3 Parish Announcements Sunday, March 12, From the Diocese of Sacramento: 2017 Lenton Regulations (continued) II. PRAYER. In order to deepen one s love for Christ, Catholics are urged to read and pray with sacred Scripture; to study the Catechism of the Catholic Church; to participate in devotions offered by the parish; and to pray more fervently -- individually, as families, and in common with others. The faithful are exhorted to pray the rosary, visit the Blessed Sacrament, pray for vocations to the priesthood and the religious life, world peace, and for an ongoing implementation of the pastoral initiatives of the Third Diocesan Synod. 1. Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation: Lent is a privileged time for celebrating this sacrament. Parishes generally make readily available the Sacrament of Penance, including its communal celebration. (In this way, the social and ecclesial aspects of sin and reconciliation, as well as one s personal reconciliation with God may be underscored.) At communal celebrations of reconciliation, however, general absolution is not permitted. People should attend also to reconciliation in every aspect of human life -- personal, familial, societal, and ecclesial. During the Lenten and Easter time, Catholics are reminded that they are obliged to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance at least once a year. 2. Lenten Mass Schedule: Daily Masses during Lent are to be scheduled so as to facilitate the attendance and spiritual growth of the faithful. The faithful are urged to attend Mass on weekdays as often as possible. 3. The Stations of the Cross are to be celebrated publicly in each parish on Fridays during the Lenten season. Parishioners are urged to participate. 4. Day of penance and prayer, Wednesday, March 8, 2017 (second Wednesday of March): According to Diocese Statue no. 123, 3c. A day of penance for negative attitudes and discrimination toward people of differing cultures, ethnicity and race; and prayer for unity in our diversity, for equality, mutual respect and peace among all peoples is to be observed. 5. Wedding Masses may not be celebrated during the Easter Triduum, on Sundays of Lent, Ash Wednesday, or during Holy Week. Marriages may take place at other times during Lent according to the proper liturgical norms and provisions, but it is contrary to the penitential spirit of the season to have elaborate weddings or lavish receptions. 6. Funeral Masses may not be celebrated on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, or Holy Saturday, nor on the Sundays of Lent. When pastoral reasons require that a funeral be celebrated on these days, a Liturgy of the Word, with the final commendation and farewell rite, is held. 7. Mass may not be offered on Holy Saturday, April 15, The Easter Vigil (April 15) is celebrated after nightfall, generally understood to be 30 minutes after sunset, which is 7:45 p.m. this year. The Easter Vigil may begin any time after 8:15 p.m. 9. Easter Duty: All Catholics who have been initiated into the Holy Eucharist are bound to receive Holy Communion worthily at least once during the Easter Season: Easter Sunday, March 27 through Pentecost, May 15. (In the United States, the Easter duty may be fulfilled through Trinity Sunday, May 22) Catholics are encouraged to receive Communion as often as possible, not only during Eastertide, but throughout the liturgical year. However, Anyone conscious of a grave sin must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before coming to Communion. (CCC, no. 1385) (to be continued next week...)

Our culture is waging war against the Church and against God. The culture promotes several bad philosophies. One of them, Relativism, holds that there is no absolute Truth. We each can define our own moral code, yours as good as mine. God is Truth. If there is no absolute Truth, then there is no God. Jesus instituted the Catholic Church to guide us to Him in Truth and in Agape love. Agape Love is self-less love and focuses exclusively on others. We are in this together. Jesus instituted His Church with marks that make it One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic: Jesus only instituted One Church and prayed that we would all be united as in one body. It is Holy not based on the holiness of its members but on its founder, Jesus Christ. It is Catholic because it is for all people, universally. It is Apostolic because Jesus gave his authority to the apostles and successor bishops. Are you ready to rebel against our culture and embrace Catholic teaching? Phil On Monday, February 27 th, the Marian Guild held their monthly meeting with beads, masks, bright colors, and food that reflected the Mardi Gras spirit. Fr. Phil gave a thoughtprovoking presentation on the Legends, Myths, and Truths of the Lenten Season, while the ladies enjoyed cheese and chocolate fondue, New Orleans-style appetizers and desserts, and champagne. The Guild also kicked off their Lenten almsgiving project by collecting donations for Shriners hospital. The contributions will be used to purchase Easter gifts for children receiving care at the facility. Membership in the Guild is open to all women of St. Joseph Marello Parish. Our ministry is devoted to promoting the spiritual enrichment of our members, fundraising for the Parish and Guild-specific activities, and fostering fellowship through social outreach. 7 General Announcements Sunday, March 12, Days for Life From March 1 to April 9, our community will take part in 40 Days for Life-- a groundbreaking, coordinated international mobilization. Our local 40 Days for Life prayer vigil will offer immediate and practical help to women facing an unexpected pregnancy and share the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. This continuous peaceful, prayerful vigil will be held at Women s Health Specialists, 1442 Ethan Way in Sacramento from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Read more at sacramento. For information or to carpool with St. Joseph Marello parishioners, call Carol at Altar Server Olympics On April 29, 2017, the Altar Server Olympics is coming to Trinity Pines Catholic Center in Colfax from 1:00 6:00pm, teams hailing from all parts of the Diocese will be competing for the title of Altar Server Olympic champions. The day is a great opportunity to participate in a fun and friendly competition. NEW this year the Altar Server Olympics is open to Servers in 4th - 12th grade with two separate age divisions.
