2 SAINT KATHRYN PARISH Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, To begin this week, I d like to thank the young people from Presentation of Mary Academy who joined us last weekend and shared their experiences of life at PMA. To Carlo, Rose, Ruby, and Reagan thank you for making such a wonderful presentation to our parish community. You each did a wonderful job! Saint Kathryn s enjoys a wonderful relationship with PMA and we have so many opportunities to share in their life. Over the years and into the present, we ve also had several parishioners who are part of the Notre Dame Academy in Tyngsboro. These students have, as well, been an important part of our community, serving as catechists, participants in Workcamp and the Royal Kids Family Camp, servers, and in a variety of volunteer positions here at the parish (including part of the Irish Dance Troupe). We have been so blessed by both schools, and so it s important to be able to acknowledge these young men and women who are already fully engaged in the life of our parish community. We are very, very blessed that all of these students in one way or another are integrating their quality education into the life of our parish community. Thank you! It dawned on me when the children were speaking that more than half of my life was involved in Catholic education, with twelve years as a Catholic school student, four more years of seminary, two years of philosophy and pre-theology, and then fourteen years as a Catholic school educator. Yes, that s thirty-two years in the system! I don t regret a moment of that time (all right maybe there were some regrets in high school, but that s a story for another day ) because the support and formation that I received, even in the somewhat different days of the 1970 s, were still wonderful days. I m not sure that many people can say that they are still in touch with many people from elementary school, but 35 out of 50 of us who graduated from eighth grade together are still friends and in regular communication (yes, even beyond Facebook!). I can only hope that the young people who joined us will be able to say the same so many years after they complete their formal Catholic education. I know it may seem premature, but start thinking about Lent! Ash Wednesday is on March 1 st, and there will be many, many spiritual opportunities available during this holy season. There will be two Masses each weekday (Monday through Friday), so we ll need some additional lectors and servers. There will be adoration, confessions, and Vespers each Sunday from the First Sunday of Lent through Divine Mercy Sunday (Easter Sunday, included). Confessions will be heard daily after the morning Masses and before the evening Masses, each and every day. Lectio: Prayer is scheduled for Lent in the hope that all of us will be able to intensify our prayer life during this time. We ll also have Vianney brought to the parish on March 11 th (make sure you see the announcement about this in today s bulletin). There will also be Stations of the Cross on Fridays after both Masses (except on First Friday), and Tenebrae during Holy Week. And mark your calendar now so you can attend the whole Triduum. You ll want to really celebrate the Triduum after so much spiritual growth during Lent! I m looking forward to seeing you at the Ministry Fair this weekend (and thank you to Boy Scout Troop 252 for putting on the pancake breakfast!). I m continually surprised by the number of ministry opportunities that we have at Saint Kathryn s and the ever-growing ministries that we are able to provide. As long as each of them is for the honor and glory of God, they will continue to grow! Until next week.god bless! Father Joe 2

ROYAL FAMILY KIDS CAMP Royal Family Kids is looking for men and women willing to create life-changing moments for children of abuse and neglect. By volunteering to take a vacation that matters to kids in foster care (July 30-Aug. 4, 2017), you can share God's unconditional love to kids who need it most. A few of our parishioners have answered the call and say it is an amazing life-changing experience. For more information contact Tina Murguia at tinamarie.murguia@gmail.com, David Wilder at D.Wilder@f5.com, or visit rfk.org. CHOIR REHEARSALS BEGIN AGAIN Choir rehearsals for our 10:30 Mass take place on Wednesdays from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the church. Soprano, alto, tenor, and bass we need you all! As we prepare for Lent, the Triduum, Easter, and Tenebrae, we are looking for people from high school through senior citizens who can commit to weekly rehearsals and Sunday mornings when the choir sings an anthem. For more information, please contact Larry Franchitto, Jerry Casavant, or Father Joe. Yes, it s a lot of work, and a big commitment, but we have a great time with music and fellowship! We can only accept new members until March 1 st, so if you are thinking of joining us, please do so sooner rather than later. THE CHALICE AT MASS The chalice will be suspended at all Masses until Holy Thursday during cold and flu season. Knowing that even low-gluten hosts cannot be tolerated for some, there will be a chalice available at Father Joe s station. Please indicate as you come forward in the Communion line that you must receive from the chalice. There will not be much in the chalice, so please receive from the chalice mindful that others may be behind you. Remember: the Eucharist is always complete whether we receive under one form or two. ON TODAY S BULLETIN COVER You ll easily recognize this grotto scene from our own church! And don t the flowers give you a bit of a desire for spring? It s coming...have no fear! This week, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11 th. In this apparition, which took place on February 11, 1858, Our Lady revealed herself to Bernadette Soubirous, a peasant girl. In the final apparition, Our Lady called herself the Immaculate Conception. 4

