeters to be the welcoming face to all parishioner and visitors to Saint Kathryn s at our weekend Masses. We have a particular need for at least one more greeter for the 8:30 a.m. Sunday Mass, but we could also use more help for the 10:30 a.m., and 6:30 p.m. Masses as well. QUO VADIS DAYS Quo Vadis Days are opportunities for young men considering a call to the priesthood to interact with seminarians and priests as well as other young men who are thinking about priesthood to come together for fun, food, and fellowship. This year, they will take place from Monday, August 6, beginning at 5:00p.m. and concluding on Friday, August 10 at 1:00p.m. at Northeast Catholic College, 511 Kearsarge Mountain Road, Warner, NH. If you are a young man age 14-18, you are invited to attend the annual Quo Vadis Days camp to spend time with other young men your age looking at the Lord s call in your life. Quo Vadis Days are led by priests and seminarians of the diocese and includes a full schedule: sports, games, hiking, swimming, daily Mass, prayer, and opportunities to grow in friendship with the Lord and with each other. SONJA CORBITT COMING TO SAINT KATHRYN S Have you heard that, in collaboration with the Daughters of Eve, The Bible Study Evangelista, Sonja Corbitt will be coming to Saint Kathryn s? Join us for an evening of reflection on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. for a Love the Word Kick-off event with adoration, Evening Prayer, Music, and Confessions. On Saturday, September 22, Sonja will offer a retreat day consisting of three talks with reflection time from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. More information is found on the flyers in the back of the church. VOCATION ROSARY Who do we have in formation from the parish? Well, we have Sister Athanasius Munroe, OP (Sarah); Sister Faustina Kolbe Burda, DMN (Jennifer); and Sister Maria Mechtilde Ainley, OSB (Elena). This is a great gift to and from our parish, but we have no one in formation for the priesthood or diaconate. Come on, fellas! The Lord is calling some of you why not begin to discern? For years, we have had parishioners volunteer to pray the rosary for vocations. Would you be willing to take the Vocation Rosary home for a week and pray for the men and women from our parish in formation and for an increase of vocations? If so, please contact Deacon Ray at JUNE CHAMPAGNE BRUNCH Today s the day! This is our final champagne brunch before summer break! This time, our Jubilee Social Task Group will be hosting the event with meals prepared by the Men of Saint Joseph. Once again, there will be a brunch following the 8:30 a.m. Mass today as well as one following the 10:30 a.m. Mass. We re sorry that we won t have any tickets available at the door this time around. If you missed your chance for this brunch, they will return in the fall. And for those of you who heard about the incredible meal in May, we can pretty much guarantee the same will be true this weekend. So here s the good news we re going to keep them going during the Jubilee Year, so there will be lots of opportunities ahead to join us! 5

6 THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST SUMMER FOOD DRIVE Our summer food drive for the Food Pantry at Saint John s will begin on the weekend of July 8 and conclude on July 29. Bags will be available in the vestibule of the church with a shopping list. Please return the filled bags to the vestibule and we can take care of the rest. Summer can be a particularly difficult time, especially for children who usually have breakfast and lunch in school, so your help is very much needed to help our children stay fed and healthy. Thank you for your constant generosity to our biannual food drives. You help more than you know! FAITH FACTS Those of you who were parishioners during the building of the new church will already know this little bit of history, but with the number of new parishioners among us, you may not be aware that many of the appointments in our church were actually obtained from another church that was closed. Did you know that our stained glass windows, the reredos (the back altar ), the tabernacle, and the present shrines of Our Lady and Saint Joseph were taken from the former Saint Peter s Church in New Haven, CT? Originally, the reredos bore a central image of Saint Peter and angels were painted on each of the side panels. Additionally, the Shrine of Divine Mercy, with the statues of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina and Saint Faustina, was created from a portion of a confessional from the former Saint Patrick s Church in Manchester. The Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa was crafted by former parishioner Ray Lizotte. If you ve ever wondered why our new church has the feel of tradition it s because so many of our surroundings come to us from an older church! FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERS The Food Pantry is in desperate need of volunteers who would be able to help pick up food at the Food Bank in Manchester. If you are able to help with runs to the Food Bank on Tuesdays, please contact Janet Flores at Thank you! MISSIONARY COOP APPEAL We will welcome our missionary coop speaker to Saint Kathryn s next weekend. Father Ghenghan Mbinkar from Kumbo in the Diocese of Cameroon will be with us to make his appeal for our financial and prayerful support. Please be as generous as your means will allow. FAMILY IN NEED A local family has been surprised and blessed by triplet daughters! Are you able to donate a stroller for newborn triplets? The family is also in need of newborn diapers, size 3 diapers, size 6 diapers, underwear and socks for a 7-year-old girl, and size 5T girl clothing. If you are able to help, please call the parish office at WEDNESDAY VESPERS This week will be our final sung Vespers for the summer. Sung Vespers will return after Labor Day in September. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays will continue as usual, but there will be simple reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. How will this look? At 6:50 p.m., Father Joe or Deacon Ray will come into the chapel, begin with the prayer You have given them bread from heaven, and then bless the people with the Blessed Sacrament. This will be followed by the Divine Praises and reposition of the Blessed Sacrament. In preparation for the Fourth of July, please be advised that the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the morning (5:30-8:15 a.m. in the Chapel), but there will not be adoration in the afternoon or evening of the Fourth of July. The Sacrament should also be received prior to surgery.
