2 2 Sunday, June 19, 2016 Parish Announcements MATTHEW KELLY: DECISION POINT Next Session is June 20. Monday Evening, 6:30-8:00 I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. (Romans 7:19) What does St. Paul mean by this? He means that we all naturally want to be happy but sometimes we find ourselves doing things that don t help us become the best-version-of-ourselves. We don t always choose virtue; we don t always choose self-control. In Episode 2, we ll take a look at what gets in the way, how we get deceived so easily, and what the key factors are in the culture that are determined to hold us back in our goal to be all that God created us to be. WHAT S HOLDING US BACK? Today s secular culture lures us onto the wrong path. It works to replace the foundation of our faith with: a new foundation built on the altar of Individualism to grow our self-centeredness; A philosophy of selfishness whose fruits are greed and self-centeredness. What s in it for me? a foundation of Hedonism to put pleasure before virtue; A philosophy placing pleasure above all and whose fruits are laziness, gluttony, and lust. If it feels good, do it. a foundation of Minimalism so we can get by with the very least version of ourselves; A Minimalist seeks to exert the minimum effort but expects the maximum reward. What s the least I can do to get by? and a foundation of Relativism so we can deny Truth for the sake of political correctness. A philosophy declaring there to be no absolute Truth and whose fruits are disorientation, confusion, and hopelessness. What s true for you may not necessarily be true for me. I m okay, you re okay. Let us reject the world s vision for our lives and its broken philosophies. What our souls are truly thirsty for are: truth, beauty, and goodness. The philosophies the world wants to pass off to us are deficient in all three. So, to the extent that the world s culture has invaded our hearts, let us tear it out of our hearts and replace it with Truth, Beauty, and Goodness! ~ St. Joseph Marello Adult Formation Catechesis Ministry ~ Above information adapted from Decision Point by Matthew Kelly.
3 Parish Announcements Sunday, June 19, Second Collection for June 25 & 26: Peter s Pence Collection (Collection for the Holy Father) Next weekend our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. Even in spiritual things let us be satisfied with what the Lord is pleased to give us, without unduly attaching ourselves to sensible fervor, or desiring spiritual consolations. - St. Joseph Marello The St. Joseph Marello Knights of Columbus is offering an $1,100 scholarship (renewable for four years) to the most qualified high school senior. If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. - Luke 9:23 Lighthouse Book of the Week: Facing Your Fears Mark Hart uses Scripture and his experience of surviving an earthquake to share how we can master our fears. He also reveals how our fears will pursue us if we don t meet them head on. Mark encourages us to not only face the proverbial giants in our lives but to slay them as David did Goliath, thereby finding freedom in Christ.
