1 PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Through compassion, with hope, and in truth, we give Jesus our hearts, on fire with love for the Eucharist. We pray to be a community that is reconciling and forgiving; faithful to the Church s teachings; full of faith, hope, and love; is just and seeks justice; is alive to the needs of others; and is living out its call to proclaim the Good News, so that all peoples may come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, Yesterday Today and Forever. 4 Dracut Road, Hudson, NH Tel (603) Fax (603)

2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, These last couple of weeks have been difficult for us yet again as the Church. The news that is widespread over the former Cardinal McCarrick and inappropriate behavior at Saint John s Seminary have been difficult enough to hear, but the added Attorney General s report from Pennsylvania is devastating. I m sure you ve had the same thoughts as me just as we seem to be getting strong after the clergy abuse scandal revealed in 2002, these new reports can almost shatter all the good that has been done in these 16 years. While sometimes it seems that the preventative measures that the Church in the United States has put in place have been effective, another scandal reveals that either not all of the measures are being followed or additional measures need to be enacted. It s kind of interesting that, although I didn t live at the seminary where I studied, many of my friends did. Because I was a Capuchin at the time, I lived in community while those studying for any number of dioceses lived in the seminary building. Perhaps the times were different, but to the best of my knowledge, nothing inappropriate was going on in the friary. In speaking with some of my classmates who were ordained for dioceses, both in 2002 and now, they too were unaware of any impropriety. Maybe it s just the guys that I used to hang around with, but all of us have the same reaction surprise, incredulity, sadness. I would venture a guess that perhaps some men were not living as they were called to live, but none of my friends were even aware of it. This feels like yet another blow to the Church and to the priesthood. Yes, ours is a lofty vocation, and yes, we should be held to a higher standard. If we are going to preach as the moral compass for the faithful, I believe that we had better be living it! If we re going to be authentic in our proclamation of the Gospel, not just spouting words in a homily, but actually being examples of what we preach, then that standard of the Gospel life has to be lived out first by us so that the faithful can follow. The word that keeps coming to mind for me is integrity. If the Word of God we preach and the sacraments we share are to have any meaning, it has to be deeply integrated into the life of the priest first so that it can be shared with the faithful. Do I always live that Gospel perfectly? Of course not. There are days that the priestly life is a challenge; there are days when the Gospel message is difficult to live out. Every priest faces this challenge and please God, most of us struggle through our own sins and temptations so that we can be good priests. Some days it s easier than others. Admittedly, the words of the concluding prayer of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy have been striking me right to the heart of late: that we may not become despondent. Despair is not of God, and yet there are times that my own view of things can enter into that realm. That s why the words that follow in that prayer, but with great confidence, we submit ourselves to your holy will, which is love and mercy itself become so important. It s easy to be beaten down, and thankfully, so many of our parishioners have offered words of encouragement and support to me and to all priests. That simple gesture has given me strength and courage moving forward. It doesn t make the strange looks that cynical Catholics or people outside the Church will give when we re out in public any easier, but there is a sense that the folks back at home are still praying for their priests. How I wish I didn t have to write this letter this week at least not with this topic but it s important for you to know that your words and prayers have a great effect on me. I am more grateful than ever before for them because these latest scandals have rocked my world too. But with God s grace, I know we can continue to grow strong and I know that the faith will continue to grow in the hearts of us all. I am sorry that such revelations have challenged the faith of so many. I m sorry for those priests who have betrayed the trust of so many. I m sorry that formation and priestly fraternity did not direct us to the higher goal of heaven. I m sorry that you, the faithful, and we, the priests, have to carry this cross yet again. But together, as we pray for the victims and for one another, let us move toward new life and resurrection within our Church. Until next week...god bless! Father Joe 2

5 LITURGICAL MINISTRIES We will hold a training session for new lectors and new extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Each of these sessions will cover the following information: The Theology of Lay Liturgical Ministry The Evolution of the Ministry of Reading (or Ministry of Holy Communion) The Nuts and Bolts of It All What Do I Do? Also, there will be a training session for altar servers on September 13 th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the church. CHURCH TOURS When our church first opened in August of 2000, tours were given regularly as a part of our introduction to the new church. Now, after eighteen years, our church remains the same, but many people may not know our history, our patrimony, and the many details that are hidden in our church that nevertheless tell our story. Each month (except during Advent and Lent), we will offer a tour on a Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and describe where many of the things you see in our church came from, the significance of religious articles you will see in our church, the story of icons, windows, and liturgical appointments. Join Father Joe for our first tour which will take place on Sunday, October 14 th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Perhaps you ll plan to join us for either this gathering or any one of a number to follow in our Jubilee Year. Space for each tour is limited, so please call the office at to register for the October 14 th tour. A tour geared for younger children will be offered at separate times. NEW OFFICE HOURS After many years, our parish office hours will change! Beginning on September 4 th, the parish office hours will be from 9:00 a.m. until noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We thank you for your understanding in this matter. Please note that the office hours will remain the same through the month of August (8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday). AUGUST 26, ADULT FAITH FORMATION We are very excited to announce the topics for adult faith formation for the fall of 2018 and the spring of In the fall, we will take the time to delve into the Gospel of Saint Mark which is the Gospel we are hearing for the remainder of the liturgical year. In fourteen weeks, we will consider the following themes: September 20 Saint Mark the Evangelist September 27 Prepare the Way of the Lord October 11 Come Follow Behind Me October 18 Feasting and Fasting October 25 Binding the Strong Man November 1 The Parable of the Sower November 15 Faith, Not Fear November 29 The Mystery of the Bread December 6 The Way of Discipleship December 13 Jesus and the Temple January 3 Signs of the End January 10 The Servant of the Lord January 17 Jesus Suffering, Death, and Resurrection January 24 Questions and Answers Our spring adult faith formation series will focus on Saint Paul s Letter to the Philippians with topics covering: March 7 Paul and the Philippians March 14 Partnership in the Gospel March 21 Friendship in Christ March 28 The Mind of Christ April4 Imitatio of Christ April 11 All Things in Christ If you participated in last year s series, you know we were going to study Philippians in the fall; however, since it is such a short study, we thought it better to do the shorter series when there is a potential of bad weather than try to make up the longer study in the spring. We will be ordering the study guides for those who wish to participate in the course (not required, but helpful). When we learn the cost of the guides, we will let you know what it is. The guides will not be required for participation, but once the books are ordered, we will not be able to get them at the reduced bulk price after the sessions have begun. Pre-registration is required through the office for both sessions. Please let Charlene or Jennifer know if you want the books as well. Morning and evening sessions will be held for both series.
