OFFICE OF THE BISHOP M EMO TO: FROM: All Pastors Bishop Nickless DATE: 20 February 2019 RE: Special Collection on the First Sunday in Lent - March 10, 2019 Aid to Global Churches (combined collection for Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Africa) Dear brothers, Attached is a letter expressing my support for the upcoming special collection, which will also appear in the Globe in the March 7 edition. Please remind your parishioners of this collection and share with them my support in some suitable way. Additional information and resources for each of the collections we are combining can be found at the website A suggested bulletin announcement is also attached. Thank you for your dedication in the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. Especially during this upcoming season of Lent, you are all in my daily prayers. May our most gracious Lady and St. Joseph intercede for us in all our efforts. DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712)
OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Lent, 2019 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The season of Lent is marked by our recommitment and more conscious discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. With these spiritual tools, we begin again to pursue our highest vocation and desire to be raised with Christ into Heaven. The ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday are a symbolic sharing in Christ s saving Passion; only in Him is the possibility of our redemption. On the First Sunday of Lent, we also have an opportunity to participate in the special collection to benefit the Church in the neediest areas of the world, especially in Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Your generous prayers and your gifts to this collection will help build churches and schools, train and educate priests and laypeople, publish Catholic newspapers, sustain orphanages, evangelize and catechize children and adults, and provide scholarships to Catholic students. Your prayerful solidarity makes a real difference to so many faithful attempting to build up the Church, either again or for the first time, in Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Thank you for your generosity. Please continue to pray for me, and for all priests, especially in this season of Lent. Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City Suggested bulletin announcement, Feb 24 / Mar 3: On the First Sunday of Lent, you are invited to participate in the special collection to benefit the Church in Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. You can help build churches and schools, train and educate priests and laypeople, publish Catholic newspapers, sustain orphanages, evangelize and catechize children and adults, and provide scholarships to Catholic students. Make a difference in building up the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America. DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712)

MASS FOR THE RENEWAL OF THE CHURCH Thursday, February 28, 2019
The suggested texts for the Mass are III. For Various Occasions, 38. For the Forgiveness of Sins, options A or B. Entrance Entrance Antiphon You have mercy on all, O Lord, and despise nothing that you have made. You overlook people s sins, to bring them to repentance, and you spare them, for you are the Lord our God. In place of the antiphon, the following hymns/songs could be used: Attende Domine O Sun of Justice There s A Wideness in God s Mercy O God, Our Help in Ages Past Collect A. Graciously hear the prayers of those who call upon you, we ask, O Lord, and forgive the sins of those who confess you, granting us in your kindness both pardon and peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. B. Almighty and most gentle God, who brought forth from the rock a fountain of living water for your thirsty people, bring forth we pray, from the hardness of our heart, tears of sorrow, that we may lament our sins and merit forgiveness from your mercy. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. The Liturgy of the Word The readings are taken in whole from the liturgy of the day. The responsorial psalm is Psalm 1 (same as the 6 th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C). 2
Universal Prayer Presider: God continues to welcome sinners with unlimited mercy. With confident faith let us call upon him to refresh and renew us. For the Church and its leaders, especially our Holy Father, the bishops and all entrusted with the care of the Lord s flock, that they may truly fill the role of shepherd and protect all in their flock, we pray to the Lord For civic leaders entrusted with upholding the common good and justice for all that they may act in ways that show their commitment to the protection of all, we pray to the Lord For parents, mentors, teachers, coaches and all who work with children and young people, that they may look after them with the watchful eye of the shepherd, we pray to the Lord For families who are the first to show God s love, that they may have the necessary support to provide safe and nurturing environments for all members, we pray to the Lord For those who have suffered abuse, that they may experience God s profound love for them and God s healing powers, we pray to the Lord For those who provide help for the abused: counselors, therapists, and advocates that they may act with wisdom and compassion in their healing ministry, we pray to the Lord For those affected by abuse in anyway, that they may have the courage to tell their story, to reach for healing, we pray to the Lord Presider: Loving God, nourish our faith with the Word of Life, sustain us by your mercy, and renew us by your Spirit. Through Christ our Lord. The Liturgy of the Eucharist Offertory The following hymns/songs could be used: The Servant Song Where Charity & Love Prevail I Heard the Voice of Jesus 3
Prayer Over the Offerings A. We offer you, O Lord, the sacrifice of conciliation and praise, that, being moved to compassion, you may both pardon our offenses and direct our wavering hearts. Through Christ our Lord. B. Look mercifully, O Lord, upon this oblation, which we offer to your majesty for our sins, and grant, we pray, that the sacrifice from which forgiveness springs forth for the human race may bestow on us the grace of the Holy Spirit to shed tears for our offenses. Through Christ our Lord. Preface IV of the Sundays in Ordinary Time Communion Antiphon There will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents. The following hymns/songs could be used: Psalm 34 Ubi Caritas- Taize Christians, Let Us Love One Another O Sacrament Most Holy 4
Prayer After Communion A. Grant us, merciful God, that, receiving in this gift the forgiveness of sins, we may be able by your grace to avoid sinning from now on and to serve you in sincerity of heart. Through Christ our Lord. B. May the reverent reception of your Sacrament, O Lord, lead us to wash away the stains of our sins with sighs and tears, and in your generosity grant that the pardon we seek may have its effect on us. Through Christ our Lord. Recessional The following hymns/songs could be used: Christ is the World s Light Christ be our Light Beautiful Savior Lord of All Hopefulness Love Divine, All Love Excelling 5