5 FEBRUARY 5, 2017 STEUBENVILLE EAST The date is set! July 14-16, 2017 is the time for Steubenville East an experience that you won t want to miss. Plan to join thousands of other young people (those who have graduated from eighth grade through those who have graduated from high school) for a life-changing three days. Steubenville East will take place at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell and will feature great speakers and musicians, including Chris Mueller, Jon Niven, Father Jose Robles-Sanchez, Leah Darrow, Joel Stepanek, and Kelly Colangelo. For those from our parish who have attended in the past, you know that this is a weekend that has been fun, informative, and uplifting. If you re a teen (or would like to be an adult chaperone) and want a spiritual boost, this is an opportunity for you. Interested in learning more? Please contact Father Joe at frjoe@stkathryns.org. LECTIO: PRAYER In the last year, we ve delved into two experiences of Lectio with Lectio: Eucharist and Lectio: Peter. This winter, we ll add yet another dimension to our experience of Lectio with Lectio: Prayer. We ll be exposed in a new way to an ancient tradition in our Church known as Lectio Divina, which is Latin for Holy Reading. In this, we ll have an opportunity to read the Sacred Scriptures and discover what treasures they possess. In this six-week series, we ll cover the following topics: February 23 Prayer: An Intimate Dialogue March 2 Guigo s Ladder: A Way of Ascent March 9 Lectio and Meditatio: Climbing the First Rungs March 16 Oratio: Conversation with God March 23 Contemplatio: The Gaze of Love March 30 Resolutio: Putting Love into Action Sessions will be held from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 noon and again from 7:45-9:15 p.m. in Hall B. Pre-registration is helpful but not required. BABY BOTTLE BENEFIT Don t forget that our Baby Bottle Benefit for CareNet is taking place right now! Take one of the baby bottles from the back of the church, fill it with your loose change, and return it to the church next weekend. You d be surprised how our loose change can help so many women in difficult pregnancies! VIANNEY We are proud to welcome Leonardo Defilippis to Saint Kathryn s on Saturday, March 11th, for a 7:00 p.m. performance of Vianney a one-man show based on the life of Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars. From their website, we are reminded: Leonardo Defilippis one-man religious theater production, Vianney, opens amidst the chaos of the French Revolution. This period in French history mirrors the secularization, materialism, and anti-religious sentiment of our own day. Because of these parallels, Vianney is a powerful tool for the evangelization of our contemporary culture. Against this dramatic backdrop, a simple peasant priest enters Ars. This backwater town is a place where no one cares much about their faith. They don t expect much out of John Vianney either, but then the impossible begins to happen. Through John s example, love, and sacrifice, the townspeople begin to change. This is a story of perseverance against all odds. It is the story of a humble pastor with a passion for souls. He ll do anything to save a sinner. Played with Leonardo s warmth, humor, and insight, Saint John Vianney is a man with whom audiences fall in love. It is my prayer that when people meet John Vianney, they will be transformed by his life, story and message, says Leonardo Defilippis. I know that young men looking for a radical way of serving God will be drawn to the priesthood through his example. Over the last two decades, thousands of people have seen Vianney. Audiences have grown closer to Christ, and many young men have indeed discerned vocations to the religious life. Our production incorporates an original musical score by composer Randall DeBruyn. With our state-of-theart technology, we project a full cast of characters onto a screen, making the story come alive in a multimedia experience. Above all, Leonardo s portrayal brings audiences to tears, laughter, and a deep experience of the presence of God in our midst. Tickets will be available for purchase beginning February 15 th from the parish office at a cost of $25.00/ person for the first four rows and $20.00/person for rows 5 and beyond (as well as seating on the Transept Chapel side). For families (parents and up to 4 children), there is a maximum $50.00/family. Don t wait to get your tickets! We are offering this throughout the diocese, and only a limited number of tickets can be sold! 5
