November 5, 2017 ORDER OF WORSHIP ALL SAINTS SUNDAY The beginning of the opening voluntary is a call to silent, personal meditation. Please silence all electronic devices as we prepare our hearts and minds to worship God. 10:00 a.m. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Blessed are all your saints, O God, who have traveled over the tempestuous seas of this mortal life, and have made the harbor of peace and felicity. Watch over us who are still on our dangerous voyage and forgive us our shortcomings and offenses; remember such as lie exposed to the rough storms of trouble and temptations. Frail is our vessel, and the ocean is wide; but as in your mercy you have set our course, so steer the vessel of our life toward the everlasting shore of peace, and bring us at last to the quiet haven of our heart s desire, where you, O our God, are blessed and live and reign forever and ever. OPENING VOLUNTARY Cortège et Litanie Marcel Dupré ( ) INTROIT Iain Quinn (b. 1973) KYRIE ELEISON James MacMillan (b. 1959) The Lord is glorious in his saints: Come let us adore him. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever; Amen. CALL TO WORSHIP Minister: People: Minister: They are before the throne of God and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. *HYMN 526 For All the Saints SINE NOMINE Congregation: stanzas 1, 2, 3 Choir: interlude Congregation: stanza 4
PROMISE OF THE GOSPEL FIRST LESSON Revelation 7:9-17 (p. 249) *GLORIA PATRI Laud and honor to the Father, Laud and honor to the Son, Laud and honor to the Spirit, Ever three and ever one; One in might and one in glory, While unending ages run. WESTMINSTER ABBEY (Hymn 416) SECOND LESSON Matthew 5:1-12 (p. 4) CHURCH SCHOOL ANTHEM Cantate jubilate! Let us sing for joy to the Lord. Cantate jubilate! Let us worship the Lord with a song. Sing a song of praise this special day, come kneel before the Lord. With a might voice let us rejoice, cantate jubilate! Jeff Reeves (b. 1960) *THE PEACE Minister: As a forgiven people, let us share Christ s peace with one another. The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. ASK. SEEK. KNOCK. Margaret Spencer After the anthem, children through fifth grade may process to the Strouse Building to meet for the Gathering. SERMON My Lord, What a Mourning! My Lord, What a Morning! Ms. Jarvis Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. I John 3:2 WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION By the guidance you have given to those in doubt and trouble, by the courage you have restored to the fearful and the strength you have imparted to the weak, by the comfort you have bestowed upon the sorrowful and the hope you have kindled in sad hearts, by the working of your Holy Spirit among your saints, help us now to hear your Word and to be your faithful disciples to our life s end, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
*HYMN Jerusalem, My Happy Home LAND OF REST OFFERING OFFERTORY ANTHEM Give us the wings of faith to rise within the veil, and see the saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be. We ask them, whence their victory came: they, with one united breath, ascribe the conquest to the lamb, their triumph to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod, his zeal inspired their breast; and following their incarnate God, they reached the promised rest. Ernest Bullock ( ) SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER INVITATION WORDS OF INSTITUTION THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Minister: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up unto the Lord. Minister: Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People: It is meet and right so to do.
SANCTUS MacMillan *HYMN Ye Holy Angels Bright DARWALL Your offerings to the Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry Food Cupboard will be received during the singing of this hymn. Prayers concluding with the Lord s Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE COMMUNION ANTHEM A Child s Prayer MacMillan Welcome Jesu, deep in my soul forever stay, joy and love my heart are filling on this glad Communion day. PRAYER

Music and Arts at PCCH We may not always appreciate how central music is to worship but Martin Luther did, and this week seems like a particularly good time to remember that. In reading about the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, I came upon this quote from Luther: A schoolmaster ought to have skill in music, or I would not regard him; neither should we ordain young men to be preachers [or women it s 2017], unless they have been well exercised in music. Fortunately, we do have preachers who recognize this, and have helped build one of the most remarkable music and arts programs in the area. That program is central both to our worship service each week and to our mission outreach. How many of us have been drawn to PCCH because of its music whether that was Mark Anderson or Ken Lovett playing the organ, Dan Spratlan s excellent choir or one of the many musical groups that makes our sanctuary its home? Music fills our hearts and the quality of our music helps fill our pews, too. Let s not overlook the many artists in our congregation who share their work and help draw other artists to shows in Widener Hall like the one we will see this weekend. Play readings both entertain and inform us. They help bring us together but also connect us with others in the community. Our pledges make this possible. They pay our staff, pay our soloists, and make our church an attractive and welcoming place for us and for those who visit. Please consider raising your pledge by 1% of your household income. But if that doesn t move you, here is another quote from Luther that makes the point perhaps a little more bluntly than Cindy would: He must be a coarse clod and not worthy of hearing such charming music, who does not delight in this, and is not moved by such a marvel. He should rather listen to the donkey braying...or the barking of dogs and pigs, than to such music. With your continued support, all of us can, as the psalmist says, Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Mark Bernstein MUSIC ATTRIBUTIONS: Hymns, anthems and texts reproduced with permission CCLI.
