2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Today is the day! Several of our parishioners and I will be leaving our parking lot today for our parish trip to Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria at 4:00 p.m. It seems like yesterday that we just started talking about it, and it s already here! Please keep us in your prayers while we travel. We expect to be able to post daily on our Facebook page with our adventures and as a bit of a travelogue so you can participate at least vicariously. While we re there, we re going to scout out Oberammergau, the site of the world famous Passion Play to take place there in Undoubtedly, we ll have an introductory meeting about the possibility of going in 2020, but there will be a lot of factors at stake. (The first glance is exciting, but we want to look at the whole package, not just the one day for the play.) Men of the parish how long has it been since you ve been on retreat, if ever? Did you know that each year a group of men get together for a weekend retreat at the Shiloh Retreat Center in Jefferson, NH? This year, the retreat is scheduled for October Under the direction of Deacon John Castelot, the theme of the retreat is Daring Greatly. Many of the Men of Saint Joseph know Deacon John well from his participation in our group, and you can be assured of a spiritually enriching weekend with good insights to reflect upon. Brochures are available in the narthex of the church on the tables with complete information. Think about it, fellows. A weekend retreat with other men of the parish in which to reflect on your faith together, to be able to talk about the stuff that really matters, and to perhaps come to a newer and deeper realization that faith in Jesus Christ is manly business could be just the thing that is needed to boost your faith. Think about it. Speaking of retreat experiences, our young people who attended Steubenville East this summer are still talking about it. One of our parishioners, Hannah Bowen, wrote to say, I really enjoyed going to Steubenville East! This is a great conference for any teen who wants to feel alive in Christ and alive in their faith. Seeing all of the people gathered together in worship is truly wonderful. I would recommend this to anyone who is able to go. I am grateful to St. Kathryn's for allowing me to have this experience. Another parishioner, Kristyn Demers, wrote to say, Since this was my second year attending Steubenville East, I was very excited to experience the excitement, love, and power of God I had received last year. However, my experience this year was a lot different. My participation in Eucharistic Adoration on Friday led to a stronger outcome for the weekend. I was finally able to truly recognize Jesus in the Eucharist. On Saturday evening, during the Eucharistic Adoration procession, I remembered this and I placed myself at the feet of Jesus. This was an amazing and life changing moment for me. The excitement of thousands of my peers during this weekend encouraged me to spread our faith throughout the community, without being afraid of what others might think. I strongly encourage other young adults to make the decision to go to Steubenville East next year. You never know what might be revealed to you. Thank you again for sending us to Steubenville! Those kinds of testimonies, as well as the one we published from Margaret St. Onge a while back, really speak to the need of the human heart to encounter God. We ll have some opportunities as a parish over these next few years to grow in our relationship with God through some parish missions that we are scheduling. We re also looking at what we can continue to do to encourage our teens to participate in Steubenville East next year (and chaperones too) so that parishioners of all ages can experience the Lord in a new way. So we ve talked about the men, about our teens, hopefully we ll have something coming soon for our elementary school children, but hmmm, someone s missing! Ladies that s you! Please see a very important announcement in today s bulletin regarding the start of a women s ministry called Daughters of Eve. With Mary, the New Eve, as a model for faith, we re praying that many women of our parish will come together to pray and to share. Once this group comes together, the women will be able to look at a variety of opportunities for spiritual growth as well. And for those of you who know Karen Wilder, you know that you re in good hands! Lots to think about and lots to do. Praise God! Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. At each meeting, they repeat the words of their oath: On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to my God and my country and to obey the Scout law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. Troop 252, sponsored by Saint Kathryn s, meets every Tuesday evening during the school year from 7:00-8:30 p.m. The Scout Law reminds the scouts that a scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Who wouldn t want to see those qualities in the young men of today? For more information, please come down to the parish hall on September 19 th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and hear more about what scouting might be able to offer to your children! Cub Scouts is open to boys ages 5-10; Boy Scouts is open to boys ages 11-17; Venturing is open to boys and girls ages DAUGHTERS OF EVE/ WOMEN S MINISTRY The Daughters of Eve is a new initiative in our parish for women who want to strive to become like Mary with the encouragement and support of other women. We can never say that we have learned everything there is to know about our faith even the greatest scholars and doctors of the Church would not presume to say that! Why not commit yourself to one or both of these series as we continue to grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord, of the Catholic faith, and of our Church? ALZHEIMER S DISCUSSION Saint Kathryn s Veterans Organization will sponsor an Alzheimer s/dementia Panel and Forum Discussion on Saturday, September 30 th at 1:30 p.m. in the parish hall. Please join us for this informative presentation! COFFEE AND DONUTS Sign ups for coffee and donuts this year will take place this weekend after the Masses. Perhaps your family, a few friends, or a parish group to which you belong would be willing to host a weekend. It s easy; it s helpful; it s fun! Plan on it now! 6 FAITH FACTS Hidden in the vestibule of the Transept Chapel is a window often overlooked by worshippers that of the pelican feeding her young. For many, it appears as an odd symbol in our Catholic tradition, and yet it speaks volumes to us of a great spiritual reality. The symbol is rooted in a pre- Christian legend which noted that in time of famine, a mother pelican would feed her young by wounding herself, striking her breast with the beak to feed them with her own blood to avoid starvation. It s easy to see how the early Church adapted this to symbolize the Lord Jesus. The pelican symbolizes Jesus the Redeemer who gave His life for our redemption and the atonement He made with the Father through His passion and death. As those who have been dead to sin, we have found new life through the Blood of Christ. Jesus continues to feed us with His Body and Blood in the Eucharist. The symbol of the pelican has traditionally been closely connected with the altar. When tabernacles were suspended over the altar, they were often shaped like pelicans. Likewise, Saint Thomas Aquinas in his hymn Adoro Te, Devote writes Like what tender tales tell of the Pelican Bathe me, Jesus Lord, in what Thy Boson ran Blood that but one drop of has the pow r to win All the world forgiveness of its world of sin. The image of the pelican is a strong reminder of Our Lord, who suffered and died for us to give us eternal life and who nourishes us on our pilgrim way with the Eucharist. ESCAPE ROOM Youth! Join us on Sunday, September 24 when we visit the Escape Room in Nashua! The date/time is Sunday, September 24 th at 2:00 p.m. (meet there no later than 1:40 or we can commute from Saint Kathryn s). We will be back at Saint Kathryn s by 3:45-4:00 p.m. Get locked in a room for an hour and you have to escape by solving a series of puzzles and/or clues. Those who have been before have found it both fun and challenging. We got a special 20% off deal, so the cost is only $20 per person. Please let Mr. Wilder know ASAP at dwilder@f5.com. Website:
